  • 00:00:05.290 --> 00:00:11.280
  • 00:00:11.290 --> 00:00:17.280
  • 00:00:17.290 --> 00:00:22.290
  • Pastor Allen Jackson: You remember the line--the
  • 00:00:25.010 --> 00:00:26.110
  • celebrated line from Luke's Gospel.
  • 00:00:26.120 --> 00:00:28.090
  • It's Luke 2. You have it.
  • 00:00:28.100 --> 00:00:29.230
  • "Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with
  • 00:00:29.240 --> 00:00:32.080
  • the angel, praising God and saying, 'Glory to God in the
  • 00:00:32.090 --> 00:00:35.190
  • highest, on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.'"
  • 00:00:35.200 --> 00:00:40.200
  • You matter to God, that's what Christmas means.
  • 00:00:40.210 --> 00:00:43.020
  • You matter to God. It's his generosity to you.
  • 00:00:43.030 --> 00:00:48.290
  • I believe the big picture lesson that we
  • 00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:51.090
  • take away from the Christmas story is that we should rejoice
  • 00:00:51.100 --> 00:00:55.220
  • when God's purposes are being worked out.
  • 00:00:55.230 --> 00:00:59.150
  • We recognize God's purposes are emerging personally,
  • 00:00:59.160 --> 00:01:03.160
  • in a broader way whatever that looks like, our appropriate
  • 00:01:03.170 --> 00:01:06.050
  • response is to rejoice.
  • 00:01:06.060 --> 00:01:08.250
  • We celebrate the Christmas story, but for Jesus I don't
  • 00:01:08.260 --> 00:01:12.010
  • know how exciting that was.
  • 00:01:12.020 --> 00:01:14.150
  • He was subject to all the limits and the frailty of a human body.
  • 00:01:14.160 --> 00:01:18.230
  • His journey through time was not always blessed.
  • 00:01:18.240 --> 00:01:22.060
  • Lots of rejection.
  • 00:01:22.070 --> 00:01:24.050
  • Lots of pushback.
  • 00:01:24.060 --> 00:01:26.260
  • Ultimately, he's executed.
  • 00:01:26.270 --> 00:01:31.240
  • We should rejoice when the purposes of God are being
  • 00:01:31.250 --> 00:01:35.020
  • worked out.
  • 00:01:35.030 --> 00:01:36.120
  • I want you to keep thinkin' about that with me for a minute.
  • 00:01:36.130 --> 00:01:38.070
  • It's not always fun or easy or convenient or comfortable.
  • 00:01:38.080 --> 00:01:41.160
  • It's reorienting, sometimes there's a laying aside
  • 00:01:41.170 --> 00:01:44.000
  • and turning loose and putting down.
  • 00:01:44.010 --> 00:01:46.180
  • So that you can pick up something new from the Lord
  • 00:01:46.190 --> 00:01:48.170
  • and then in learning something new you feel awkward and ill
  • 00:01:48.180 --> 00:01:51.170
  • at ease and and a little bit exposed and more vulnerable.
  • 00:01:51.180 --> 00:01:56.060
  • And the invitation is to rejoice because the purposes of God are
  • 00:01:56.070 --> 00:01:59.160
  • breaking forth.
  • 00:01:59.170 --> 00:02:02.140
  • Well, couldn't God's purposes break forth?
  • 00:02:02.150 --> 00:02:03.270
  • You see, the truth is I don't know how much we care
  • 00:02:03.280 --> 00:02:05.160
  • about God's purpose.
  • 00:02:05.170 --> 00:02:07.040
  • What I really want God to care about my purpose.
  • 00:02:07.050 --> 00:02:10.230
  • I keep showing God my to do list and said could you not focused
  • 00:02:10.240 --> 00:02:13.210
  • just for a minute right here?
  • 00:02:13.220 --> 00:02:18.020
  • And I think God keeps inviting me into his purposes.
  • 00:02:18.030 --> 00:02:21.190
  • Look in Luke chapter 6 Jesus is speaking, he said, "Blessed are
  • 00:02:21.200 --> 00:02:25.260
  • you when men hate you."
  • 00:02:25.270 --> 00:02:27.290
  • Now if Jesus hadn't said it I wouldn't believe it.
  • 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:31.060
  • But I trust him.
  • 00:02:31.070 --> 00:02:32.160
  • Blessed are you when men hate you.
  • 00:02:32.170 --> 00:02:33.270
  • I'm really thinking is more blessed when people like
  • 00:02:33.280 --> 00:02:37.060
  • me, right?
  • 00:02:37.070 --> 00:02:38.160
  • I mean, if you're gonna throw rocks or money, I choose money.
  • 00:02:38.170 --> 00:02:41.280
  • Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you
  • 00:02:41.290 --> 00:02:46.250
  • and insult you and reject your name as evil because of the
  • 00:02:46.260 --> 00:02:52.160
  • Son of Man.
  • 00:02:52.170 --> 00:02:54.150
  • Jesus said there's a blessing in that.
  • 00:02:54.160 --> 00:02:56.120
  • I don't believe he's just speaking rhetorically.
  • 00:02:56.130 --> 00:02:59.070
  • He says rejoice in that, "they leap for joy because great is
  • 00:02:59.080 --> 00:03:03.210
  • your reward in heaven."
  • 00:03:03.220 --> 00:03:07.100
  • So he's inviting us towards and imagination that
  • 00:03:07.110 --> 00:03:10.000
  • the reward of the our existence is not going to be most fully
  • 00:03:10.010 --> 00:03:13.290
  • understood in time.
  • 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:17.050
  • Now does God make a difference in our lives in time?
  • 00:03:17.060 --> 00:03:19.120
  • Absolutely he does, but the real pay off where your faith is
  • 00:03:19.130 --> 00:03:22.290
  • in eternity.
  • 00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:25.000
  • And if for a moment, you suffer or endure or rejected or mocked
  • 00:03:25.010 --> 00:03:29.260
  • or you lay down, Jesus said rejoice, even if it grows
  • 00:03:29.270 --> 00:03:34.070
  • to hatred 'cause God's purposes are breaking forth on
  • 00:03:34.080 --> 00:03:42.040
  • your behalf.
  • 00:03:42.050 --> 00:03:45.050
  • Well, this couldn't be God.
  • 00:03:45.060 --> 00:03:48.100
  • Couldn't be God as you're falsely accused.
  • 00:03:48.110 --> 00:03:51.090
  • Couldn't be God if you're betrayed.
  • 00:03:51.100 --> 00:03:52.250
  • Couldn't be God if you're arrested.
  • 00:03:52.260 --> 00:03:55.070
  • Couldn't be God of you're beaten beyond recognition.
  • 00:03:55.080 --> 00:03:57.240
  • Couldn't be God if you're executed.
  • 00:03:57.250 --> 00:04:00.210
  • But he was.
  • 00:04:00.220 --> 00:04:02.220
  • So Jesus isn't speaking to us from some theoretical idea, he's
  • 00:04:02.230 --> 00:04:06.270
  • speaking to us from an assignment that he is
  • 00:04:06.280 --> 00:04:08.280
  • fully embraced for himself.
  • 00:04:08.290 --> 00:04:12.230
  • I want to add to that a passage from 1 Peter.
  • 00:04:12.240 --> 00:04:16.020
  • Peter is one of my heroes in the Bible.
  • 00:04:16.030 --> 00:04:18.230
  • He's one of those very unique characters, we get to follow
  • 00:04:18.240 --> 00:04:21.270
  • Peter's journey his Jesus journey from the time of--
  • 00:04:21.280 --> 00:04:25.270
  • the early time of his life until very near the end of his life.
  • 00:04:25.280 --> 00:04:30.170
  • We first meet Peter in the gospels when Jesus is
  • 00:04:30.180 --> 00:04:33.260
  • just beginning his public ministry and he's recruiting
  • 00:04:33.270 --> 00:04:36.230
  • a team of people who are gonna be his inner circle.
  • 00:04:36.240 --> 00:04:40.080
  • And he selects Peter to be a part of that group, but when
  • 00:04:40.090 --> 00:04:42.290
  • he recruits Peter, Peter is a fisherman.
  • 00:04:43.000 --> 00:04:46.000
  • He lives on the northern end of the Sea of Galilee and he's
  • 00:04:46.010 --> 00:04:48.200
  • made his living.
  • 00:04:48.210 --> 00:04:50.000
  • He's established a business fishing; there's seven warm
  • 00:04:50.010 --> 00:04:51.230
  • springs on the northern--it is the best fishing in the lake
  • 00:04:51.240 --> 00:04:54.220
  • and that's where Peter is set up shop.
  • 00:04:54.230 --> 00:04:57.180
  • And he meets Jesus one day, and Jesus says, "Follow me,"
  • 00:04:57.190 --> 00:04:59.290
  • and Peter really inexplicably does.
  • 00:05:00.020 --> 00:05:04.140
  • And then the Epistles at the end of the New Testament, 1 and 2
  • 00:05:04.150 --> 00:05:07.140
  • Peter are written very near the end of his life.
  • 00:05:07.150 --> 00:05:10.260
  • He's expecting his execution.
  • 00:05:10.270 --> 00:05:13.170
  • So we kinda puts down his thoughts.
  • 00:05:13.180 --> 00:05:16.120
  • So I have this image in my mind of Peter when Jesus recruits
  • 00:05:16.130 --> 00:05:18.280
  • him, most likely a teenager.
  • 00:05:18.290 --> 00:05:23.030
  • He's grown up on the lake fishing, he's built a business
  • 00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:25.150
  • fishing so he's his shoulders are thick with the muscle
  • 00:05:25.160 --> 00:05:29.170
  • from pulling the nets out of the water.
  • 00:05:29.180 --> 00:05:32.180
  • His forearms or braided with the muscle from that manual
  • 00:05:32.190 --> 00:05:35.040
  • labor day after day.
  • 00:05:35.050 --> 00:05:36.140
  • His hair's a little tousled and his face his brown
  • 00:05:36.150 --> 00:05:40.060
  • by the sun and the wind, and if you get close to him he smells
  • 00:05:40.070 --> 00:05:42.180
  • like somebody that works outdoors all the time.
  • 00:05:42.190 --> 00:05:45.210
  • Peter's brash.
  • 00:05:45.220 --> 00:05:48.070
  • Maybe he's brash because of his physical strength, but I really
  • 00:05:48.080 --> 00:05:50.170
  • think he's brash 'cause he's got a fire on the inside.
  • 00:05:50.180 --> 00:05:53.030
  • He shoots his mouth off a lot of times before his brain quite
  • 00:05:53.040 --> 00:05:55.200
  • catches on.
  • 00:05:55.210 --> 00:05:59.050
  • But he's a man of some real courage, he's a man that other
  • 00:05:59.060 --> 00:06:01.230
  • men, other people will follow.
  • 00:06:01.240 --> 00:06:05.010
  • When he's in the boat with his friends and Jesus comes walking
  • 00:06:05.020 --> 00:06:07.100
  • across the lake Peter says everybody's terrified.
  • 00:06:07.110 --> 00:06:10.120
  • I'm sure he wants to and I've never seen that they think it's
  • 00:06:10.130 --> 00:06:12.120
  • a ghost.
  • 00:06:12.130 --> 00:06:13.220
  • And he said, "Lord, if that's really you I want to walk,"
  • 00:06:13.230 --> 00:06:15.270
  • and he gets out of the boat.
  • 00:06:15.280 --> 00:06:20.040
  • Dude, and he walks away.
  • 00:06:20.050 --> 00:06:23.160
  • Now I know he gets a little damp, but he walks away.
  • 00:06:23.170 --> 00:06:29.140
  • And three years later, when Jesus is saying you know you're
  • 00:06:29.150 --> 00:06:31.160
  • gonna--nobody's gonna stand with me.
  • 00:06:31.170 --> 00:06:33.020
  • Peter looks at him and said, "Lord, you know I don't know
  • 00:06:33.030 --> 00:06:34.190
  • about the rest of these, I'm with you.
  • 00:06:34.200 --> 00:06:36.060
  • I've questioned them but I will never abandon you."
  • 00:06:36.070 --> 00:06:41.240
  • And when they come for Jesus, Peter is the one that pulls
  • 00:06:41.250 --> 00:06:43.200
  • a sword and separate some guy's ear from his head.
  • 00:06:43.210 --> 00:06:48.010
  • Jesus has to dialing back a little bit so he didn't start
  • 00:06:48.020 --> 00:06:50.230
  • out terrified, he started out willing to put himself
  • 00:06:50.240 --> 00:06:53.040
  • on the line, but before the night was done
  • 00:06:53.050 --> 00:06:55.190
  • he's denied the Lord and that's what we often remember most
  • 00:06:55.200 --> 00:06:58.030
  • about Pete.
  • 00:06:58.040 --> 00:07:03.040
  • They all abandoned Jesus, he wasn't the only one.
  • 00:07:03.050 --> 00:07:06.200
  • He was just the one that called everybody else out before
  • 00:07:06.210 --> 00:07:08.240
  • he did it.
  • 00:07:08.250 --> 00:07:10.230
  • So Jesus personally reinstates Peter and says, "Peter, you're
  • 00:07:10.240 --> 00:07:13.210
  • gonna have to feed my sheep.
  • 00:07:13.220 --> 00:07:16.150
  • I'm not gonna be here, you'll have to feed my sheep."
  • 00:07:16.160 --> 00:07:18.260
  • And he did.
  • 00:07:18.270 --> 00:07:20.110
  • The force of Peter's character, the scholars say--the secular
  • 00:07:20.120 --> 00:07:23.100
  • scholars say it was the force of Peter's character that was
  • 00:07:23.110 --> 00:07:26.090
  • a stabilizing thing for the church and those early years.
  • 00:07:26.100 --> 00:07:29.190
  • It's Peter that the Spirit of God sent to Cesarea.
  • 00:07:29.200 --> 00:07:33.230
  • When it was time for the non-Jewish world to get
  • 00:07:33.240 --> 00:07:35.220
  • in on the Jesus story.
  • 00:07:35.230 --> 00:07:40.280
  • But when we read 1 and 2 Peter, that's not the same Peter we're
  • 00:07:40.290 --> 00:07:43.280
  • talking to.
  • 00:07:43.290 --> 00:07:45.210
  • He's not a brash teenager.
  • 00:07:45.220 --> 00:07:48.010
  • Trusting his physical strength.
  • 00:07:48.020 --> 00:07:50.240
  • In fact by the time we read 1 and 2 Peter, I think his hair's
  • 00:07:50.250 --> 00:07:53.150
  • streaked with a lot of gray.
  • 00:07:53.160 --> 00:07:56.240
  • And you can see that he was one time a powerful, physical person
  • 00:07:56.250 --> 00:08:00.290
  • but that's strength is diminished.
  • 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:06.040
  • The fire hasn't diminished.
  • 00:08:06.050 --> 00:08:07.140
  • You can see it if you look in his eyes.
  • 00:08:07.150 --> 00:08:10.050
  • And now he's a man who spent his entire life with this
  • 00:08:10.060 --> 00:08:13.260
  • Jesus story.
  • 00:08:13.270 --> 00:08:16.120
  • And if you'll sit with you a minute, he'll tell you
  • 00:08:16.130 --> 00:08:17.220
  • the stories.
  • 00:08:17.230 --> 00:08:20.070
  • He'll tell you about that early morning when he was
  • 00:08:20.080 --> 00:08:24.080
  • with the crew.
  • 00:08:24.090 --> 00:08:26.200
  • They were hiding because the the sting of Jesus's
  • 00:08:26.210 --> 00:08:30.190
  • crucifixion was still fresh and they were afraid.
  • 00:08:30.200 --> 00:08:33.230
  • And the women showed up and said the tomb was empty.
  • 00:08:33.240 --> 00:08:37.170
  • And Peter sprinted for the tomb.
  • 00:08:37.180 --> 00:08:41.260
  • He stepped inside, it was empty.
  • 00:08:41.270 --> 00:08:43.290
  • He'll tell you about that afternoon when Jesus stepped
  • 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:45.250
  • in the room.
  • 00:08:45.260 --> 00:08:48.210
  • If you listen, he might tell you about the day of Pentecost
  • 00:08:48.220 --> 00:08:50.290
  • and how afraid he was a public speaking.
  • 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:55.130
  • He might tell you about what it felt like when he walked
  • 00:08:55.140 --> 00:08:57.070
  • through the streets of Jerusalem and when his shadow fell
  • 00:08:57.080 --> 00:08:59.270
  • on people, they got well.
  • 00:08:59.280 --> 00:09:05.230
  • Maybe he'll tell you about the trip he made Cesarea
  • 00:09:05.240 --> 00:09:10.020
  • and how anxious he was, how uncomfortable he was walking
  • 00:09:10.030 --> 00:09:12.180
  • into a non-Jewish man's home.
  • 00:09:12.190 --> 00:09:16.070
  • And how shocked he was when the Holy Spirit fell.
  • 00:09:16.080 --> 00:09:20.180
  • But before he steps out of time, he gave you and me some
  • 00:09:20.190 --> 00:09:24.050
  • instructions.
  • 00:09:24.060 --> 00:09:25.180
  • That's what's in 1 and 2 Peter.
  • 00:09:25.190 --> 00:09:28.280
  • And Peter writes with the simplicity you would
  • 00:09:28.290 --> 00:09:30.210
  • expect from a fisherman.
  • 00:09:30.220 --> 00:09:33.140
  • Paul's a scholar, and when you read Paul's writing you
  • 00:09:33.150 --> 00:09:37.050
  • think he is.
  • 00:09:37.060 --> 00:09:38.160
  • Paul has some single sentences that are a page long.
  • 00:09:38.170 --> 00:09:44.150
  • Even Peter said you know, Paul's hard to understand sometimes.
  • 00:09:44.160 --> 00:09:50.060
  • But Peter writes with the plain, spoken speech you would
  • 00:09:50.070 --> 00:09:53.130
  • expect him to.
  • 00:09:53.140 --> 00:09:55.130
  • I want you to listen with me to what he said.
  • 00:09:55.140 --> 00:09:56.280
  • It's in your notes.
  • 00:09:56.290 --> 00:09:58.290
  • "Humble yourself, therefore under God's mighty hand that he
  • 00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:02.230
  • may lift you up in due time.
  • 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:05.020
  • Cast all your anxiety on him.
  • 00:10:05.030 --> 00:10:07.230
  • Because he cares for you.
  • 00:10:07.240 --> 00:10:09.180
  • Be self-controlled and alert.
  • 00:10:09.190 --> 00:10:12.070
  • Your enemy, the devil prowls around like a roaring lion
  • 00:10:12.080 --> 00:10:15.070
  • looking for someone to devour, resist him standing firm
  • 00:10:15.080 --> 00:10:19.220
  • in the faith because you know that your brothers
  • 00:10:19.230 --> 00:10:22.150
  • throughout the world are undergoing the same kind
  • 00:10:22.160 --> 00:10:24.150
  • of sufferings.
  • 00:10:24.160 --> 00:10:29.030
  • And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory
  • 00:10:29.040 --> 00:10:32.010
  • in Christ--after you've suffered a little while--will
  • 00:10:32.020 --> 00:10:34.230
  • himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast
  • 00:10:34.240 --> 00:10:39.130
  • to him be the power forever and ever, amen."
  • 00:10:39.140 --> 00:10:44.120
  • He just gave you and me a treasure chest of invitations
  • 00:10:44.130 --> 00:10:50.080
  • and what it means to be a Christ follower.
  • 00:10:50.090 --> 00:10:54.090
  • If we want to participate in the purposes of God, Peter
  • 00:10:54.100 --> 00:10:56.240
  • just gave us a wealth from his life experience.
  • 00:10:56.250 --> 00:10:59.170
  • He started recruited by the man himself.
  • 00:10:59.180 --> 00:11:03.200
  • He said humble yourselves under God's mighty hand.
  • 00:11:03.210 --> 00:11:07.110
  • Humble yourselves.
  • 00:11:07.120 --> 00:11:10.250
  • It's the beginning point, it was the beginning point for Jesus.
  • 00:11:10.260 --> 00:11:13.060
  • It said he had to humble himself and become obedient.
  • 00:11:13.070 --> 00:11:17.160
  • And Peter is saying the same thing: humble yourself, there is
  • 00:11:17.170 --> 00:11:19.270
  • a God and it's not you.
  • 00:11:19.280 --> 00:11:21.080
  • Humility doesn't say I have no value.
  • 00:11:21.090 --> 00:11:23.120
  • That's not humility at all.
  • 00:11:23.130 --> 00:11:25.230
  • Humility isn't saying I'm some weak worm of the dust and
  • 00:11:25.240 --> 00:11:28.050
  • I'm insignificant.
  • 00:11:28.060 --> 00:11:29.150
  • That's not it, God said you're fearfully and wonderfully made.
  • 00:11:29.160 --> 00:11:32.070
  • He sent his Son to rescue you.
  • 00:11:32.080 --> 00:11:35.250
  • Humility is a right understanding of who you are.
  • 00:11:35.260 --> 00:11:40.220
  • The strength which God has given you the weaknesses which you
  • 00:11:40.230 --> 00:11:43.100
  • have, the gifts you've been entrusted with, the gifts you
  • 00:11:43.110 --> 00:11:45.170
  • don't have.
  • 00:11:45.180 --> 00:11:47.110
  • The limits that come with your humanity and mine.
  • 00:11:47.120 --> 00:11:51.090
  • The difference between ourselves and God.
  • 00:11:51.100 --> 00:11:53.140
  • "Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God."
  • 00:11:53.150 --> 00:11:59.260
  • We are a race of rebels and the great temptation in our
  • 00:11:59.270 --> 00:12:05.040
  • lives is pride.
  • 00:12:05.050 --> 00:12:07.200
  • But I'm God.
  • 00:12:07.210 --> 00:12:09.200
  • But I'll choose my path.
  • 00:12:09.210 --> 00:12:11.210
  • Allen: Hey, I wanted to take a minute just to say thank you.
  • 00:12:13.100 --> 00:12:15.260
  • Thank you for your partnership for your generosity for standing
  • 00:12:15.270 --> 00:12:18.210
  • with us this year and lifting up the name of Jesus and our
  • 00:12:18.220 --> 00:12:21.180
  • nation and around the earth.
  • 00:12:21.190 --> 00:12:23.000
  • You've made a tremendous difference.
  • 00:12:23.010 --> 00:12:25.010
  • This year's coming quickly to a close and I want to ask you
  • 00:12:25.020 --> 00:12:27.220
  • to consider making a year end investment in our ministry.
  • 00:12:27.230 --> 00:12:30.170
  • Together, we're making a difference for the kingdom
  • 00:12:30.180 --> 00:12:32.100
  • of God and we got big plans for 2020.
  • 00:12:32.110 --> 00:12:35.110
  • Friend of the ministry has invested a $250.000

  • and a matching grant, so whatever you are able to give
  • 00:12:38.210 --> 00:12:41.020
  • in these next few weeks will be doubled because of that
  • 00:12:41.030 --> 00:12:43.060
  • generosity.
  • 00:12:43.070 --> 00:12:44.170
  • We have a unique window of opportunity in so many ways.
  • 00:12:44.180 --> 00:12:47.240
  • God is moving in the earth and he's positioned us to make
  • 00:12:47.250 --> 00:12:50.240
  • a difference.
  • 00:12:50.250 --> 00:12:52.050
  • Thank you for joining with me.
  • 00:12:52.060 --> 00:12:53.150
  • Your generosity, your sacrifices, I believe
  • 00:12:53.160 --> 00:12:55.140
  • God will respond.
  • 00:12:55.150 --> 00:12:56.250

  • Ministries.
  • 00:13:28.130 --> 00:13:29.230
  • Together, we are making a difference.
  • 00:13:29.240 --> 00:13:31.240
  • Allen: Peter said we're gonna suffer a little.
  • 00:13:34.100 --> 00:13:39.110
  • You know if it's my suffering, it's not little.
  • 00:13:39.120 --> 00:13:42.220
  • In fact, I have come to understand something that
  • 00:13:42.230 --> 00:13:44.250
  • the hardest part in this equation is the timing
  • 00:13:44.260 --> 00:13:46.240
  • component.
  • 00:13:46.250 --> 00:13:49.030
  • And the length for which you're asked to suffer is directly
  • 00:13:49.040 --> 00:13:52.030
  • proportional to the degree that you're personally involved.
  • 00:13:52.040 --> 00:13:56.000
  • If you're not the one that's waiting it doesn't seem
  • 00:13:56.010 --> 00:13:58.020
  • like a long wait.
  • 00:13:58.030 --> 00:14:01.110
  • Think of it in terms of little people.
  • 00:14:01.120 --> 00:14:02.230
  • If they want ice cream and you say, "Not until you eat your
  • 00:14:02.240 --> 00:14:05.120
  • vegetables."
  • 00:14:05.130 --> 00:14:07.150
  • I don't imagine that I just gave an edict that has years
  • 00:14:07.160 --> 00:14:10.070
  • attached to it.
  • 00:14:10.080 --> 00:14:12.010
  • But clearly from the emotions that are expressed in their
  • 00:14:12.020 --> 00:14:14.200
  • response, they think the ice cream just got moved several
  • 00:14:14.210 --> 00:14:18.030
  • years into the future and the barrier is broccoli
  • 00:14:18.040 --> 00:14:21.250
  • and it's insurmountable.
  • 00:14:21.260 --> 00:14:25.040
  • If they were clever enough just to gobble this stuff
  • 00:14:25.050 --> 00:14:27.040
  • down and they could have ice cream almost momentarily but it
  • 00:14:27.050 --> 00:14:30.260
  • requires quite an extended period of time of debate,
  • 00:14:30.270 --> 00:14:35.100
  • of refusal to accept the terms of the negotiation, and then
  • 00:14:35.110 --> 00:14:40.100
  • when they have to actually finally taste it they're going
  • 00:14:40.110 --> 00:14:43.000
  • to do it in the smallest possible portions and chew it as
  • 00:14:43.010 --> 00:14:46.110
  • slowly as humanly possible, right?
  • 00:14:46.120 --> 00:14:51.200
  • And they're pretty confident.
  • 00:14:51.210 --> 00:14:53.010
  • It was about three years ago they were promised ice cream.
  • 00:14:53.020 --> 00:14:57.210
  • And I remember when I was a child I thought Christmas
  • 00:14:57.220 --> 00:14:59.080
  • happened every decade and now it happens every six weeks.
  • 00:14:59.090 --> 00:15:05.170
  • So when Peter said, "You're going to suffer for a little
  • 00:15:05.180 --> 00:15:07.220
  • while," it doesn't feel like a little while if I'm
  • 00:15:07.230 --> 00:15:10.280
  • the walking--the one walking through that shadowed valley.
  • 00:15:10.290 --> 00:15:14.160
  • But he makes a promise, he tells us truthfully, candidly you're
  • 00:15:14.170 --> 00:15:17.180
  • gonna suffer some.
  • 00:15:17.190 --> 00:15:20.210
  • Not a popular message in contemporary American
  • 00:15:20.220 --> 00:15:22.230
  • Christian, but it's the truth of the Word of God.
  • 00:15:22.240 --> 00:15:27.030
  • After you've suffered a little while God himself, Peter said
  • 00:15:27.040 --> 00:15:30.030
  • will restore you.
  • 00:15:30.040 --> 00:15:31.130
  • I love this, that God has personally aware of what you're
  • 00:15:31.140 --> 00:15:33.210
  • enduring and when the season's over, he will personally
  • 00:15:33.220 --> 00:15:37.050
  • restore you.
  • 00:15:37.060 --> 00:15:38.250
  • He's not aloof, removed, disinterested, calloused--he
  • 00:15:38.260 --> 00:15:42.110
  • will restore you and you'll be strong, firm, and steadfast.
  • 00:15:42.120 --> 00:15:46.150
  • You'll be better than you were when the season began.
  • 00:15:46.160 --> 00:15:51.020
  • What amazing advice from our friend.
  • 00:15:51.030 --> 00:15:55.160
  • Now the outcome of Jesus's obedience was he secured a very
  • 00:15:55.170 --> 00:15:59.250
  • unique position.
  • 00:15:59.260 --> 00:16:01.190
  • You know the verse.
  • 00:16:01.200 --> 00:16:02.290
  • It says God gave him a name that's above every name,
  • 00:16:03.000 --> 00:16:04.280
  • the name of Jesus every knee would bow.
  • 00:16:04.290 --> 00:16:08.070
  • God will respond to your willingness to follow him.
  • 00:16:08.080 --> 00:16:11.090
  • Jesus understood himself to have a mission.
  • 00:16:11.100 --> 00:16:14.020
  • He wasn't here arbitrarily and neither should you and I be.
  • 00:16:14.030 --> 00:16:18.020
  • In Luke 19, Jesus was in Jericho.
  • 00:16:18.030 --> 00:16:20.240
  • He's had--he spent the afternoon in the home
  • 00:16:20.250 --> 00:16:22.250
  • of the most wicked man in the city.
  • 00:16:22.260 --> 00:16:24.130
  • The most notoriously wicked man in the city.
  • 00:16:24.140 --> 00:16:28.030
  • Who do you imagine to be the most wicked person you know?
  • 00:16:28.040 --> 00:16:32.200
  • I don't mean maybe personally know, but the most wicked person
  • 00:16:32.210 --> 00:16:35.010
  • you're aware of.
  • 00:16:35.020 --> 00:16:36.240
  • That's who Jesus went to spend the afternoon with.
  • 00:16:36.250 --> 00:16:39.260
  • And the more righteous folks are a little torqued, I suspect you
  • 00:16:39.270 --> 00:16:42.040
  • and I would be.
  • 00:16:42.050 --> 00:16:43.250
  • Well, I thought Jesus had more discernment than that.
  • 00:16:43.260 --> 00:16:47.150
  • That person is wicked, immoral, ungodly, and at the end
  • 00:16:47.160 --> 00:16:51.030
  • of the afternoon Jesus makes a public announcement.
  • 00:16:51.040 --> 00:16:53.010
  • He said, "Today, salvation has come to this house.
  • 00:16:53.020 --> 00:16:55.180
  • This man, too, is a son of Abraham."
  • 00:16:55.190 --> 00:16:57.110
  • It's a rescue mission.
  • 00:16:57.120 --> 00:16:58.210
  • Isn't that where we started?
  • 00:16:58.220 --> 00:17:00.240
  • Jesus said it's not the healthy who need a physician,
  • 00:17:00.250 --> 00:17:02.260
  • but the sick.
  • 00:17:02.270 --> 00:17:04.130
  • "This man, too" Jesus said.
  • 00:17:04.140 --> 00:17:06.130
  • And then he gives us his life mission.
  • 00:17:06.140 --> 00:17:07.280
  • Jesus understood why he was here: "For the Son of Man came
  • 00:17:07.290 --> 00:17:11.030
  • to seek and to save what was lost."
  • 00:17:11.040 --> 00:17:14.270
  • Jesus came to the earth, the whole Bethlehem initiative
  • 00:17:14.280 --> 00:17:18.020
  • was a launch point to seek and to save those that were
  • 00:17:18.030 --> 00:17:21.050
  • separate from the kingdom of God.
  • 00:17:21.060 --> 00:17:25.290
  • And he had a plan for the perpetuation of his mission.
  • 00:17:26.000 --> 00:17:29.120
  • Jesus was going back to heaven within 40 days
  • 00:17:29.130 --> 00:17:30.280
  • of the Resurrection.
  • 00:17:30.290 --> 00:17:32.080
  • He was outta here, but he had a plan.
  • 00:17:32.090 --> 00:17:34.220
  • In Matthew 16, he said, "I will build my church and hell itself
  • 00:17:34.230 --> 00:17:38.280
  • won't stand against it."
  • 00:17:38.290 --> 00:17:40.080
  • It's future tense.
  • 00:17:40.090 --> 00:17:41.180
  • He didn't say, "I have built my church, I have completed my
  • 00:17:41.190 --> 00:17:43.210
  • church, I have established--" I will build it.
  • 00:17:43.220 --> 00:17:46.010
  • Jesus is still building his church in the earth.
  • 00:17:46.020 --> 00:17:49.290
  • In Matthew 28, he gives us another component it's
  • 00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:53.000
  • post-resurrection.
  • 00:17:53.010 --> 00:17:54.100
  • He appears to his closest friends and he said, "All
  • 00:17:54.110 --> 00:17:56.000
  • authority in heaven and earth has been given to me.
  • 00:17:56.010 --> 00:17:58.040
  • Now you go."
  • 00:17:58.050 --> 00:18:00.080
  • That's not the way I would have written the narrative.
  • 00:18:00.090 --> 00:18:03.280
  • Aren't you glad I wasn't in charge of the Jesus story?
  • 00:18:03.290 --> 00:18:07.020
  • See, I'd kept him here for three or four more years.
  • 00:18:07.030 --> 00:18:08.220
  • I'm like, dude, you can be really valuable on
  • 00:18:08.230 --> 00:18:10.060
  • the banquet circuit.
  • 00:18:10.070 --> 00:18:13.110
  • Look at the story he could've told.
  • 00:18:13.120 --> 00:18:14.240
  • We could've filled the halls.
  • 00:18:14.250 --> 00:18:16.050
  • Think of how much chicken he would've had eaten.
  • 00:18:16.060 --> 00:18:19.180
  • I mean, he's got some stuff-- imagine the look when he walked
  • 00:18:19.190 --> 00:18:22.090
  • back into Pilate's office.
  • 00:18:22.100 --> 00:18:26.160
  • You got the video cameras running.
  • 00:18:26.170 --> 00:18:29.260
  • When he gets the centurion that nailed him to the cross and have
  • 00:18:29.270 --> 00:18:32.110
  • a little one one on one conversation after that
  • 00:18:32.120 --> 00:18:35.060
  • resurrection.
  • 00:18:35.070 --> 00:18:36.160
  • Give a little focus, don't you think?
  • 00:18:36.170 --> 00:18:38.060
  • I'm thinkin' there was some useful things Jesus could have
  • 00:18:38.070 --> 00:18:40.190
  • done but that wasn't God's plan.
  • 00:18:40.200 --> 00:18:42.140
  • Jesus said, "All authority on heaven and earth has been
  • 00:18:42.150 --> 00:18:44.030
  • given to me.
  • 00:18:44.040 --> 00:18:45.130
  • Now you go." That's us.
  • 00:18:45.140 --> 00:18:48.140
  • Jesus could've told his story, but Jesus it accomplished his.
  • 00:18:48.150 --> 00:18:51.160
  • His reward was certain.
  • 00:18:51.170 --> 00:18:53.070
  • God wants you and me to tell our story of how we have been set
  • 00:18:53.080 --> 00:18:56.220
  • free so that we can lay up treasure in heaven.
  • 00:18:56.230 --> 00:19:01.030
  • But what if everybody doesn't respond?
  • 00:19:01.040 --> 00:19:02.170
  • Oh, you mean, what if they hate you and say all sorts of evil
  • 00:19:02.180 --> 00:19:05.220
  • against you?
  • 00:19:05.230 --> 00:19:07.030
  • Jesus gave us some clues on that he said rejoice.
  • 00:19:07.040 --> 00:19:11.190
  • He didn't just say talk to people that you think will
  • 00:19:11.200 --> 00:19:13.140
  • applaud.
  • 00:19:13.150 --> 00:19:15.190
  • It was his plan to perpetuate the story.
  • 00:19:15.200 --> 00:19:18.190
  • God is still breaking forth into our world.
  • 00:19:18.200 --> 00:19:22.060
  • The church.
  • 00:19:22.070 --> 00:19:23.230
  • There's a lot of confusion around what that means.
  • 00:19:23.240 --> 00:19:25.170
  • The church isn't about a building
  • 00:19:25.180 --> 00:19:26.270
  • or a denomination.
  • 00:19:26.280 --> 00:19:28.110
  • It's not an architectural style or a meeting time
  • 00:19:28.120 --> 00:19:30.260
  • on a particular day of the week.
  • 00:19:30.270 --> 00:19:32.240
  • Church is a word that describes the people who've chosen Jesus
  • 00:19:32.250 --> 00:19:37.250
  • as Lord.
  • 00:19:37.260 --> 00:19:39.060
  • There's three components.
  • 00:19:39.070 --> 00:19:40.160
  • You believe Jesus of Nazareth; he's the Messiah, the Son
  • 00:19:40.170 --> 00:19:42.130
  • of God.
  • 00:19:42.140 --> 00:19:44.010
  • There's a personal component: you accept him as Lord of your
  • 00:19:44.020 --> 00:19:46.180
  • life, that's about priority.
  • 00:19:46.190 --> 00:19:48.080
  • He gets first priority.
  • 00:19:48.090 --> 00:19:51.020
  • And then there's an expression of that that you use your
  • 00:19:51.030 --> 00:19:53.150
  • strength for: you serve him as king.
  • 00:19:53.160 --> 00:19:57.070
  • To be a part of the church means you know Jesus of Nazareth as
  • 00:19:57.080 --> 00:20:01.160
  • Christ the Messiah, Lord and King.
  • 00:20:01.170 --> 00:20:07.030
  • I don't really care where you sit on Sunday morning or what
  • 00:20:07.040 --> 00:20:09.240
  • the label is on the building.
  • 00:20:09.250 --> 00:20:11.100
  • If you don't know Jesus Christ as the Messiah, your Lord
  • 00:20:11.110 --> 00:20:15.170
  • and serve him as King, you're not part of the church.
  • 00:20:15.180 --> 00:20:20.110
  • The good news is the church is comprised of people from every
  • 00:20:20.120 --> 00:20:23.060
  • nation, race, language, and tribe.
  • 00:20:23.070 --> 00:20:26.280
  • From every social economic background and every IQ
  • 00:20:26.290 --> 00:20:29.260
  • across the spectrum.
  • 00:20:29.270 --> 00:20:33.080
  • It has to do with our relationship to a person and his
  • 00:20:33.090 --> 00:20:35.240
  • name is Jesus.
  • 00:20:35.250 --> 00:20:38.120
  • The church is a university with a capital C.
  • 00:20:38.130 --> 00:20:40.120
  • That's a universal label.
  • 00:20:40.130 --> 00:20:41.220
  • Local congregations, there's a lot of diversity and that's
  • 00:20:41.230 --> 00:20:44.270
  • okay.
  • 00:20:44.280 --> 00:20:46.070
  • We reflect culture, demographics, decisions
  • 00:20:46.080 --> 00:20:48.100
  • about our specific congregations what we choose to do--we're
  • 00:20:48.110 --> 00:20:51.160
  • collecting toys these weeks.
  • 00:20:51.170 --> 00:20:53.070
  • We're gonna give those to the people who distribute
  • 00:20:53.080 --> 00:20:55.020
  • them to the children around middle Tennessee, not
  • 00:20:55.030 --> 00:20:57.170
  • every church has to do that.
  • 00:20:57.180 --> 00:20:58.270
  • That doesn't make us better or someone else diminished.
  • 00:20:58.280 --> 00:21:02.080
  • They may serve in a different way.
  • 00:21:02.090 --> 00:21:06.000
  • We have to have enough breadth of spirit to understand who
  • 00:21:06.010 --> 00:21:08.190
  • the head of the church is.
  • 00:21:08.200 --> 00:21:10.000
  • We may have different styles of worship or types of worship
  • 00:21:10.010 --> 00:21:11.290
  • our podiums may be built out of different materials
  • 00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:14.230
  • and the presenter may wear a different outfit, but if Jesus
  • 00:21:14.240 --> 00:21:17.220
  • is the head of the church, we stand together.
  • 00:21:17.230 --> 00:21:22.030
  • It's not about the label, it's not about being Methodist
  • 00:21:22.040 --> 00:21:24.000
  • or Presbyterian, Episcopalian or interdenominational
  • 00:21:24.010 --> 00:21:26.200
  • or Pentecostal.
  • 00:21:26.210 --> 00:21:29.070
  • You give her any one of those labels and not participate.
  • 00:21:29.080 --> 00:21:32.100
  • Or any one of those labels and be a participant.
  • 00:21:32.110 --> 00:21:35.280
  • The label is not the distinguishing
  • 00:21:35.290 --> 00:21:37.160
  • characteristic.
  • 00:21:37.170 --> 00:21:39.150
  • There are many expressions of obedience to Christ and no
  • 00:21:39.160 --> 00:21:42.080
  • single congregation is gonna fully embraced them all.
  • 00:21:42.090 --> 00:21:47.000
  • We've been a little arrogant, prideful, self-righteous smug,
  • 00:21:47.010 --> 00:21:50.180
  • and we've diminished our effectiveness because of it.
  • 00:21:50.190 --> 00:21:54.200
  • There's a core of things about our faith that are
  • 00:21:54.210 --> 00:21:57.100
  • non-negotiable, if they're not present it isn't Christianity.
  • 00:21:57.110 --> 00:22:01.020
  • Jesus is the Son of God.
  • 00:22:01.030 --> 00:22:04.020
  • Uniquely so.
  • 00:22:04.030 --> 00:22:06.010
  • He was born physically of a virgin.
  • 00:22:06.020 --> 00:22:10.090
  • He grew to maturity.
  • 00:22:10.100 --> 00:22:14.070
  • He was crucified on a Roman cross; he died bodily on
  • 00:22:14.080 --> 00:22:17.190
  • that cross.
  • 00:22:17.200 --> 00:22:19.180
  • He was buried he was raised to life again.
  • 00:22:19.190 --> 00:22:23.060
  • He ascended to heaven.
  • 00:22:23.070 --> 00:22:26.210
  • He's coming back to the Earth.
  • 00:22:26.220 --> 00:22:29.110
  • As a conquering king and the judge of the living
  • 00:22:29.120 --> 00:22:32.150
  • and the dead.
  • 00:22:32.160 --> 00:22:35.060
  • In the interim, he's established his church and given us
  • 00:22:35.070 --> 00:22:39.290
  • an assignment.
  • 00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:42.130
  • He sent his Spirit into the world to provide
  • 00:22:42.140 --> 00:22:47.020
  • for us direction.
  • 00:22:47.030 --> 00:22:48.120
  • If you don't believe those things it isn't Christianity.
  • 00:22:48.130 --> 00:22:52.130
  • Having said that there's a whole host of things that are biblical
  • 00:22:52.140 --> 00:22:56.220
  • and valuable on which we could disagree and we can both still
  • 00:22:56.230 --> 00:23:00.200
  • go to heaven.
  • 00:23:00.210 --> 00:23:03.010
  • If that's the case, I would suggest we extend the hand
  • 00:23:03.020 --> 00:23:06.040
  • of fellowship.
  • 00:23:06.050 --> 00:23:10.210
  • Well, we take Communion with purple grape juice and you
  • 00:23:10.220 --> 00:23:13.060
  • take Communion with the red grape juice.
  • 00:23:13.070 --> 00:23:17.110
  • Who's right?
  • 00:23:17.120 --> 00:23:19.270
  • Yes.
  • 00:23:19.280 --> 00:23:23.010
  • Well, you read this translation and I read that translation.
  • 00:23:23.020 --> 00:23:27.230
  • Or your music sounds like this and my music sounds like that
  • 00:23:27.240 --> 00:23:31.130
  • or you believe the Rapture is going to take place
  • 00:23:31.140 --> 00:23:33.120
  • before the Tribulation and I believe it's going to take place
  • 00:23:33.130 --> 00:23:36.160
  • after the Tribulation.
  • 00:23:36.170 --> 00:23:40.000
  • Okay.
  • 00:23:40.010 --> 00:23:42.050
  • We can still stand together.
  • 00:23:42.060 --> 00:23:46.190
  • We have been a little confused.
  • 00:23:46.200 --> 00:23:48.090
  • See, I think we're going to have to become more sophisticated
  • 00:23:48.100 --> 00:23:51.020
  • consumers of the truth because one of the things Jesus told us
  • 00:23:51.030 --> 00:23:55.020
  • is that between where we are and his return, I believe we're
  • 00:23:55.030 --> 00:23:59.090
  • in that season that precedes the return of the Lord.
  • 00:23:59.100 --> 00:24:03.120
  • And Jesus said to us that one of the things that will occur is
  • 00:24:03.130 --> 00:24:06.250
  • an increasing expression of the false church.
  • 00:24:06.260 --> 00:24:10.280
  • So you and I, we're gonna have to have the sophistication
  • 00:24:10.290 --> 00:24:12.290
  • the maturity to distinguish between the true and the false
  • 00:24:13.000 --> 00:24:16.010
  • and if your distinguish or is only focused on the label
  • 00:24:16.020 --> 00:24:18.270
  • or the time of the week or the day in which it is, you
  • 00:24:18.280 --> 00:24:23.010
  • are ripe to be deceived.
  • 00:24:23.020 --> 00:24:26.090
  • You'll need to know the truth.
  • 00:24:26.100 --> 00:24:27.200
  • That's why we encourage you to read your Bible, to be
  • 00:24:27.210 --> 00:24:30.130
  • familiar with the truth, because we can't complete our assignment
  • 00:24:30.140 --> 00:24:36.080
  • if we are struggling with deception.
  • 00:24:36.090 --> 00:24:39.240
  • Jesus is preparing his church.
  • 00:24:39.250 --> 00:24:42.090
  • Our objective is simple: we're gonna honor Jesus is the head
  • 00:24:42.100 --> 00:24:44.200
  • of the church, that's what we wanna do.
  • 00:24:44.210 --> 00:24:47.020
  • We wanna honor him and we want to fulfill his plan.
  • 00:24:47.030 --> 00:24:51.030
  • Allen: Hey, I wanted to take a minute just to say thank you.
  • 00:24:52.150 --> 00:24:55.010
  • Thank you for your partnership for your generosity for standing
  • 00:24:55.020 --> 00:24:57.260
  • with us this year and lifting up the name of Jesus and our
  • 00:24:57.270 --> 00:25:00.250
  • nation and around the earth.
  • 00:25:00.260 --> 00:25:02.070
  • You've made a tremendous difference.
  • 00:25:02.080 --> 00:25:04.080
  • This year's coming quickly to a close and I want to ask you
  • 00:25:04.090 --> 00:25:06.290
  • to consider making a year end investment in our ministry.
  • 00:25:07.000 --> 00:25:09.240
  • Together, we're making a difference for the kingdom
  • 00:25:09.250 --> 00:25:11.170
  • of God and we got big plans for 2020.
  • 00:25:11.180 --> 00:25:14.180
  • Friend of the ministry has invested a $250.000
  • 00:25:14.190 --> 00:25:17.270
  • and a matching grant, so whatever you are able to give
  • 00:25:17.280 --> 00:25:20.090
  • in these next few weeks will be doubled because of that
  • 00:25:20.100 --> 00:25:22.130
  • generosity.
  • 00:25:22.140 --> 00:25:23.240
  • We have a unique window of opportunity in so many ways.
  • 00:25:23.250 --> 00:25:27.010
  • God is moving in the earth and he's positioned us to make
  • 00:25:27.020 --> 00:25:30.010
  • a difference.
  • 00:25:30.020 --> 00:25:31.120
  • Thank you for joining with me.
  • 00:25:31.130 --> 00:25:32.220
  • Your generosity, your sacrifices, I believe
  • 00:25:32.230 --> 00:25:34.210
  • God will respond.
  • 00:25:34.220 --> 00:25:36.020
  • The harvest fields are white.
  • 00:25:36.030 --> 00:25:37.140
  • I want to say a prayer with you before we go.
  • 00:25:37.150 --> 00:25:39.150
  • Father, I thank you for every partner for
  • 00:25:39.160 --> 00:25:41.110
  • every person that stands with us for their generosity
  • 00:25:41.120 --> 00:25:43.160
  • for their gifts.
  • 00:25:43.170 --> 00:25:45.030
  • Lord, I pray that you'll respond not only the prayers they
  • 00:25:45.040 --> 00:25:48.060
  • have offered but to their faith that the name of Jesus might be
  • 00:25:48.070 --> 00:25:50.180
  • lifted up and your kingdom extended in Jesus's name, amen.
  • 00:25:50.190 --> 00:25:54.250
  • God bless you.
  • 00:25:54.260 --> 00:25:56.160
  • male announcer: As a token of our appreciation we'll send you
  • 00:25:57.200 --> 00:25:59.100
  • this beautiful new NIV Bible when you give today.

  • Remember, every gift you give today will be matched dollar
