  • Darkness can be the incubator
  • 00:00:03.050 --> 00:00:05.080
  • in the atmosphere of new life.
  • 00:00:05.080 --> 00:00:08.000
  • (upbeat music)
  • 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:10.150
  • Hi, I'm Father Cedric Pisegna,
  • 00:00:35.070 --> 00:00:36.150
  • the host of Live with Passion.
  • 00:00:36.150 --> 00:00:38.040
  • I am so glad that you tuned into the program
  • 00:00:38.040 --> 00:00:40.040
  • because I'm gonna be talking
  • 00:00:40.040 --> 00:00:41.060
  • about light out of darkness.
  • 00:00:41.060 --> 00:00:43.220
  • Let me proclaim to you the Gospel of John 12.
  • 00:00:43.220 --> 00:00:47.230
  • And those who went to the feast were some Greeks.
  • 00:00:49.060 --> 00:00:52.190
  • They came to Philip and he went to his brother,
  • 00:00:52.190 --> 00:00:56.020
  • Andrew, and together they told Jesus.
  • 00:00:56.020 --> 00:00:59.220
  • Jesus answered them, "The hour has come
  • 00:00:59.220 --> 00:01:01.270
  • "for the Son of Man to be glorified.
  • 00:01:01.270 --> 00:01:04.120
  • "Truly, truly, I tell you,
  • 00:01:04.120 --> 00:01:06.140
  • "unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies,
  • 00:01:06.140 --> 00:01:11.040
  • "it just remains a grain of wheat;
  • 00:01:11.040 --> 00:01:12.200
  • "but if it dies, it bears much fruit."
  • 00:01:12.200 --> 00:01:16.220
  • The Gospel of the Lord.
  • 00:01:16.220 --> 00:01:17.280
  • Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 00:01:17.280 --> 00:01:20.010
  • So, Greeks came to the feast
  • 00:01:21.110 --> 00:01:24.070
  • and they wanted to see Jesus.
  • 00:01:24.070 --> 00:01:26.080
  • What is this talking about?
  • 00:01:26.080 --> 00:01:28.040
  • What, who are the Greeks?
  • 00:01:28.040 --> 00:01:29.240
  • Of course, Greeks were the philosophers.
  • 00:01:29.240 --> 00:01:34.000
  • And we all know that.
  • 00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:34.280
  • I studied philosophy in college
  • 00:01:34.280 --> 00:01:37.070
  • as a preparation for priesthood.
  • 00:01:37.070 --> 00:01:39.110
  • And I love the study of philosophy.
  • 00:01:39.110 --> 00:01:42.080
  • I studied all kinds of different disciplines.
  • 00:01:42.080 --> 00:01:44.150
  • For example, the Sophists,
  • 00:01:44.150 --> 00:01:47.080
  • and the Cynics, the Epicureans, the Stoics.
  • 00:01:47.080 --> 00:01:49.200
  • I studied Aristotle and Plato,
  • 00:01:50.190 --> 00:01:53.070
  • and Socrates and Pythagoras.
  • 00:01:53.070 --> 00:01:56.010
  • And what were the Greeks doing?
  • 00:01:56.010 --> 00:01:57.270
  • They were coming to Jesus wanting a philosophy.
  • 00:01:57.270 --> 00:02:01.110
  • And I remember studying philosophy.
  • 00:02:02.150 --> 00:02:04.030
  • I learned all these different ideas,
  • 00:02:04.030 --> 00:02:06.100
  • and all these different notions,
  • 00:02:06.100 --> 00:02:07.280
  • and all these different opinions,
  • 00:02:07.280 --> 00:02:10.010
  • all these different philosophies.
  • 00:02:10.010 --> 00:02:12.140
  • And in my philosophy class, this was
  • 00:02:12.140 --> 00:02:14.150
  • at the Southern Illinois University of Carbondale,
  • 00:02:14.150 --> 00:02:17.120
  • where I studied philosophy, again,
  • 00:02:17.120 --> 00:02:19.120
  • as a preparation for priesthood.
  • 00:02:19.120 --> 00:02:21.010
  • It really intrigued me.
  • 00:02:21.010 --> 00:02:22.090
  • I loved all these different ideas,
  • 00:02:22.090 --> 00:02:24.140
  • some better than others,
  • 00:02:24.140 --> 00:02:26.020
  • and I remember we had a class project.
  • 00:02:26.020 --> 00:02:28.220
  • Everybody had to study the philosophers
  • 00:02:28.220 --> 00:02:31.180
  • and come up with some type of a project
  • 00:02:31.180 --> 00:02:33.130
  • that they wanted to create.
  • 00:02:33.130 --> 00:02:35.090
  • And my particular project was I decided
  • 00:02:35.090 --> 00:02:37.290
  • to create a sundial.
  • 00:02:37.290 --> 00:02:39.190
  • As you may not know, sundials came
  • 00:02:40.220 --> 00:02:42.260
  • from the philosophers, the Greeks, the Egyptians,
  • 00:02:42.260 --> 00:02:46.020
  • way back when.
  • 00:02:46.020 --> 00:02:47.240
  • And so, I had to do it from scratch.
  • 00:02:47.240 --> 00:02:50.100
  • I had to learn about how the latitude
  • 00:02:50.100 --> 00:02:53.190
  • of where you are determines how you make the gnomon
  • 00:02:53.190 --> 00:02:56.270
  • so that the sun can shine on it.
  • 00:02:56.270 --> 00:02:59.240
  • And so, I created this sundial
  • 00:02:59.240 --> 00:03:02.090
  • and I put some things, sundials usually have a saying
  • 00:03:02.090 --> 00:03:04.290
  • or a slogan, and I put: Let there be light.
  • 00:03:04.290 --> 00:03:09.280
  • Believe in the light.
  • 00:03:11.050 --> 00:03:12.120
  • And I think that's significant as you watch this program.
  • 00:03:13.270 --> 00:03:17.060
  • No matter what time it is in your life,
  • 00:03:17.060 --> 00:03:20.010
  • and we all go through different seasons,
  • 00:03:20.010 --> 00:03:22.210
  • let there be light,
  • 00:03:22.210 --> 00:03:24.200
  • especially if you're going through a time of darkness,
  • 00:03:24.200 --> 00:03:28.100
  • because out of darkness can come great light.
  • 00:03:28.100 --> 00:03:32.150
  • That's what God did.
  • 00:03:32.150 --> 00:03:34.020
  • Out of the darkness and the chaos
  • 00:03:34.020 --> 00:03:36.130
  • he said, "Let there be light."
  • 00:03:36.130 --> 00:03:38.150
  • And I want to speak that into your heart, right now.
  • 00:03:38.150 --> 00:03:41.180
  • Let there be light.
  • 00:03:41.180 --> 00:03:43.130
  • There's a saying that says,
  • 00:03:43.130 --> 00:03:45.030
  • right before dawn, there can be the greatest darkness.
  • 00:03:45.030 --> 00:03:49.220
  • So, expect a dawn in your life
  • 00:03:49.220 --> 00:03:52.240
  • because if you're going through a darkness,
  • 00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:55.220
  • a light is about to occur.
  • 00:03:55.220 --> 00:03:57.260
  • So, the Greeks came to Jesus and they said,
  • 00:03:57.260 --> 00:04:00.050
  • Jesus give us a philosophy.
  • 00:04:00.050 --> 00:04:03.040
  • We've studied Aristotle and Plato,
  • 00:04:03.040 --> 00:04:05.220
  • and all these others.
  • 00:04:05.220 --> 00:04:07.010
  • We're looking for something that works.
  • 00:04:07.010 --> 00:04:08.160
  • You know what philosophers do.
  • 00:04:08.160 --> 00:04:10.100
  • They ask questions.
  • 00:04:10.100 --> 00:04:11.100
  • What is reality?
  • 00:04:11.100 --> 00:04:12.170
  • What's the meaning of life?
  • 00:04:13.130 --> 00:04:15.160
  • How can I be happy?
  • 00:04:15.160 --> 00:04:16.220
  • This is what's happening now.
  • 00:04:16.220 --> 00:04:18.160
  • These Greek people are coming to Jesus;
  • 00:04:18.160 --> 00:04:20.120
  • We want to see Jesus.
  • 00:04:20.120 --> 00:04:22.220
  • And so, Jesus did, he gave them a philosophy.
  • 00:04:22.220 --> 00:04:25.000
  • It was a brand new philosophy,
  • 00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:26.120
  • one I'm sure that they've never heard
  • 00:04:26.120 --> 00:04:28.020
  • and one that you've heard that maybe you don't know about.
  • 00:04:28.020 --> 00:04:31.090
  • And the philosophy was mind-blowing and earth-shaking,
  • 00:04:31.090 --> 00:04:34.160
  • and they probably thought, what is this?
  • 00:04:34.160 --> 00:04:36.260
  • What is he saying?
  • 00:04:36.260 --> 00:04:38.180
  • When they asked Jesus for a philosophy,
  • 00:04:38.180 --> 00:04:41.020
  • he said, get this now,
  • 00:04:41.020 --> 00:04:43.000
  • I know you've heard it,
  • 00:04:43.000 --> 00:04:44.140
  • unless a grain of wheat fall into the ground and die,
  • 00:04:44.140 --> 00:04:47.150
  • unless it dies, it just remains a grain of wheat.
  • 00:04:48.280 --> 00:04:53.110
  • But if it dies, it bears much fruit.
  • 00:04:53.110 --> 00:04:58.110
  • Wow.
  • 00:04:58.250 --> 00:05:00.020
  • I have studied philosophy (laughs)
  • 00:05:01.050 --> 00:05:03.210
  • and I've never heard anything like that before.
  • 00:05:03.210 --> 00:05:06.120
  • I mean, I've heard about how you can be happy
  • 00:05:06.120 --> 00:05:08.140
  • from Aristotle and Plato, and his transcendence,
  • 00:05:08.140 --> 00:05:11.250
  • and all these different type of things,
  • 00:05:11.250 --> 00:05:13.120
  • but I've never heard about dying in darkness
  • 00:05:13.120 --> 00:05:15.210
  • leading to new life.
  • 00:05:15.210 --> 00:05:17.050
  • That's exactly, really, we call that
  • 00:05:17.050 --> 00:05:19.120
  • the Pascal Mystery in Catholicism,
  • 00:05:19.120 --> 00:05:21.060
  • and that's exactly what Jesus was pronouncing.
  • 00:05:21.060 --> 00:05:23.140
  • They came, they wanted to know,
  • 00:05:23.140 --> 00:05:24.240
  • they wanted a new philosophy,
  • 00:05:24.240 --> 00:05:26.120
  • and they got somethin' more than they could handle.
  • 00:05:26.120 --> 00:05:28.250
  • The light out of darkness.
  • 00:05:29.210 --> 00:05:31.140
  • Life out of death.
  • 00:05:31.140 --> 00:05:33.100
  • So, let me explain that to you
  • 00:05:33.100 --> 00:05:34.160
  • because, especially if you're going
  • 00:05:34.160 --> 00:05:36.270
  • through a season of darkness
  • 00:05:36.270 --> 00:05:38.060
  • in your life, right now, I want you to know
  • 00:05:38.060 --> 00:05:39.240
  • that light is on the way.
  • 00:05:39.240 --> 00:05:41.280
  • A new season is coming.
  • 00:05:41.280 --> 00:05:43.170
  • And even if you aren't going through darkness,
  • 00:05:43.170 --> 00:05:46.010
  • we all do it, different seasons in our life
  • 00:05:46.010 --> 00:05:48.140
  • and you need to believe.
  • 00:05:48.140 --> 00:05:49.140
  • You see, this series is called:
  • 00:05:49.140 --> 00:05:52.250
  • A Different Spirit.
  • 00:05:52.250 --> 00:05:54.160
  • And what that means is,
  • 00:05:55.120 --> 00:05:56.260
  • as Christians, we aren't like the rest of the world.
  • 00:05:56.260 --> 00:06:00.080
  • When we encounter darkness, we believe
  • 00:06:00.080 --> 00:06:03.170
  • that there's something more.
  • 00:06:03.170 --> 00:06:05.080
  • When we encounter death of a loved one,
  • 00:06:05.080 --> 00:06:07.040
  • or even in our own life, the deaths that come,
  • 00:06:07.040 --> 00:06:09.190
  • we believe that there's gonna be resurrection
  • 00:06:09.190 --> 00:06:11.140
  • and new life.
  • 00:06:11.140 --> 00:06:12.210
  • Now, the world, they see darkness and they say,
  • 00:06:12.210 --> 00:06:14.280
  • that's it, I'm stuck in it.
  • 00:06:14.280 --> 00:06:16.200
  • They see death, they say, that's it,
  • 00:06:16.200 --> 00:06:18.090
  • there's nothing more.
  • 00:06:18.090 --> 00:06:19.130
  • But we have a different spirit.
  • 00:06:19.130 --> 00:06:22.130
  • That's what the Bible tells us
  • 00:06:22.130 --> 00:06:23.200
  • about Caleb; he was of a different spirit.
  • 00:06:23.200 --> 00:06:26.260
  • He was entering the Promise Land
  • 00:06:26.260 --> 00:06:29.090
  • because he had a different attitude
  • 00:06:29.090 --> 00:06:30.290
  • than all the rest.
  • 00:06:30.290 --> 00:06:32.130
  • All the rest saw giants, but he saw opportunity.
  • 00:06:32.130 --> 00:06:36.250
  • He said, "We are well able."
  • 00:06:37.290 --> 00:06:39.190
  • So, when I lived in California, at the retreat center
  • 00:06:40.280 --> 00:06:44.080
  • in Sacramento, I used to go down to Sequoia National Park,
  • 00:06:44.080 --> 00:06:47.030
  • down by Fresno area, south of Sacramento.
  • 00:06:47.030 --> 00:06:50.020
  • And I saw the largest living tree on earth,
  • 00:06:50.020 --> 00:06:53.070
  • it's called The General Sherman Tree.
  • 00:06:53.070 --> 00:06:55.120
  • Get this, 25 hundred years old,
  • 00:06:55.120 --> 00:06:57.260
  • that's from before Christ,
  • 00:06:57.260 --> 00:06:59.290
  • 275 feet high, and it weighs four million pounds.
  • 00:06:59.290 --> 00:07:05.010
  • So, there's this huge, largest living tree on earth.
  • 00:07:07.030 --> 00:07:11.110
  • It all started with a little teeny, itsy bitsy seed
  • 00:07:11.110 --> 00:07:15.280
  • that was planted in darkness.
  • 00:07:15.280 --> 00:07:18.280
  • There was a death,
  • 00:07:18.280 --> 00:07:20.220
  • the death of a seed,
  • 00:07:20.220 --> 00:07:22.100
  • and its new life sprouted up,
  • 00:07:22.100 --> 00:07:24.270
  • and then this explosive growth
  • 00:07:24.270 --> 00:07:27.150
  • into this huge General Sherman Tree,
  • 00:07:27.150 --> 00:07:30.190
  • which, now, people visit.
  • 00:07:30.190 --> 00:07:32.230
  • And so, I believe that it's in the pressure
  • 00:07:32.230 --> 00:07:37.100
  • and in the darkness, this is a parable
  • 00:07:37.100 --> 00:07:39.280
  • from creation itself.
  • 00:07:39.280 --> 00:07:42.000
  • In the darkness and in the pressure where we're planted,
  • 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:45.260
  • we can explode into new growth
  • 00:07:45.260 --> 00:07:49.050
  • and have fruit in our life.
  • 00:07:49.050 --> 00:07:51.210
  • That's exactly what Jesus was talking about
  • 00:07:51.210 --> 00:07:53.240
  • when he talked about a death has to occur.
  • 00:07:53.240 --> 00:07:57.040
  • Unless a grain of wheat falls
  • 00:07:57.040 --> 00:07:58.150
  • in the ground and dies, it just remains alone,
  • 00:07:58.150 --> 00:08:00.280
  • but if it dies, it bears fruit.
  • 00:08:00.280 --> 00:08:04.050
  • And God wants fruit from us.
  • 00:08:04.050 --> 00:08:07.100
  • You have to understand that.
  • 00:08:07.100 --> 00:08:08.200
  • The first commandment in the Bible is:
  • 00:08:08.200 --> 00:08:10.190
  • Be fruitful and multiply.
  • 00:08:10.190 --> 00:08:12.150
  • And the fruit that God wants is
  • 00:08:12.150 --> 00:08:14.090
  • he wants a deep relationship with us,
  • 00:08:14.090 --> 00:08:16.020
  • he wants us to grow, and he wants us
  • 00:08:16.020 --> 00:08:18.280
  • to realize our potential, to live with passion.
  • 00:08:18.280 --> 00:08:21.090
  • So, if you are going through an addiction,
  • 00:08:21.090 --> 00:08:23.230
  • right now, if you have gone into some type
  • 00:08:23.230 --> 00:08:26.240
  • of a grieving because you've lost somebody
  • 00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:28.240
  • that you love,
  • 00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:30.040
  • if you are struggling with a relationship,
  • 00:08:30.040 --> 00:08:33.120
  • if you're dealing with physical pain
  • 00:08:33.120 --> 00:08:35.230
  • and physical disease,
  • 00:08:35.230 --> 00:08:38.010
  • all the deaths and the darknesses
  • 00:08:38.010 --> 00:08:41.000
  • and the hardships of life,
  • 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:42.170
  • I want you to know that that can be the incubator
  • 00:08:42.170 --> 00:08:45.180
  • of new life.
  • 00:08:45.180 --> 00:08:47.240
  • See, we have a different spirit.
  • 00:08:47.240 --> 00:08:49.130
  • We don't just look at the exterior.
  • 00:08:49.130 --> 00:08:51.050
  • Just like God, we don't just look at the outside,
  • 00:08:51.050 --> 00:08:54.060
  • we look at the heart.
  • 00:08:54.060 --> 00:08:55.070
  • And it's the same way in our life.
  • 00:08:56.150 --> 00:08:57.220
  • We have to look deeper than just circumstances.
  • 00:08:57.220 --> 00:09:01.240
  • Circumstances can lead to more.
  • 00:09:01.240 --> 00:09:04.180
  • Darkness can lead to light.
  • 00:09:04.180 --> 00:09:05.290
  • We have a different spirit, as believers.
  • 00:09:05.290 --> 00:09:09.170
  • So, I want you to know that
  • 00:09:09.170 --> 00:09:11.170
  • whatever you're going through,
  • 00:09:11.170 --> 00:09:12.210
  • it can be the incubator of new life.
  • 00:09:12.210 --> 00:09:14.260
  • For example, your existence came from darkness.
  • 00:09:14.260 --> 00:09:19.260
  • What do I mean by that?
  • 00:09:21.170 --> 00:09:22.220
  • Sperm in the egg, fertilized, growth.
  • 00:09:23.270 --> 00:09:28.230
  • You developed in your mother's womb,
  • 00:09:29.290 --> 00:09:32.080
  • in the darkness,
  • 00:09:32.080 --> 00:09:33.200
  • and then, you came to be.
  • 00:09:34.160 --> 00:09:36.130
  • That's a parable for life itself.
  • 00:09:36.130 --> 00:09:39.020
  • In darkness, that's the incubator of new life.
  • 00:09:39.020 --> 00:09:44.020
  • So, if there's a dark moment in your life,
  • 00:09:45.270 --> 00:09:47.210
  • right now, realize that you're just doing
  • 00:09:47.210 --> 00:09:50.070
  • what happened in the beginning of your life anyway.
  • 00:09:50.070 --> 00:09:53.070
  • You grew from darkness.
  • 00:09:53.070 --> 00:09:54.290
  • You matured.
  • 00:09:54.290 --> 00:09:56.230
  • And notice, sometimes it takes time.
  • 00:09:56.230 --> 00:10:00.110
  • When we're in a dark time,
  • 00:10:00.110 --> 00:10:02.220
  • like an addiction, or something else, grieving,
  • 00:10:02.220 --> 00:10:05.180
  • we want it to be over with now (laughs).
  • 00:10:05.180 --> 00:10:07.170
  • It's like, get rid of this.
  • 00:10:08.230 --> 00:10:10.260
  • I can't stand this.
  • 00:10:10.260 --> 00:10:12.270
  • Don't you hear my prayer?
  • 00:10:12.270 --> 00:10:14.220
  • Yes, God hears your prayer.
  • 00:10:14.220 --> 00:10:16.280
  • But notice the gestation period
  • 00:10:16.280 --> 00:10:19.030
  • in a mother's womb is nine months.
  • 00:10:19.030 --> 00:10:21.260
  • It takes time to develop and to grow.
  • 00:10:21.260 --> 00:10:25.120
  • So, don't lose patience.
  • 00:10:25.120 --> 00:10:27.280
  • Realize that sometimes it takes a little time.
  • 00:10:27.280 --> 00:10:30.230
  • That's a song by Amy Grant.
  • 00:10:30.230 --> 00:10:33.120
  • Sometimes things take time.
  • 00:10:33.120 --> 00:10:36.100
  • But don't give up; be patient.
  • 00:10:36.100 --> 00:10:38.060
  • So, let me talk about a few other things.
  • 00:10:38.060 --> 00:10:40.080
  • I think about the composer, Beethoven.
  • 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:47.000
  • I read about his life.
  • 00:10:48.070 --> 00:10:50.100
  • Arguably the greatest composer that ever lived.
  • 00:10:50.100 --> 00:10:53.250
  • But at 26 years old, just as a young man,
  • 00:10:53.250 --> 00:10:58.090
  • here's this pianist, this great composer,
  • 00:10:58.090 --> 00:11:01.110
  • composing symphonies, he began to lose his hearing.
  • 00:11:01.110 --> 00:11:04.290
  • You know what a hearing is to a musician?
  • 00:11:04.290 --> 00:11:07.060
  • It's like a voice to a preacher.
  • 00:11:07.060 --> 00:11:08.270
  • It's devastating.
  • 00:11:09.270 --> 00:11:10.210
  • He was devastated.
  • 00:11:10.210 --> 00:11:12.060
  • Talk about a dark time, the darkness of deafness.
  • 00:11:12.060 --> 00:11:15.060
  • He contemplated suicide,
  • 00:11:16.200 --> 00:11:18.180
  • that's how devastating that was to Beethoven.
  • 00:11:19.240 --> 00:11:22.040
  • But then, he realized
  • 00:11:23.130 --> 00:11:25.280
  • that he had a different spirit.
  • 00:11:27.280 --> 00:11:29.080
  • God had put a gift in him.
  • 00:11:29.080 --> 00:11:31.260
  • And being negative wasn't gonna do anything.
  • 00:11:33.250 --> 00:11:37.120
  • So, he decided to be positive.
  • 00:11:37.120 --> 00:11:39.050
  • And he made a decision he was gonna
  • 00:11:40.070 --> 00:11:41.290
  • be determined to go forward.
  • 00:11:42.250 --> 00:11:45.030
  • And so, you know what he did?
  • 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:47.110
  • He composed arguably the greatest symphony,
  • 00:11:47.110 --> 00:11:51.080
  • it was his ninth symphony with the Ode to Joy,
  • 00:11:52.190 --> 00:11:56.040
  • while he was deaf; wow!
  • 00:11:56.040 --> 00:11:58.210
  • That's called light out of darkness.
  • 00:11:58.210 --> 00:12:01.060
  • Light out of deafness.
  • 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:03.190
  • Maybe you're not deaf,
  • 00:12:05.060 --> 00:12:06.150
  • but you're facing another adversity.
  • 00:12:06.150 --> 00:12:08.260
  • Well, don't contemplate suicide, certainly,
  • 00:12:08.260 --> 00:12:11.210
  • and don't give up and don't be negative.
  • 00:12:11.210 --> 00:12:14.150
  • God has put a gift in you.
  • 00:12:14.150 --> 00:12:15.210
  • You have a different spirit.
  • 00:12:15.210 --> 00:12:18.070
  • Allow this blessing to come forth,
  • 00:12:18.070 --> 00:12:21.050
  • like Beethoven.
  • 00:12:21.050 --> 00:12:22.210
  • The dark times, we can see new things.
  • 00:12:22.210 --> 00:12:25.230
  • And I've studied change.
  • 00:12:25.230 --> 00:12:27.090
  • I wrote a book called, You Can Change.
  • 00:12:27.090 --> 00:12:29.120
  • And I know, as a Catholic priest,
  • 00:12:30.110 --> 00:12:32.040
  • I've seen conversions, and talk about change,
  • 00:12:32.040 --> 00:12:35.260
  • and trying to help people to go forward.
  • 00:12:35.260 --> 00:12:38.280
  • The catalyst for conversion usually
  • 00:12:38.280 --> 00:12:42.150
  • is a dark period of some sort.
  • 00:12:42.150 --> 00:12:45.090
  • For example, the prodigal son.
  • 00:12:45.090 --> 00:12:47.050
  • We all know the story, I won't tell it now,
  • 00:12:47.050 --> 00:12:49.120
  • but the bottom line is, just a little snippet,
  • 00:12:49.120 --> 00:12:52.280
  • here's this young man who loses everything,
  • 00:12:52.280 --> 00:12:56.000
  • sloppin' with the pigs and the mud,
  • 00:12:56.000 --> 00:12:58.100
  • goin' through the hardest time of his life,
  • 00:12:58.100 --> 00:13:00.120
  • and he has an awakening, he comes to his senses.
  • 00:13:00.120 --> 00:13:04.110
  • In the twelve-step program, that's called an intervention,
  • 00:13:04.110 --> 00:13:08.110
  • where you quit denying what's going on
  • 00:13:08.110 --> 00:13:11.100
  • and you accept the fact that you have an addiction.
  • 00:13:11.100 --> 00:13:15.160
  • So, because of this bottoming-out experience
  • 00:13:15.160 --> 00:13:17.290
  • that this young man had,
  • 00:13:17.290 --> 00:13:19.040
  • he came to his father and was accepted
  • 00:13:19.040 --> 00:13:22.080
  • back into the family.
  • 00:13:22.080 --> 00:13:23.080
  • See, that's conversion.
  • 00:13:23.080 --> 00:13:24.220
  • Conversion doesn't usually happen when things are goin',
  • 00:13:24.220 --> 00:13:27.030
  • everything's okay, it usually happens
  • 00:13:27.030 --> 00:13:29.040
  • when there's a discomfort, a bottoming-out,
  • 00:13:29.040 --> 00:13:32.230
  • a darkness of some sort.
  • 00:13:32.230 --> 00:13:34.270
  • I went through a dark time in my life
  • 00:13:34.270 --> 00:13:36.250
  • when I was 18 years old,
  • 00:13:36.250 --> 00:13:39.140
  • and it was a breakup with a girl.
  • 00:13:39.140 --> 00:13:41.030
  • And after that breakup, never mind the pain,
  • 00:13:42.080 --> 00:13:44.190
  • and the grieving of the breakup,
  • 00:13:44.190 --> 00:13:46.120
  • I was so lonely.
  • 00:13:46.120 --> 00:13:47.200
  • I didn't have God in my life at that time
  • 00:13:48.260 --> 00:13:50.180
  • and I experienced what Billy Graham calls
  • 00:13:50.180 --> 00:13:53.200
  • a cosmic loneliness.
  • 00:13:53.200 --> 00:13:56.080
  • That's when you're lonely for God
  • 00:13:56.080 --> 00:13:57.190
  • but you don't even know it.
  • 00:13:57.190 --> 00:13:59.120
  • And you're lonely for others, and it hurts.
  • 00:13:59.120 --> 00:14:03.090
  • But in that darkness, in that hard time
  • 00:14:04.140 --> 00:14:07.110
  • that I went through, God's light flooded me.
  • 00:14:07.110 --> 00:14:11.110
  • That's when I came to a conversion.
  • 00:14:11.110 --> 00:14:12.230
  • It took time.
  • 00:14:12.230 --> 00:14:14.070
  • Remember what I said, it doesn't happen all at once,
  • 00:14:14.070 --> 00:14:15.280
  • there's a gestation period.
  • 00:14:15.280 --> 00:14:18.040
  • So, if you're goin' through a dark time in your life,
  • 00:14:18.040 --> 00:14:20.240
  • whether it be an addiction, a bottoming-out
  • 00:14:20.240 --> 00:14:22.210
  • of some sort, a breakup of some sort,
  • 00:14:22.210 --> 00:14:24.180
  • a divorce, a hardship, a grieving,
  • 00:14:24.180 --> 00:14:27.200
  • there's gonna be some time,
  • 00:14:27.200 --> 00:14:29.170
  • but in time, God knows exactly when.
  • 00:14:29.170 --> 00:14:32.260
  • I don't know if you've ever heard that saying,
  • 00:14:32.260 --> 00:14:34.240
  • when the student is ready, the teacher will come.
  • 00:14:34.240 --> 00:14:37.100
  • At the correct time, light will come flooding in for you.
  • 00:14:38.220 --> 00:14:41.180
  • Don't give up.
  • 00:14:41.180 --> 00:14:42.160
  • You have a different spirit.
  • 00:14:42.160 --> 00:14:45.160
  • See, the world encounters breakups,
  • 00:14:45.160 --> 00:14:48.000
  • and grieving, and darkness, and hardships,
  • 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:50.290
  • and they give up.
  • 00:14:50.290 --> 00:14:52.110
  • They say there's no meaning to this.
  • 00:14:52.110 --> 00:14:54.090
  • But not us.
  • 00:14:54.090 --> 00:14:55.240
  • We have a different spirit.
  • 00:14:55.240 --> 00:14:57.000
  • There is purpose, and there is meaning.
  • 00:14:57.000 --> 00:15:00.230
  • And because of that, we can definitely grow.
  • 00:15:00.230 --> 00:15:03.130
  • A light out of darkness.
  • 00:15:03.130 --> 00:15:05.170
  • So, I believe that there's probably something very good
  • 00:15:05.170 --> 00:15:08.270
  • in your future.
  • 00:15:08.270 --> 00:15:10.090
  • Not probably, there is something good in your future.
  • 00:15:10.090 --> 00:15:12.220
  • Light out of darkness.
  • 00:15:12.220 --> 00:15:14.000
  • And I've studied the twelve-step program.
  • 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:17.140
  • I did a four-part series on addictions.
  • 00:15:17.140 --> 00:15:21.180
  • You can find it on my website.
  • 00:15:21.180 --> 00:15:23.070
  • And during that study,
  • 00:15:24.040 --> 00:15:26.160
  • I found that there are thousands,
  • 00:15:26.160 --> 00:15:30.040
  • if not millions of people,
  • 00:15:30.040 --> 00:15:32.030
  • who had gone through dark, bottoming-out periods
  • 00:15:32.030 --> 00:15:35.230
  • in their life, who came to a relationship with God
  • 00:15:35.230 --> 00:15:40.130
  • and recovery from addictions,
  • 00:15:40.130 --> 00:15:44.010
  • through the darkness.
  • 00:15:44.010 --> 00:15:45.180
  • And it could happen for you, too.
  • 00:15:47.080 --> 00:15:48.160
  • Photographers, you know what they do,
  • 00:15:48.160 --> 00:15:51.060
  • they take pictures and they go to a darkroom.
  • 00:15:51.060 --> 00:15:54.080
  • And in the darkroom, what they do
  • 00:15:55.100 --> 00:15:56.220
  • is they have to have all the light taken out
  • 00:15:56.220 --> 00:15:59.240
  • because the light at the wrong time
  • 00:15:59.240 --> 00:16:02.250
  • will spoil the photo.
  • 00:16:02.250 --> 00:16:04.080
  • They have to go into the darkroom,
  • 00:16:04.080 --> 00:16:06.210
  • and they wash the negative in a chemical solution,
  • 00:16:06.210 --> 00:16:10.210
  • and they let it sit for awhile,
  • 00:16:10.210 --> 00:16:12.240
  • again, there's that thing, that gestation period,
  • 00:16:12.240 --> 00:16:15.210
  • don't give up when nothing's happening,
  • 00:16:15.210 --> 00:16:18.040
  • you're being developed in the darkness.
  • 00:16:18.040 --> 00:16:20.270
  • That's exactly what happens.
  • 00:16:20.270 --> 00:16:22.050
  • So, the beautiful wedding pictures,
  • 00:16:22.050 --> 00:16:25.060
  • and the pictures of creation,
  • 00:16:25.060 --> 00:16:27.260
  • and mountains, and sunsets,
  • 00:16:27.260 --> 00:16:30.280
  • and all different things,
  • 00:16:30.280 --> 00:16:32.030
  • those beautiful pictures that you see
  • 00:16:32.030 --> 00:16:34.110
  • from professional photographers
  • 00:16:34.110 --> 00:16:36.200
  • are developed in darkness.
  • 00:16:36.200 --> 00:16:38.250
  • Think about Saint Paul of the Cross.
  • 00:16:40.010 --> 00:16:41.190
  • He was the founder of our religious community.
  • 00:16:41.190 --> 00:16:44.010
  • I'm not only a Catholic priest, I'm a religious priest.
  • 00:16:44.010 --> 00:16:47.260
  • Franciscans you've heard of,
  • 00:16:47.260 --> 00:16:49.170
  • and Jesuits, Dominicans, Redemptorus,
  • 00:16:49.170 --> 00:16:54.170
  • I'm a Passionist, we have a dedication
  • 00:16:55.220 --> 00:16:57.070
  • to the cross of Christ, to the Passion of Christ.
  • 00:16:57.070 --> 00:17:00.060
  • And Saint Paul of the Cross lived in the 1700s,
  • 00:17:01.180 --> 00:17:03.290
  • wanted to found a religious community,
  • 00:17:03.290 --> 00:17:06.010
  • wanted to call it The Poor of Jesus,
  • 00:17:06.010 --> 00:17:08.140
  • went to the Pope Benedict, the 14th,
  • 00:17:08.140 --> 00:17:11.180
  • he went to the Vatican, wanted an audience with him.
  • 00:17:11.180 --> 00:17:14.000
  • Here he is, 19 years old, barefoot,
  • 00:17:14.000 --> 00:17:16.110
  • wearing this black robe,
  • 00:17:16.110 --> 00:17:18.110
  • shows up at the Vatican, wants an audience
  • 00:17:19.290 --> 00:17:21.290
  • with the pope, oh yeah.
  • 00:17:21.290 --> 00:17:23.200
  • They threw him out.
  • 00:17:23.200 --> 00:17:25.060
  • They thought he was a vagabond.
  • 00:17:25.060 --> 00:17:26.200
  • They thought he was a hobo.
  • 00:17:26.200 --> 00:17:28.020
  • They didn't know who he was.
  • 00:17:28.020 --> 00:17:29.090
  • You're not gonna get no audience with no pope.
  • 00:17:29.090 --> 00:17:31.250
  • Boom, out he went.
  • 00:17:31.250 --> 00:17:33.270
  • So, instead of giving into despair,
  • 00:17:33.270 --> 00:17:36.240
  • there's nothing worse than the darkness of rejection.
  • 00:17:36.240 --> 00:17:40.030
  • Instead of giving in to despair,
  • 00:17:40.030 --> 00:17:42.010
  • he turned to prayer.
  • 00:17:42.010 --> 00:17:43.040
  • Went to Saint Mary Major, one of the four major basilicas
  • 00:17:44.170 --> 00:17:47.040
  • in Rome and he prayed before a crucifix in a side chapel.
  • 00:17:47.040 --> 00:17:51.190
  • And it was there that he got the inkling,
  • 00:17:51.190 --> 00:17:53.270
  • the insight that God was calling him
  • 00:17:53.270 --> 00:17:56.150
  • to found a community, yes,
  • 00:17:56.150 --> 00:17:57.240
  • but not called The Poor of Jesus,
  • 00:17:57.240 --> 00:17:59.090
  • called The Passion of Jesus.
  • 00:17:59.090 --> 00:18:01.080
  • I'm wearing a sign on my heart
  • 00:18:01.080 --> 00:18:03.250
  • called The Passion of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:18:03.250 --> 00:18:07.010
  • That's what this means.
  • 00:18:07.010 --> 00:18:08.270
  • And so, he went back to the pope
  • 00:18:08.270 --> 00:18:10.120
  • about a month later,
  • 00:18:10.120 --> 00:18:12.070
  • miraculously got let in,
  • 00:18:12.070 --> 00:18:14.140
  • had an audience with the pope,
  • 00:18:14.140 --> 00:18:15.230
  • presented to him his idea
  • 00:18:15.230 --> 00:18:18.030
  • about finding a community to the Passion of Jesus,
  • 00:18:18.030 --> 00:18:20.140
  • the pope loved it.
  • 00:18:20.140 --> 00:18:21.150
  • And so, out of darkness came this explosive growth.
  • 00:18:23.020 --> 00:18:25.130
  • The Passionists are now in 64 countries,
  • 00:18:25.130 --> 00:18:28.240
  • we preach, we minister, we proclaim the Gospel,
  • 00:18:28.240 --> 00:18:33.210
  • the Christ crucified, and salvation in him.
  • 00:18:33.210 --> 00:18:38.010
  • And I want to tell any of you
  • 00:18:38.010 --> 00:18:39.060
  • who have been rejected by your parents,
  • 00:18:39.060 --> 00:18:40.170
  • or abused, or rejected by friends,
  • 00:18:40.170 --> 00:18:43.040
  • or betrayed, that out of that darkness,
  • 00:18:43.040 --> 00:18:45.200
  • something new, something explosive,
  • 00:18:45.200 --> 00:18:48.070
  • light can come out of darkness.
  • 00:18:48.070 --> 00:18:50.180
  • If you don't give up, remember,
  • 00:18:50.180 --> 00:18:51.270
  • we're not like the rest of the world,
  • 00:18:51.270 --> 00:18:54.150
  • we have a different spirit.
  • 00:18:54.150 --> 00:18:57.090
  • We're like Caleb, we are well able.
  • 00:18:57.090 --> 00:19:00.090
  • If God is for us, who can be against us.
  • 00:19:00.090 --> 00:19:03.050
  • So, then, I think about airplanes, for example.
  • 00:19:04.180 --> 00:19:08.070
  • We're talking about light out of darkness.
  • 00:19:08.070 --> 00:19:10.170
  • I noticed one time, I was on a long flight
  • 00:19:10.170 --> 00:19:12.290
  • to Italy, I believe it was.
  • 00:19:12.290 --> 00:19:16.170
  • And during a long flight, it's an overnight flight,
  • 00:19:16.170 --> 00:19:19.060
  • I looked at one of the passengers next to me
  • 00:19:19.060 --> 00:19:21.240
  • and they put on these blinders
  • 00:19:21.240 --> 00:19:24.070
  • to cover their eyes to help them go to sleep,
  • 00:19:24.070 --> 00:19:26.220
  • and in that darkness, in the darkness of sleep,
  • 00:19:26.220 --> 00:19:31.220
  • you may not know this, but it's important,
  • 00:19:32.270 --> 00:19:34.110
  • something called melatonin is developed.
  • 00:19:34.110 --> 00:19:38.140
  • Out of that darkness, melatonin helps us with memory.
  • 00:19:38.140 --> 00:19:42.030
  • We all need memory.
  • 00:19:42.030 --> 00:19:43.160
  • So, in other words, darkness can bring us something
  • 00:19:43.160 --> 00:19:46.160
  • that we need.
  • 00:19:46.160 --> 00:19:47.140
  • For all us, there are times in our life
  • 00:19:48.270 --> 00:19:50.280
  • when we actually need darkness.
  • 00:19:50.280 --> 00:19:54.020
  • You heard about the Dark Ages years ago,
  • 00:19:54.020 --> 00:19:57.240
  • our culture.
  • 00:19:57.240 --> 00:19:59.160
  • Well, that was a time of a lack of literature,
  • 00:19:59.160 --> 00:20:02.210
  • the culture wasn't developing very well,
  • 00:20:02.210 --> 00:20:04.290
  • there was religious struggles,
  • 00:20:04.290 --> 00:20:06.290
  • religious conflicts.
  • 00:20:06.290 --> 00:20:08.180
  • That was followed by the Renaissance,
  • 00:20:08.180 --> 00:20:11.030
  • and then, by the Enlightenment.
  • 00:20:11.030 --> 00:20:13.120
  • So, out of the darkness came something new,
  • 00:20:13.120 --> 00:20:17.070
  • enlightenment, light.
  • 00:20:17.070 --> 00:20:19.240
  • And artists like da Vinci, Michelangelo,
  • 00:20:19.240 --> 00:20:23.160
  • Saint Peter's Basilica, if you've ever seen it came to be.
  • 00:20:23.160 --> 00:20:26.190
  • Many of you like to drink wine,
  • 00:20:27.150 --> 00:20:29.220
  • well, you all know about wine.
  • 00:20:29.220 --> 00:20:31.180
  • Once it's formed and they put it into vats,
  • 00:20:31.180 --> 00:20:35.040
  • they put it into a cellar for a little while,
  • 00:20:35.040 --> 00:20:38.100
  • for a little while, for a gestation period
  • 00:20:38.100 --> 00:20:42.110
  • in order for it to mature.
  • 00:20:42.110 --> 00:20:45.050
  • And I remember that saying from that commercial,
  • 00:20:46.170 --> 00:20:49.090
  • we'll sell no wine before it's time.
  • 00:20:49.090 --> 00:20:51.190
  • The wine needs to be given time in the darkness
  • 00:20:53.020 --> 00:20:55.100
  • of the cellar, in the coolness of the cellar,
  • 00:20:55.100 --> 00:20:57.270
  • in order to develop and become mature and taste right.
  • 00:20:57.270 --> 00:21:02.020
  • And God's the same way.
  • 00:21:03.150 --> 00:21:04.260
  • He knows, he's a connoisseur, not only of wine,
  • 00:21:04.260 --> 00:21:07.270
  • but of hearts, and he will not get you
  • 00:21:07.270 --> 00:21:12.030
  • out of the darkness before your time,
  • 00:21:12.030 --> 00:21:15.020
  • that gestation period.
  • 00:21:15.020 --> 00:21:17.080
  • But when it's time, at the right moment,
  • 00:21:17.080 --> 00:21:19.260
  • and by the way, if light comes into that cellar
  • 00:21:19.260 --> 00:21:22.100
  • at the wrong moment, the wine will spoil,
  • 00:21:22.100 --> 00:21:25.180
  • same as the photographer.
  • 00:21:25.180 --> 00:21:28.050
  • At the right moment, the light will come for you.
  • 00:21:28.050 --> 00:21:31.160
  • You're in a gestation period, a season,
  • 00:21:31.160 --> 00:21:34.150
  • and you will change.
  • 00:21:34.150 --> 00:21:37.010
  • So, in my life, there's been breakups,
  • 00:21:37.010 --> 00:21:39.070
  • and bottoming-outs, and I've been in the cellar at times,
  • 00:21:39.070 --> 00:21:42.140
  • feeling like I've been just put on a shelf.
  • 00:21:42.140 --> 00:21:45.200
  • But I haven't lost hope.
  • 00:21:45.200 --> 00:21:47.020
  • I've stayed in trust, believing that God is working
  • 00:21:47.020 --> 00:21:49.050
  • and he has been at work.
  • 00:21:49.050 --> 00:21:51.050
  • And the light does come.
  • 00:21:51.050 --> 00:21:52.170
  • I love that song, There's Got To Be a Morning After.
  • 00:21:54.010 --> 00:21:56.070
  • It comes from the Poseidon Adventure.
  • 00:21:56.070 --> 00:21:58.110
  • That's one of my theme songs,
  • 00:21:58.110 --> 00:22:00.140
  • sung by Maureen McGovern, There's Got To Be a Morning After.
  • 00:22:00.140 --> 00:22:03.170
  • There's always hope no matter how your ship is flipped.
  • 00:22:03.170 --> 00:22:06.260
  • Then, in the Early Church, really quickly,
  • 00:22:08.000 --> 00:22:09.250
  • there was persecution.
  • 00:22:09.250 --> 00:22:11.280
  • And it almost died out.
  • 00:22:11.280 --> 00:22:14.030
  • They were being martyred.
  • 00:22:15.000 --> 00:22:16.070
  • They were being killed.
  • 00:22:16.070 --> 00:22:17.140
  • But if you read the Acts of the Apostles,
  • 00:22:18.190 --> 00:22:20.100
  • even though people were being put to death,
  • 00:22:20.100 --> 00:22:22.030
  • and jailed, and beaten, and suffering,
  • 00:22:22.030 --> 00:22:24.000
  • and this is what I learned in the seminary,
  • 00:22:24.000 --> 00:22:26.070
  • in the difficult dark days of the Early Church,
  • 00:22:26.070 --> 00:22:29.060
  • that's what led to their explosive growth.
  • 00:22:29.060 --> 00:22:31.140
  • I don't know if you've ever seen a dandelion's seed,
  • 00:22:31.140 --> 00:22:34.130
  • (blowing air) when they blow it and seeds go everywhere.
  • 00:22:34.130 --> 00:22:37.230
  • That's kind of what it was like in the Early Church.
  • 00:22:37.230 --> 00:22:39.280
  • They tried to, they being the people, the unbelievers,
  • 00:22:39.280 --> 00:22:44.070
  • the evil, at that time, tried to squash the Church,
  • 00:22:44.070 --> 00:22:48.000
  • but actually, what happened was it led to its growth.
  • 00:22:48.000 --> 00:22:51.040
  • That's why Tertullian said that the martyrs
  • 00:22:51.040 --> 00:22:55.000
  • are the seed of the new church.
  • 00:22:55.000 --> 00:22:57.230
  • And so, out of darkness, the Church spread and grew.
  • 00:22:57.230 --> 00:23:02.250
  • So, I've given you numerous examples, here,
  • 00:23:03.280 --> 00:23:05.050
  • trying to convince you, to persuade you,
  • 00:23:05.050 --> 00:23:08.160
  • that darkness isn't necessarily a bad thing in life.
  • 00:23:08.160 --> 00:23:12.240
  • And because we are of a different spirit,
  • 00:23:12.240 --> 00:23:15.240
  • because we're believers, just because we encounter darkness
  • 00:23:15.240 --> 00:23:19.180
  • doesn't mean that it's all over.
  • 00:23:19.180 --> 00:23:21.290
  • And I've talked to you about the Early Church
  • 00:23:21.290 --> 00:23:24.020
  • and how it spread.
  • 00:23:24.020 --> 00:23:25.210
  • Beethoven and his deafness.
  • 00:23:25.210 --> 00:23:28.000
  • Saint Paul of the Cross and his rejection.
  • 00:23:28.000 --> 00:23:30.230
  • Me in a breakup with a girl and loneliness.
  • 00:23:30.230 --> 00:23:33.220
  • Babies and how we develop in darkness.
  • 00:23:33.220 --> 00:23:36.080
  • Wine and how it's put in a cellar.
  • 00:23:36.080 --> 00:23:38.130
  • Photos and how they develop.
  • 00:23:38.130 --> 00:23:40.120
  • The Dark Ages and how it turned into the Enlightenment.
  • 00:23:40.120 --> 00:23:43.270
  • Seeds that die and become new life.
  • 00:23:43.270 --> 00:23:46.090
  • Greeks came to Jesus and they said,
  • 00:23:46.090 --> 00:23:49.040
  • we've heard you're a great teacher,
  • 00:23:49.040 --> 00:23:51.040
  • give us a new philosophy.
  • 00:23:51.040 --> 00:23:53.260
  • We've heard about Plato, and Socrates,
  • 00:23:53.260 --> 00:23:56.240
  • and Aristotle, and Pythagoras, and all the rest.
  • 00:23:56.240 --> 00:23:59.160
  • We want something new.
  • 00:23:59.160 --> 00:24:00.190
  • We want something that works.
  • 00:24:00.190 --> 00:24:01.270
  • What's the meaning of life?
  • 00:24:01.270 --> 00:24:03.020
  • And Jesus gave them something,
  • 00:24:03.020 --> 00:24:04.230
  • and I hope you get this,
  • 00:24:04.230 --> 00:24:06.080
  • something so mind-blowing,
  • 00:24:06.080 --> 00:24:07.180
  • something so earth-shattering:
  • 00:24:07.180 --> 00:24:09.220
  • Unless a seed fall into the ground and die,
  • 00:24:09.220 --> 00:24:12.130
  • it just remains a grain of wheat.
  • 00:24:13.180 --> 00:24:15.030
  • But if it dies, it bears fruit.
  • 00:24:15.030 --> 00:24:18.150
  • And I want you to know that in your darkness,
  • 00:24:18.150 --> 00:24:21.040
  • and in your death, you can grow and explode
  • 00:24:21.040 --> 00:24:26.040
  • like the mighty sequoia.
  • 00:24:26.260 --> 00:24:28.240
  • Don't just live; live with passion.
  • 00:24:28.240 --> 00:24:31.000
  • (gentle music)
  • 00:24:31.250 --> 00:24:34.130
  • I want you to believe that light can come
  • 00:24:35.200 --> 00:24:37.220
  • out of any darkness.
  • 00:24:37.220 --> 00:24:39.000
  • I got a letter from a man who is in prison,
  • 00:24:39.000 --> 00:24:42.120
  • and that can be a dark place,
  • 00:24:42.120 --> 00:24:44.000
  • but it can also be a positive place
  • 00:24:44.000 --> 00:24:45.240
  • where rehabilitation can occur
  • 00:24:45.240 --> 00:24:47.260
  • and great things can occur.
  • 00:24:47.260 --> 00:24:49.180
  • But basically, what he said is this,
  • 00:24:49.180 --> 00:24:51.010
  • he said, "What started as an attempt just
  • 00:24:51.010 --> 00:24:52.260
  • "to fill my time in prison
  • 00:24:52.260 --> 00:24:54.130
  • "has become an education for me.
  • 00:24:54.130 --> 00:24:57.050
  • "I'm now in a Bible college
  • 00:24:57.050 --> 00:24:59.170
  • "and I believe I've found God's calling for my life."
  • 00:24:59.170 --> 00:25:02.200
  • Wow.
  • 00:25:02.200 --> 00:25:04.040
  • It wasn't just Joseph in prison that God moved in his life.
  • 00:25:04.040 --> 00:25:07.240
  • God moved in this man's life, also.
  • 00:25:07.240 --> 00:25:10.130
  • And I'm believing that out of any darkness,
  • 00:25:10.130 --> 00:25:12.080
  • whether it be prison or a darkness of a breakup,
  • 00:25:12.080 --> 00:25:15.230
  • or a darkness of a hardship in your life,
  • 00:25:15.230 --> 00:25:18.040
  • you can find new life, and you can find light.
  • 00:25:18.040 --> 00:25:21.050
  • I want to interest you in my book called, Rise!
  • 00:25:21.050 --> 00:25:24.160
