  • Tony Evans: Things you've done a long time ago
  • 00:00:01.010 --> 00:00:04.230
  • that you think were missed, passed over, ignored,
  • 00:00:04.240 --> 00:00:08.110
  • on God's clock, he knows how to bring that thing back up
  • 00:00:08.120 --> 00:00:13.030
  • at the right time to accomplish his bigger purposes.
  • 00:00:13.040 --> 00:00:18.090
  • You don't know who you're dealing with.
  • 00:00:20.250 --> 00:00:23.100
  • So, you can praise the Lord today
  • 00:00:26.100 --> 00:00:28.150
  • that Goliath does not have the last say over your life,
  • 00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:32.000
  • over your circumstance, over your family,
  • 00:00:32.010 --> 00:00:34.260
  • over your feelings, over your world
  • 00:00:34.270 --> 00:00:37.150
  • 'cause you know somebody up there that's bigger than
  • 00:00:37.160 --> 00:00:40.150
  • the somebody you're facing down here,
  • 00:00:40.160 --> 00:00:43.280
  • and if he will not remove himself from ruining your life,
  • 00:00:43.290 --> 00:00:48.220
  • he's got enough forces to remove them from you.
  • 00:00:48.230 --> 00:00:52.210
  • Bless the name of the Lord, he can turn your Goliath around
  • 00:00:52.220 --> 00:00:57.110
  • 'cause he's a game changer.
  • 00:00:57.120 --> 00:00:59.070
  • My closing question this morning is,
  • 00:01:00.270 --> 00:01:02.090
  • does anybody need a reversal?
  • 00:01:02.100 --> 00:01:04.250
  • Is anybody here today who's terminal?
  • 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:09.140
  • Is there anybody here who's in a crisis and you can't fix it?
  • 00:01:09.150 --> 00:01:14.140
  • It's too big, it's too deep.
  • 00:01:14.150 --> 00:01:17.010
  • You can't get your arms around it,
  • 00:01:17.020 --> 00:01:18.160
  • and you are literally dying.
  • 00:01:18.170 --> 00:01:22.250
  • It's killing you.
  • 00:01:22.260 --> 00:01:24.190
  • God knows the right time to turn your situation around.
  • 00:01:24.200 --> 00:01:29.260
  • I'm trying to tell you, you don't know
  • 00:01:29.270 --> 00:01:31.240
  • who you're dealing with.
  • 00:01:31.250 --> 00:01:34.090
  • That's what you're doing, communion.
  • 00:01:34.100 --> 00:01:35.190
  • Do this in remembrance of me, that I defeated him
  • 00:01:35.200 --> 00:01:39.190
  • on Calvary and I'm still whipping him today.
  • 00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:42.150
  • I want to challenge you to live under the providential hand
  • 00:01:43.200 --> 00:01:47.140
  • of God even when it looks like it's not working out.
  • 00:01:47.150 --> 00:01:52.200
  • Tony: We're told about a lame man.
  • 00:02:01.270 --> 00:02:06.000
  • The description of the man is given in verse 2.
  • 00:02:06.010 --> 00:02:09.150
  • We're told a number of things about this man.
  • 00:02:09.160 --> 00:02:12.080
  • First of all, we are told that he is lame.
  • 00:02:12.090 --> 00:02:17.090
  • He's a cripple.
  • 00:02:18.100 --> 00:02:20.190
  • But we're told he was a cripple from his mother's womb.
  • 00:02:20.200 --> 00:02:25.040
  • So, ever since he was born, he's been crippled.
  • 00:02:25.050 --> 00:02:29.220
  • That means he was not able to stand on his own two feet.
  • 00:02:29.230 --> 00:02:34.220
  • He couldn't stand on his own two feet,
  • 00:02:34.230 --> 00:02:37.130
  • and according to chapter 4, verse 22,
  • 00:02:37.140 --> 00:02:40.170
  • the man is 40 years old.
  • 00:02:40.180 --> 00:02:43.160
  • So, for half of a lifetime, this man was not able
  • 00:02:43.170 --> 00:02:47.150
  • to stand up on his own.
  • 00:02:47.160 --> 00:02:50.190
  • We're told a second thing about this man.
  • 00:02:50.200 --> 00:02:53.270
  • We're told that his whole life depended upon what other folk
  • 00:02:53.280 --> 00:02:57.280
  • did for him 'cause it says, every day he was carried
  • 00:02:57.290 --> 00:03:02.240
  • by other folk to beg.
  • 00:03:02.250 --> 00:03:07.040
  • See, you know you lame when everybody else
  • 00:03:07.050 --> 00:03:10.050
  • has got to take care of you, when everybody else
  • 00:03:10.060 --> 00:03:12.200
  • has got to bring you to where you need to go
  • 00:03:12.210 --> 00:03:15.120
  • because you're not able to get there on your own.
  • 00:03:15.130 --> 00:03:19.250
  • And what's interesting about verse 2 is,
  • 00:03:19.260 --> 00:03:22.190
  • he was at the church house every day.
  • 00:03:22.200 --> 00:03:25.130
  • It says he went to the gate called "Beautiful"
  • 00:03:25.140 --> 00:03:28.050
  • that was at the temple.
  • 00:03:28.060 --> 00:03:30.010
  • And you can be at the church house every single day
  • 00:03:30.020 --> 00:03:33.020
  • and still wind up to be a lame man,
  • 00:03:33.030 --> 00:03:35.280
  • not able to stand up on your own two feet,
  • 00:03:35.290 --> 00:03:38.210
  • 'cause even though he was at church,
  • 00:03:38.220 --> 00:03:40.130
  • nothing had changed in his life.
  • 00:03:40.140 --> 00:03:43.160
  • We are living in a day when far too many men are lame.
  • 00:03:43.170 --> 00:03:47.130
  • They may not be physically lame, they may be able
  • 00:03:47.140 --> 00:03:51.290
  • to physically stand up,
  • 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:54.040
  • but that's not the only kind of lameness.
  • 00:03:54.050 --> 00:03:56.180
  • There is mental lameness, where the man is not able
  • 00:03:56.190 --> 00:04:01.060
  • to have the cognitive capacity to take on
  • 00:04:01.070 --> 00:04:04.130
  • his manly responsibility.
  • 00:04:04.140 --> 00:04:07.050
  • There is social lameness, where men are expecting
  • 00:04:07.060 --> 00:04:12.010
  • the government to do what God has called them to do.
  • 00:04:12.020 --> 00:04:15.260
  • There's spiritual lameness, where the woman has got to lead
  • 00:04:15.270 --> 00:04:19.290
  • the devotions, has got to pray with the kids 'cause he's
  • 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:22.210
  • too lame to take the time to be the spiritual head of his home.
  • 00:04:22.220 --> 00:04:27.130
  • And so, we find this man in this physical condition,
  • 00:04:27.140 --> 00:04:31.210
  • but it's put in this passage to make the spiritual point
  • 00:04:31.220 --> 00:04:36.260
  • that he was not able to make it on his own.
  • 00:04:36.270 --> 00:04:42.140
  • And so, as a result of that, everybody else
  • 00:04:42.150 --> 00:04:45.190
  • had to take care of him, and he was living as a beggar.
  • 00:04:45.200 --> 00:04:50.200
  • So, that's the circumstance.
  • 00:04:50.210 --> 00:04:53.000
  • But now we enter two other men.
  • 00:04:53.010 --> 00:04:55.240
  • Verse 1 says Peter and John were going into the temple
  • 00:04:55.250 --> 00:05:01.090
  • at the ninth hour, that's 3 p.m.,
  • 00:05:01.100 --> 00:05:03.230
  • the hour of prayer.
  • 00:05:03.240 --> 00:05:06.090
  • So, now enter two other men, Peter and John.
  • 00:05:06.100 --> 00:05:10.140
  • Peter and John are going at 3 o'clock in the afternoon
  • 00:05:10.150 --> 00:05:14.250
  • to pray.
  • 00:05:14.260 --> 00:05:16.190
  • Now, that's going to be important in a second.
  • 00:05:16.200 --> 00:05:18.170
  • They are taking their lunch hour, if you will,
  • 00:05:18.180 --> 00:05:22.140
  • to go into the house of prayer, into the temple,
  • 00:05:22.150 --> 00:05:26.280
  • to connect with the living and true God.
  • 00:05:26.290 --> 00:05:30.150
  • On their way in, they pass by the lame man,
  • 00:05:30.160 --> 00:05:34.290
  • and then the story unfolds.
  • 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:39.010
  • When Peter and John were about to enter the temple, verse 3,
  • 00:05:39.020 --> 00:05:44.180
  • he began asking to receive alms, that is begging for money.
  • 00:05:44.190 --> 00:05:50.220
  • Peter looks at him, along with John,
  • 00:05:50.230 --> 00:05:55.080
  • fixes his gaze on him according to verse 4,
  • 00:05:55.090 --> 00:05:59.040
  • and says to the lame man, to the beggar,
  • 00:05:59.050 --> 00:06:03.220
  • to the dependent one, "Look at us."
  • 00:06:03.230 --> 00:06:08.140
  • So, I want your, watch this, undivided attention.
  • 00:06:08.150 --> 00:06:12.040
  • Verse 5, he began to give them his attention.
  • 00:06:12.050 --> 00:06:16.040
  • So, he pays attention.
  • 00:06:16.050 --> 00:06:18.090
  • Peter's saying, "Pay attention."
  • 00:06:18.100 --> 00:06:19.240
  • He says, "Okay," 'cause why?
  • 00:06:19.250 --> 00:06:22.000
  • Expecting to receive something from them.
  • 00:06:22.010 --> 00:06:25.230
  • Peter says to him, "I do not possess silver and gold."
  • 00:06:25.240 --> 00:06:31.250
  • "Oh, you guys-- Oh, you got to be kidding me.
  • 00:06:31.260 --> 00:06:34.290
  • You going to tell me pay attention,
  • 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:36.090
  • then you going to tell me you ain't got nothing?
  • 00:06:36.100 --> 00:06:38.260
  • You going to tell me, you know, the bank is broke."
  • 00:06:38.270 --> 00:06:41.210
  • "I have not silver and gold.
  • 00:06:41.220 --> 00:06:45.040
  • You've asked me for money, and I can't help you."
  • 00:06:45.050 --> 00:06:50.270
  • And so, he says, "Silver and gold,
  • 00:06:50.280 --> 00:06:55.190
  • I don't have that."
  • 00:06:55.200 --> 00:06:58.260
  • But then he adds to it in verse 6,
  • 00:06:58.270 --> 00:07:01.180
  • "But what I do have-- I don't have what you asked for.
  • 00:07:01.190 --> 00:07:10.030
  • You asked for money, you asked for alms.
  • 00:07:10.040 --> 00:07:12.210
  • But I have something.
  • 00:07:12.220 --> 00:07:14.270
  • In fact, what I have, money can't buy."
  • 00:07:14.280 --> 00:07:20.160
  • And here's where it gets beautiful.
  • 00:07:20.170 --> 00:07:24.040
  • He says, "What I have, I'm going to give to you."
  • 00:07:24.050 --> 00:07:28.030
  • I love the word "give" because the word "give" is a grace word.
  • 00:07:28.040 --> 00:07:32.150
  • Give cannot be earned.
  • 00:07:32.160 --> 00:07:34.230
  • He doesn't say you have to earn it, but he says,
  • 00:07:34.240 --> 00:07:36.080
  • "I'll give it to you."
  • 00:07:36.090 --> 00:07:38.060
  • So, what Peter says is, "I got something,
  • 00:07:38.070 --> 00:07:40.260
  • but it's not what you have.
  • 00:07:40.270 --> 00:07:42.120
  • I have something, but it's not what you asked for.
  • 00:07:42.130 --> 00:07:45.040
  • What I have I give to you.
  • 00:07:45.050 --> 00:07:48.140
  • In the name," somebody say, "In the name."
  • 00:07:48.150 --> 00:07:51.040
  • "In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk."
  • 00:07:51.050 --> 00:07:56.240
  • 00:07:56.250 --> 00:08:06.260
  • 00:08:06.270 --> 00:08:13.040
  • Tony: Friends, God continues to expand the ministry
  • 00:08:13.050 --> 00:08:15.120
  • of the Urban Alternative.
  • 00:08:15.130 --> 00:08:17.130
  • Our ministry on radio and television
  • 00:08:17.140 --> 00:08:19.200
  • can now be received in India, England, Canada,
  • 00:08:19.210 --> 00:08:24.120
  • places where there are a very small percentage
  • 00:08:24.130 --> 00:08:27.030
  • of Christians who need to hear the good news
  • 00:08:27.040 --> 00:08:29.110
  • of the gospel, as well as, to grow in their faith.
  • 00:08:29.120 --> 00:08:33.030
  • And that's where you come in.
  • 00:08:33.040 --> 00:08:34.270
  • Your generosity helps us to be on radio and television,
  • 00:08:34.280 --> 00:08:39.060
  • to get the Word of God into the minds, hearts,
  • 00:08:39.070 --> 00:08:42.100
  • and lives of people.
  • 00:08:42.110 --> 00:08:45.110
  • On giving Tuesday, you have the opportunity
  • 00:08:45.120 --> 00:08:47.040
  • to help us with a match that has been offered to us
  • 00:08:47.050 --> 00:08:50.160
  • of $105.000.
  • 00:08:50.170 --> 00:08:53.110
  • This will help us to continue to expand the ministry
  • 00:08:53.120 --> 00:08:56.160
  • of God's Word worldwide.
  • 00:08:56.170 --> 00:08:59.030
  • Thank you for your support.
  • 00:08:59.040 --> 00:09:00.280
  • May God bless you richly as you serve him
  • 00:09:00.290 --> 00:09:04.040
  • through this ministry.
  • 00:09:04.050 --> 00:09:05.260
  • We can't do it without you.
  • 00:09:05.270 --> 00:09:08.220
  • Tony: "In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene,
  • 00:09:10.170 --> 00:09:14.290
  • stop being lame anymore.
  • 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:18.170
  • I want you to get up and stand up on your own two feet."
  • 00:09:18.180 --> 00:09:23.070
  • In the name, so let me talk about the name.
  • 00:09:23.080 --> 00:09:29.100
  • In the Bible, names have meaning.
  • 00:09:29.110 --> 00:09:32.270
  • Names are not merely nomenclature,
  • 00:09:32.280 --> 00:09:35.260
  • they're not merely words given to people.
  • 00:09:35.270 --> 00:09:39.180
  • Names matter because they were designed
  • 00:09:39.190 --> 00:09:41.160
  • to fit the reputation or the character of the person
  • 00:09:41.170 --> 00:09:46.010
  • or place that is named.
  • 00:09:46.020 --> 00:09:48.160
  • So, when you look at something that has a name,
  • 00:09:48.170 --> 00:09:52.030
  • it's giving you something that has to do with the reputation
  • 00:09:52.040 --> 00:09:57.020
  • or the character of the person or place that receives the name.
  • 00:09:57.030 --> 00:10:02.000
  • So, let me tell you why this name matters in this context.
  • 00:10:02.010 --> 00:10:06.140
  • In chapter 4, verse 7, when they had placed them
  • 00:10:06.150 --> 00:10:11.240
  • in the center, they began to inquire
  • 00:10:11.250 --> 00:10:14.240
  • of Peter and John,
  • 00:10:14.250 --> 00:10:16.130
  • "By what power or in what name have you done this?"
  • 00:10:16.140 --> 00:10:22.080
  • So, they're telling the man to walk.
  • 00:10:22.090 --> 00:10:24.220
  • The leaders want to know, "Under whose authority,
  • 00:10:24.230 --> 00:10:28.150
  • and in whose power, and by what name,
  • 00:10:28.160 --> 00:10:33.140
  • did you tell this lame man to walk?"
  • 00:10:33.150 --> 00:10:35.180
  • Now, why do I want you to know that?
  • 00:10:35.190 --> 00:10:37.110
  • Because the word "name" is associated with the word,
  • 00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:40.270
  • "power," okay?
  • 00:10:40.280 --> 00:10:43.060
  • Name, power.
  • 00:10:43.070 --> 00:10:45.080
  • They want to know what power has a name attached to it
  • 00:10:45.090 --> 00:10:50.080
  • that you could tell this lame man to walk.
  • 00:10:50.090 --> 00:10:53.110
  • So, now, when you read in chapter 3,
  • 00:10:53.120 --> 00:10:57.150
  • "In the name of Jesus, walk," they were literally saying,
  • 00:10:57.160 --> 00:11:01.270
  • "By the power of Jesus, walk," because the name was tied
  • 00:11:01.280 --> 00:11:07.060
  • to the power associated with the name.
  • 00:11:07.070 --> 00:11:10.070
  • Let me show you Peter's response in chapter 4.
  • 00:11:10.080 --> 00:11:13.060
  • Peter responds in verse 10, "Let it be known to all of you
  • 00:11:13.070 --> 00:11:18.070
  • and to all the people of Israel that by the name
  • 00:11:18.080 --> 00:11:22.240
  • of Jesus the Nazarene, whom you crucified,
  • 00:11:22.250 --> 00:11:26.280
  • whom God raised from the dead,
  • 00:11:26.290 --> 00:11:28.260
  • by this name this man stands before you in good health."
  • 00:11:28.270 --> 00:11:33.200
  • Verse 12, "And there is salvation in no one else,
  • 00:11:33.210 --> 00:11:37.270
  • for there is no other name under heaven
  • 00:11:37.280 --> 00:11:41.260
  • that has been given among men whereby you must be saved."
  • 00:11:41.270 --> 00:11:46.110
  • So, when they tell the man to walk,
  • 00:11:46.120 --> 00:11:48.110
  • they tell the man to walk by the name or according
  • 00:11:48.120 --> 00:11:52.070
  • to the power that belongs to Jesus Christ.
  • 00:11:52.080 --> 00:11:57.080
  • He says, "In the name," that is the power,
  • 00:11:57.090 --> 00:12:00.120
  • "of Jesus Christ," watch this, "of Nazareth."
  • 00:12:00.130 --> 00:12:05.050
  • Why does he say of Nazareth?
  • 00:12:05.060 --> 00:12:07.200
  • Well, that means you need to know something about Nazareth.
  • 00:12:07.210 --> 00:12:10.080
  • If you recall, the question was raised to Jesus Christ
  • 00:12:10.090 --> 00:12:13.160
  • early on in the book of John,
  • 00:12:13.170 --> 00:12:15.200
  • "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?"
  • 00:12:15.210 --> 00:12:19.040
  • You see, Nazareth was a no name town.
  • 00:12:19.050 --> 00:12:22.200
  • Nazareth was a town you didn't want to go in
  • 00:12:22.210 --> 00:12:25.160
  • and you didn't want to go through.
  • 00:12:25.170 --> 00:12:27.170
  • So, you telling me that the Jesus from Nazareth
  • 00:12:27.180 --> 00:12:30.250
  • has the power to make this man walk?
  • 00:12:30.260 --> 00:12:34.040
  • So, why am I telling you that?
  • 00:12:34.050 --> 00:12:36.060
  • I'm telling you that, 'cause if you from Nazareth,
  • 00:12:36.070 --> 00:12:40.070
  • that is, you didn't come from a good background,
  • 00:12:40.080 --> 00:12:42.290
  • you didn't come from a great beginning,
  • 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:45.210
  • you didn't come from the nice neighborhood,
  • 00:12:45.220 --> 00:12:48.060
  • and you've been messed up for 40 years,
  • 00:12:48.070 --> 00:12:51.160
  • I want to tell you Jesus is from Nazareth.
  • 00:12:51.170 --> 00:12:54.110
  • So, Jesus can meet you no matter where you came from.
  • 00:12:54.120 --> 00:12:58.190
  • All that may be real, but Jesus was from Nazareth.
  • 00:12:58.200 --> 00:13:02.080
  • He was from a no name place, so he can meet any man,
  • 00:13:02.090 --> 00:13:06.080
  • in any place, at any time,
  • 00:13:06.090 --> 00:13:08.280
  • even when your life is half over,
  • 00:13:08.290 --> 00:13:11.220
  • and he can turn that thing around,
  • 00:13:11.230 --> 00:13:13.260
  • 'cause Jesus is from the hood.
  • 00:13:13.270 --> 00:13:16.150
  • Jesus is from Nazareth, and he can meet any man,
  • 00:13:16.160 --> 00:13:20.010
  • in any place, at any time, even though
  • 00:13:20.020 --> 00:13:23.160
  • you haven't walked for all of your lifetime.
  • 00:13:23.170 --> 00:13:26.230
  • Once I bring Jesus the Christ of Nazareth into the equation,
  • 00:13:26.240 --> 00:13:32.200
  • I have now changed the story, and I can now tell you,
  • 00:13:32.210 --> 00:13:36.090
  • "Get up, mister.
  • 00:13:36.100 --> 00:13:37.290
  • Get up, man.
  • 00:13:38.000 --> 00:13:39.090
  • It's time to walk.
  • 00:13:39.100 --> 00:13:41.290
  • It's time to own it, to take responsibility
  • 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:44.180
  • because there's power in the name of Jesus,
  • 00:13:44.190 --> 00:13:48.100
  • even when there's not money on the table."
  • 00:13:48.110 --> 00:13:51.070
  • He says, "Silver and gold I do not have."
  • 00:13:51.080 --> 00:13:54.110
  • All right, so he tells him to get up and walk.
  • 00:13:54.120 --> 00:13:57.240
  • Oh, but it's getting gooder.
  • 00:13:57.250 --> 00:14:00.140
  • Verse 7, "And seizing him."
  • 00:14:00.150 --> 00:14:05.240
  • Mm, seizing him, that means grabbing him.
  • 00:14:05.250 --> 00:14:12.130
  • To seize is to grab.
  • 00:14:12.140 --> 00:14:14.280
  • So, he pronounces the power of God,
  • 00:14:14.290 --> 00:14:19.220
  • but he doesn't sit there with his hands folded waiting
  • 00:14:19.230 --> 00:14:22.130
  • for this man to be zapped from heaven.
  • 00:14:22.140 --> 00:14:25.160
  • No, what this man ran into were two men who were not lame
  • 00:14:25.170 --> 00:14:33.210
  • 'cause they were walking, who were willing to grab a man
  • 00:14:33.220 --> 00:14:37.060
  • who couldn't walk, didn't think he would ever walk,
  • 00:14:37.070 --> 00:14:40.160
  • but introduce him to Jesus Christ,
  • 00:14:40.170 --> 00:14:43.030
  • and then grab him and make him walk.
  • 00:14:43.040 --> 00:14:46.040
  • See, we got a generation of men out here
  • 00:14:46.050 --> 00:14:48.150
  • where somebody need to grab.
  • 00:14:48.160 --> 00:14:51.070
  • The problem is, the wrong folk been grabbing them.
  • 00:14:51.080 --> 00:14:54.050
  • And they've been grabbing them,
  • 00:14:54.060 --> 00:14:55.160
  • taking them in the wrong direction.
  • 00:14:55.170 --> 00:14:57.060
  • Hasn't been spiritual men, godly men,
  • 00:14:57.070 --> 00:14:59.020
  • kingdom men grabbing.
  • 00:14:59.030 --> 00:15:00.250
  • It's been cultural men, societal men,
  • 00:15:00.260 --> 00:15:03.020
  • crazy men that's grabbing them.
  • 00:15:03.030 --> 00:15:05.020
  • But the good news about the man is,
  • 00:15:05.030 --> 00:15:06.280
  • he allowed himself to be grabbed.
  • 00:15:06.290 --> 00:15:10.100
  • See, that's his side.
  • 00:15:10.110 --> 00:15:11.220
  • They grabbed and he became grabbable.
  • 00:15:11.230 --> 00:15:15.120
  • There are a lot of grabbable men out here if they could only find
  • 00:15:15.130 --> 00:15:18.190
  • a Peter and John willing to grab them.
  • 00:15:18.200 --> 00:15:22.090
  • Peter said, "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
  • 00:15:22.100 --> 00:15:25.040
  • walk."
  • 00:15:25.050 --> 00:15:26.150
  • There are people in the New Testament,
  • 00:15:28.250 --> 00:15:30.060
  • even in the book of Acts, who used Jesus's name
  • 00:15:30.070 --> 00:15:32.040
  • and nothing happened.
  • 00:15:32.050 --> 00:15:35.130
  • Nothing happened.
  • 00:15:35.140 --> 00:15:37.140
  • There was power in the name, but there wasn't connection
  • 00:15:37.150 --> 00:15:40.080
  • with the purpose, with the person.
  • 00:15:40.090 --> 00:15:43.000
  • There's power in the name, but the power in the name
  • 00:15:43.010 --> 00:15:47.030
  • can only be used by a person who bears connection with the name.
  • 00:15:47.040 --> 00:15:52.190
  • So, you can say, "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus," all day long.
  • 00:15:52.200 --> 00:15:55.230
  • You can sing, "In the name of Jesus,
  • 00:15:55.240 --> 00:15:57.160
  • in the name of Jesus, we have the victory."
  • 00:15:57.170 --> 00:15:59.240
  • You can do that all day long, but if there's not connection
  • 00:15:59.250 --> 00:16:04.040
  • with the person, you will not be able
  • 00:16:04.050 --> 00:16:06.170
  • to display the power of the name.
  • 00:16:06.180 --> 00:16:09.000
  • That is why every man is to passionately pursue a intimate,
  • 00:16:09.010 --> 00:16:15.020
  • personal relationship with Jesus Christ,
  • 00:16:15.030 --> 00:16:18.030
  • so when you use the name, he'll share the power.
  • 00:16:18.040 --> 00:16:21.060
  • Jesus doesn't share the power.
  • 00:16:21.070 --> 00:16:22.190
  • You say, "I'm trying to change my wife, or change my kids,
  • 00:16:22.200 --> 00:16:26.160
  • and I call on the name of Jesus and nothing happens."
  • 00:16:26.170 --> 00:16:29.050
  • Well, God wants to know, what's the connection like?
  • 00:16:29.060 --> 00:16:32.050
  • 'Cause you can't expect your appliances to work
  • 00:16:32.060 --> 00:16:34.240
  • if they're not plugged into some power.
  • 00:16:34.250 --> 00:16:38.100
  • You can say, "Refrigerator, refrigerator," all day long,
  • 00:16:38.110 --> 00:16:41.010
  • "Stove, cook," all day long, but if you're not plugged
  • 00:16:41.020 --> 00:16:44.010
  • into the power, you just talking smack.
  • 00:16:44.020 --> 00:16:49.040
  • Peter says, "What I have, I give to you,
  • 00:16:49.050 --> 00:16:53.070
  • 'cause I'm so connected to the name that he's going to allow me
  • 00:16:53.080 --> 00:16:57.110
  • to piggyback on the power so I can help another man
  • 00:16:57.120 --> 00:17:00.290
  • who is lame himself."
  • 00:17:01.000 --> 00:17:03.050
  • Oh, but it gets gooder 'cause it says,
  • 00:17:04.200 --> 00:17:09.200
  • "Seizing him by his right hand, he raised him up,
  • 00:17:09.210 --> 00:17:15.090
  • and immediately."
  • 00:17:15.100 --> 00:17:18.210
  • I said immediately, his feet and his ankles were strengthened.
  • 00:17:18.220 --> 00:17:27.040
  • Mm, there's a lot here.
  • 00:17:27.050 --> 00:17:29.200
  • First of all, he was crippled from his mother's womb,
  • 00:17:29.210 --> 00:17:34.200
  • so he has a birth issue.
  • 00:17:34.210 --> 00:17:39.080
  • But he's been inactive for 40 years
  • 00:17:39.090 --> 00:17:42.130
  • 'cause he can't use his legs.
  • 00:17:42.140 --> 00:17:44.290
  • So, that means they are atrophied.
  • 00:17:45.000 --> 00:17:47.180
  • So, there is a crippling problem that he was born with,
  • 00:17:47.190 --> 00:17:51.130
  • and then there's unused muscles for 40 years.
  • 00:17:51.140 --> 00:17:56.030
  • So, he's got a physical problem and a weakness
  • 00:17:56.040 --> 00:18:01.060
  • 'cause there's no strength in his limbs.
  • 00:18:01.070 --> 00:18:04.230
  • But when the power of Jesus set in, it says immediately.
  • 00:18:04.240 --> 00:18:11.050
  • Whenever God wants to show off if I can use that phrase,
  • 00:18:11.060 --> 00:18:15.210
  • whenever he wants to show out, he will not do
  • 00:18:15.220 --> 00:18:18.240
  • something progressively, he'll do it on the spot.
  • 00:18:18.250 --> 00:18:23.110
  • See, that's why you need to know who you dealing with.
  • 00:18:23.120 --> 00:18:27.020
  • You say, "Well, nothing has happened yet."
  • 00:18:27.030 --> 00:18:30.040
  • Okay, but you have to understand,
  • 00:18:30.050 --> 00:18:32.270
  • God doesn't need time, he needs purpose.
  • 00:18:32.280 --> 00:18:38.090
  • And sometimes, he will not let things slowly progress.
  • 00:18:38.100 --> 00:18:43.220
  • He will let them stay in a state until you are ready
  • 00:18:43.230 --> 00:18:49.060
  • for a supernatural infusion of his presence.
  • 00:18:49.070 --> 00:18:54.130
  • This man has been 40 years-- but it took him 40 years
  • 00:18:54.140 --> 00:18:58.290
  • to be ready for this moment.
  • 00:18:59.000 --> 00:19:01.150
  • And at the moment that he was ready,
  • 00:19:01.160 --> 00:19:04.230
  • God connected him with the two men who had access to the power.
  • 00:19:04.240 --> 00:19:10.130
  • So, if you're here today and you a lame man,
  • 00:19:10.140 --> 00:19:13.160
  • you better find some Peter and Johns who are praying men
  • 00:19:13.170 --> 00:19:17.210
  • on their way into the temple, who refuse to let you stay
  • 00:19:17.220 --> 00:19:22.060
  • in your stupor, in your lameness.
  • 00:19:22.070 --> 00:19:25.170
  • You say, "Well, my father beat my mother,
  • 00:19:25.180 --> 00:19:28.170
  • and he had an anger problem,
  • 00:19:28.180 --> 00:19:30.080
  • and I inherited his anger problem."
  • 00:19:30.090 --> 00:19:32.170
  • You better find two men who know how to control their emotions,
  • 00:19:32.180 --> 00:19:37.190
  • who don't have to cuss after every other word
  • 00:19:37.200 --> 00:19:39.270
  • to make their point, and let those men grab you.
  • 00:19:39.280 --> 00:19:44.000
  • You say, "I ain't going to let no woman tell me what to do."
  • 00:19:44.010 --> 00:19:46.150
  • Good, then you better find some men bigger than you
  • 00:19:46.160 --> 00:19:49.200
  • who can tell you what to do so that you can no longer live
  • 00:19:49.210 --> 00:19:53.130
  • in lameness,
  • 00:19:53.140 --> 00:19:54.250
  • because who knows, you may be an immediate person
  • 00:19:54.260 --> 00:19:59.030
  • that God wants to turn it around on the spot.
  • 00:19:59.040 --> 00:20:01.290
  • And you want to know how did that happen.
  • 00:20:02.000 --> 00:20:04.000
  • It says his ankles and his feet were strengthened,
  • 00:20:05.150 --> 00:20:09.160
  • a supernatural infusion of power.
  • 00:20:09.170 --> 00:20:16.070
  • Verse 8, "With a leap, he stood upright
  • 00:20:16.080 --> 00:20:20.100
  • and began to walk."
  • 00:20:20.110 --> 00:20:22.140
  • He jumped up.
  • 00:20:22.150 --> 00:20:25.040
  • He began to walk, he didn't start crawling first.
  • 00:20:25.050 --> 00:20:28.270
  • He began to walk.
  • 00:20:28.280 --> 00:20:32.060
  • Now, let me say a word to the Peter and Johns that are here.
  • 00:20:32.070 --> 00:20:37.020
  • Okay, maybe you're not a lame man.
  • 00:20:37.030 --> 00:20:39.170
  • Maybe you're a Peter and a John, which is great,
  • 00:20:39.180 --> 00:20:44.140
  • but if you're going to be a Peter and a John,
  • 00:20:44.150 --> 00:20:46.190
  • you have to be willing to let God interrupt your plans,
  • 00:20:46.200 --> 00:20:50.010
  • even when it's going to a prayer meeting,
  • 00:20:50.020 --> 00:20:52.250
  • 'cause see, they were on their way.
  • 00:20:52.260 --> 00:20:54.050
  • They could've said, "I got to pray now."
  • 00:20:54.060 --> 00:20:57.100
  • But God lets things cross your path
  • 00:20:57.110 --> 00:20:59.250
  • that he wants you to minister to.
  • 00:20:59.260 --> 00:21:02.080
  • He lets young men cross your path,
  • 00:21:02.090 --> 00:21:04.030
  • or older men cross your path who need to be grabbed,
  • 00:21:04.040 --> 00:21:08.270
  • like the man in John 5 who was there for 38 years.
  • 00:21:08.280 --> 00:21:13.170
  • He told Jesus, "I have no one to help me.
  • 00:21:13.180 --> 00:21:18.030
  • Nobody stops by to help me to get me
  • 00:21:18.040 --> 00:21:20.190
  • into the cleansing water to change my life."
  • 00:21:20.200 --> 00:21:23.180
  • We got a generation of men out there,
  • 00:21:23.190 --> 00:21:25.110
  • and the Peter and Johns don't stop.
  • 00:21:25.120 --> 00:21:28.260
  • You can't stop for everybody, but you can stop for somebody
  • 00:21:28.270 --> 00:21:33.010
  • so that this generation that's being ticked off by the devil,
  • 00:21:33.020 --> 00:21:37.080
  • particularly our boys and young men,
  • 00:21:37.090 --> 00:21:39.130
  • they've got to be grabbed by some Peter and Johns
  • 00:21:39.140 --> 00:21:43.010
  • who are on their way to the temple to pray.
  • 00:21:43.020 --> 00:21:46.080
  • The man leaps up.
  • 00:21:46.090 --> 00:21:48.130
  • And when the man leaps up, he enters the temple with them,
  • 00:21:48.140 --> 00:21:54.270
  • walking and leaping and praising God.
  • 00:21:54.280 --> 00:21:57.130
  • Now, that's interesting.
  • 00:21:57.140 --> 00:21:59.240
  • You mean you hadn't gone to the Bible institute yet?
  • 00:21:59.250 --> 00:22:04.040
  • Let me tell you what will ignite your prayer life,
  • 00:22:04.050 --> 00:22:06.290
  • when God gives you a testimony, okay?
  • 00:22:07.000 --> 00:22:11.000
  • When God gives you a testimony, you don't need a program.
  • 00:22:14.000 --> 00:22:18.230
  • The man jumped up right then and said,
  • 00:22:18.240 --> 00:22:20.290
  • "Where you all going?"
  • 00:22:21.000 --> 00:22:22.090
  • Peter and John said, "We going to pray."
  • 00:22:22.100 --> 00:22:23.190
  • "I'm going to pray with you, and I'm going,
  • 00:22:23.200 --> 00:22:25.040
  • and I'm getting my praise on."
  • 00:22:25.050 --> 00:22:28.140
  • Because see, when God moves in your life,
  • 00:22:28.150 --> 00:22:32.080
  • you don't need to be cute anymore.
  • 00:22:32.090 --> 00:22:34.190
  • You don't need to be saditty and sophisticated.
  • 00:22:34.200 --> 00:22:38.030
  • When God has done his thing in your life,
  • 00:22:38.040 --> 00:22:40.230
  • you're going to let it be known, and I'm going to declare to God,
  • 00:22:40.240 --> 00:22:44.120
  • "I don't care who listening, I don't care where I'm at."
  • 00:22:44.130 --> 00:22:48.160
  • Do you know this whole prayer meeting changed?
  • 00:22:48.170 --> 00:22:51.260
  • Peter and John were going into one prayer meeting.
  • 00:22:51.270 --> 00:22:53.290
  • When this man showed up,
  • 00:22:54.000 --> 00:22:55.220
  • the whole prayer meeting changed.
  • 00:22:55.230 --> 00:22:57.090
  • And I know the prayer meeting changed
  • 00:22:57.100 --> 00:22:59.090
  • because of what happened in chapter 4.
  • 00:22:59.100 --> 00:23:01.160
  • Everybody start talking about what happened
  • 00:23:01.170 --> 00:23:03.250
  • in this lame man's life, who was immediately transformed.
  • 00:23:03.260 --> 00:23:07.100
  • And according to chapter 4, verse 4,
  • 00:23:07.110 --> 00:23:09.200
  • here's what we read, "But many of those who heard
  • 00:23:09.210 --> 00:23:13.040
  • the message believed, and the number of the men
  • 00:23:13.050 --> 00:23:15.230
  • came to be about 5.000."
  • 00:23:15.240 --> 00:23:19.100
  • No, you didn't.
  • 00:23:19.110 --> 00:23:21.150
  • Wait a minute, Peter and John started ministering
  • 00:23:21.160 --> 00:23:24.230
  • to one lame man.
  • 00:23:24.240 --> 00:23:26.200
  • A few minutes later, 5.000 brothers get saved.
  • 00:23:26.210 --> 00:23:31.000
  • That's because when God gives you a testimony,
  • 00:23:31.010 --> 00:23:35.050
  • he wants you to touch somebody else.
  • 00:23:35.060 --> 00:23:37.150
  • When God gives you a testimony, he wants other men
  • 00:23:37.160 --> 00:23:40.240
  • in your circle of influence to get saved
  • 00:23:40.250 --> 00:23:44.000
  • and to get transformed.
  • 00:23:44.010 --> 00:23:45.250
  • So, if all you're doing is coming to church service,
  • 00:23:45.260 --> 00:23:48.130
  • and all you're doing is coming to a prayer meeting
  • 00:23:48.140 --> 00:23:51.000
  • and you can't show other men who've been changed
  • 00:23:51.010 --> 00:23:54.050
  • 'cause you got your praise on, and you were not ashamed
  • 00:23:54.060 --> 00:23:57.020
  • to be identified with Jesus Christ,
  • 00:23:57.030 --> 00:23:59.180
  • then you have missed the purpose of the miracle.
  • 00:23:59.190 --> 00:24:02.270
  • He wants to give you a miracle, but he wants to give you
  • 00:24:02.280 --> 00:24:05.190
  • a miracle for a purpose.
  • 00:24:05.200 --> 00:24:07.110
  • If you're 40 years old, it's not too late,
  • 00:24:07.120 --> 00:24:10.120
  • 'cause God can meet you in the middle of life
  • 00:24:10.130 --> 00:24:13.030
  • and turn the rest of your life around.
  • 00:24:13.040 --> 00:24:15.140
  • The good news is that your background from Nazareth
  • 00:24:15.150 --> 00:24:19.070
  • no longer has to be the definition of your manhood,
  • 00:24:19.080 --> 00:24:23.040
  • 'cause God can meet folk in a Nazareth history
  • 00:24:23.050 --> 00:24:26.140
  • because he came out of a Nazareth background,
  • 00:24:26.150 --> 00:24:29.100
  • and he can still change your life for the better.
  • 00:24:29.110 --> 00:24:32.090
  • The good news today is, even if you've never won
  • 00:24:32.100 --> 00:24:35.100
  • anybody to Christ, God can use you
  • 00:24:35.110 --> 00:24:37.140
  • to help winning 5.000 more to Christ if you just
  • 00:24:37.150 --> 00:24:40.220
  • get your praise on and stop being ashamed to name
  • 00:24:40.230 --> 00:24:44.080
  • the name of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:24:44.090 --> 00:24:46.170
  • Come on, somebody, there ought to be a man here
  • 00:24:46.180 --> 00:24:49.250
  • who's willing to give testimony that I have committed my life
  • 00:24:49.260 --> 00:24:53.250
  • to Christ, I follow Christ, and I'm getting rid
  • 00:24:53.260 --> 00:24:56.290
  • of my lameness starting today.
  • 00:24:57.000 --> 00:24:59.090
  • 00:24:59.100 --> 00:25:09.110
  • 00:25:09.120 --> 00:25:11.090
  • Tony: A lot of people struggle to stand on their own two feet.
  • 00:25:11.100 --> 00:25:14.140
  • Life circumstances, whether emotional, or physical,
  • 00:25:14.150 --> 00:25:18.170
  • or financial, they either can't get up and get going,
  • 00:25:18.180 --> 00:25:23.210
  • or they keep getting knocked back down
  • 00:25:23.220 --> 00:25:25.190
  • when they try to get up.
  • 00:25:25.200 --> 00:25:27.210
  • And even when they look for help,
  • 00:25:27.220 --> 00:25:29.130
  • the help is not helpful.
  • 00:25:29.140 --> 00:25:31.270
  • And so, they spend day after day,
  • 00:25:31.280 --> 00:25:33.150
  • month after month, and year after year
  • 00:25:33.160 --> 00:25:36.110
  • just trying to make it, hoping to get by.
  • 00:25:36.120 --> 00:25:41.220
  • Well, God wants a lot more for your life and my life
  • 00:25:41.230 --> 00:25:45.070
  • than lameness, than just existing.
  • 00:25:45.080 --> 00:25:50.270
  • He wants us to experience an abundant life,
  • 00:25:50.280 --> 00:25:55.110
  • a life full of his eternal reality
  • 00:25:55.120 --> 00:25:59.250
  • pulsating through our spiritual veins.
  • 00:25:59.260 --> 00:26:04.030
  • It is absolutely critical that you are in the right place
  • 00:26:04.040 --> 00:26:07.160
  • at the right time so that God can use the right influencers
  • 00:26:07.170 --> 00:26:12.240
  • to stand you up, strengthen you up,
  • 00:26:12.250 --> 00:26:16.100
  • and give you a fresh reason to praise him.
  • 00:26:16.110 --> 00:26:19.030
  • And when you've positioned yourself under the authority
  • 00:26:19.040 --> 00:26:22.200
  • of Jesus Christ so that he can lift you up
  • 00:26:22.210 --> 00:26:24.230
  • out of the thing that's held you down,
  • 00:26:24.240 --> 00:26:26.250
  • you'll have a reason to shout and praise him
  • 00:26:26.260 --> 00:26:29.180
  • because you will have discovered what God can do
  • 00:26:29.190 --> 00:26:32.230
  • in taking whatever has kept you down, overriding it,
  • 00:26:32.240 --> 00:26:37.140
  • and lifting you back up.
  • 00:26:37.150 --> 00:26:39.140
  • 00:26:39.150 --> 00:26:49.150
  • 00:26:49.180 --> 00:26:59.140
  • 00:26:59.150 --> 00:27:09.170
  • 00:27:09.250 --> 00:27:19.250
  • 00:27:20.000 --> 00:27:26.150
