  • 00:00:10.140 --> 00:00:21.020
  • Hebrews chapter 9 describes... and I want you to help me watch
  • 00:00:21.030 --> 00:00:25.290
  • for three words... or three usage for the word appear in
  • 00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:30.210
  • your Bible. Verse 24, chapter 9 says: 24) For Christ has entered
  • 00:00:30.220 --> 00:00:38.080
  • not into the Holy Place made with hands, which are copies of
  • 00:00:38.090 --> 00:00:41.220
  • the true things, but into heaven itself, now to (there it is)
  • 00:00:41.230 --> 00:00:46.030
  • appear in the presence of God in our behalf. So circle that word
  • 00:00:46.040 --> 00:00:51.060
  • appear in verse 24. That's His appearance as Priest in the
  • 00:00:51.070 --> 00:00:56.160
  • presence of God. Verse 25: 25) Nor was to offer himself
  • 00:00:56.170 --> 00:01:00.240
  • repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every
  • 00:01:00.250 --> 00:01:04.020
  • year with blood not his own, 26) for then he would have to suffer
  • 00:01:04.030 --> 00:01:07.170
  • repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he
  • 00:01:07.180 --> 00:01:12.090
  • has appeared once (circle that again, that word appeared)...
  • 00:01:12.100 --> 00:01:17.070
  • appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by
  • 00:01:17.080 --> 00:01:22.160
  • the sacrifice of himself. That's the second appearance of Jesus
  • 00:01:22.170 --> 00:01:26.180
  • talked about in these verses and this is His appearance as
  • 00:01:26.190 --> 00:01:30.250
  • Prophet or Messiah; Savior. Verse 27, here's an important
  • 00:01:30.260 --> 00:01:37.170
  • verse: 27) And just as it is appointed for man to die once,
  • 00:01:37.180 --> 00:01:43.210
  • and after that comes the judgment, 28) so Christ, having
  • 00:01:43.220 --> 00:01:47.230
  • been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear (there
  • 00:01:47.240 --> 00:01:52.160
  • it is again) a second time, not to deal with sin but to save
  • 00:01:52.170 --> 00:01:58.120
  • those who are eagerly waiting for Him. So that His appearance
  • 00:01:58.130 --> 00:02:03.140
  • as King. Prophet, Priest and King! He comes as Messiah, He
  • 00:02:03.150 --> 00:02:11.260
  • comes as mediators, He comes as Majesty! The Christ of every
  • 00:02:11.270 --> 00:02:18.060
  • Christian, the savior of all seasons... Christmas past,
  • 00:02:18.070 --> 00:02:21.160
  • that's Prophet. Christmas present, that's Priest.
  • 00:02:21.170 --> 00:02:25.290
  • Christmas future, that is King. Today's focus in these three
  • 00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:31.240
  • messages is Jesus the Prophet. Now we've already learned in the
  • 00:02:31.250 --> 00:02:38.050
  • book of Hebrews that Jesus is greater than the prophets. We
  • 00:02:38.060 --> 00:02:43.270
  • have learned that He is superior to Moses, and even superior to
  • 00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:50.040
  • the angels. Christ above all! None greater than Him! So when
  • 00:02:50.050 --> 00:02:56.260
  • we say Jesus is the Prophet. We're not suggesting that He is
  • 00:02:56.270 --> 00:03:01.280
  • a prophet in the line of succession of other prophets.
  • 00:03:01.290 --> 00:03:05.100
  • He's not just another prophet. He is not just another Old
  • 00:03:05.110 --> 00:03:10.000
  • Testament prophet. And He's certainly not a false prophet.
  • 00:03:10.010 --> 00:03:14.110
  • Mohammed claims to be... or claimed to be a prophet. And
  • 00:03:14.120 --> 00:03:19.030
  • others have come along and said they were prophets. [Matthew
  • 00:03:19.040 --> 00:03:21.230
  • 24:11] Jesus said in the Last Days there will be many rise
  • 00:03:21.240 --> 00:03:23.260
  • up... false prophets in the world. So Jesus is not a
  • 00:03:23.270 --> 00:03:29.100
  • prophet. Jesus is the Prophet! This is a synonym for Messiah,
  • 00:03:29.110 --> 00:03:39.270
  • the one who is promised, the Promised One. This is Prophet
  • 00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:44.040
  • with a capital P! The Prophet: the One who came and with His
  • 00:03:44.050 --> 00:03:52.160
  • works and His Word would fulfill all of the promises of the
  • 00:03:52.170 --> 00:03:57.150
  • Bible, both Old Testament and New Testament. Jesus the Prophet
  • 00:03:57.160 --> 00:04:03.170
  • would fulfill all the prophecies of the Bible. The Bible says
  • 00:04:03.180 --> 00:04:10.260
  • that Jesus is the key to understanding prophecy.
  • 00:04:10.270 --> 00:04:16.230
  • Revelation chapter 19, verse 10: "The testimony of Jesus is the
  • 00:04:16.240 --> 00:04:21.090
  • spirit of prophecy." So who Jesus is and what Jesus said is
  • 00:04:21.100 --> 00:04:26.010
  • the spirit of prophecy. He said [Matthew 5:17], "I've not come
  • 00:04:26.020 --> 00:04:29.140
  • to destroy the law of the prophets but to fulfill it." He
  • 00:04:29.150 --> 00:04:32.290
  • is everything the Bible promised in the coming of the Messiah,
  • 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:38.070
  • the Prophet, into the world. When Jesus was walking with
  • 00:04:38.080 --> 00:04:42.120
  • those disciples after the resurrection on the road to
  • 00:04:42.130 --> 00:04:45.020
  • Emmaus, it says that [Luke 24:27] "He began with Moses and
  • 00:04:45.030 --> 00:04:50.010
  • the prophets and showed them in all the Scriptures the things
  • 00:04:50.020 --> 00:04:53.060
  • concerning Himself." Jesus is throughout the Bible. And all of
  • 00:04:53.070 --> 00:04:58.020
  • the prophecies, all of the testimonies, all of the words of
  • 00:04:58.030 --> 00:05:00.280
  • the Bible point to the Prophet! So let's focus on that. How is
  • 00:05:00.290 --> 00:05:10.290
  • Jesus the Prophet? He fulfilled prophecy. And that's why in
  • 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:18.220
  • verse 26 of Hebrews 9, as we read it earlier, note it again,
  • 00:05:18.230 --> 00:05:23.140
  • underscore it in your Bibles. He came "to put away sin by the
  • 00:05:23.150 --> 00:05:28.050
  • sacrifice of Himself." This is the First Coming; this is why
  • 00:05:28.060 --> 00:05:32.250
  • Jesus came. Later on in verse 28, it says that "He came as an
  • 00:05:32.260 --> 00:05:38.020
  • offering... (the Gift...) He came as an offering to bear the
  • 00:05:38.030 --> 00:05:43.100
  • sins of many". [Matthew 1:21] "You shall call His name Jesus
  • 00:05:43.110 --> 00:05:46.180
  • for He will save His people from their sins!" He is the
  • 00:05:46.190 --> 00:05:50.110
  • sin-bearer! And His purpose as Prophet, as Messiah was not a
  • 00:05:50.120 --> 00:05:57.140
  • military victory for Israel, but a spiritual salvation victory
  • 00:05:57.150 --> 00:06:02.030
  • for the whole world! That includes you and me! So He is
  • 00:06:02.040 --> 00:06:08.030
  • the Prophet! And He came and he lived and died. When He was born
  • 00:06:08.040 --> 00:06:14.100
  • at Bethlehem even the cradle touches the cross, and
  • 00:06:14.110 --> 00:06:18.270
  • ultimately the crown. Jesus lived under the shadow of the
  • 00:06:18.280 --> 00:06:24.260
  • cross from His boyhood upward. Speaking prophetically the
  • 00:06:24.270 --> 00:06:30.220
  • psalmist said [Psalm 88:15], "I was afflicted from My youth."
  • 00:06:30.230 --> 00:06:34.000
  • Jesus was afflicted with death and suffering even from His
  • 00:06:34.010 --> 00:06:37.020
  • youth. Isaiah the prophet said [Isaiah 53:3], "He was a man of
  • 00:06:37.030 --> 00:06:40.130
  • sorrows and acquainted with grief." Jesus was born under the
  • 00:06:40.140 --> 00:06:45.070
  • shadow of the cross and He bore... Imagine that! His entire
  • 00:06:45.080 --> 00:06:52.030
  • life... He saw a rose bush, He saw the thorns. He saw
  • 00:06:52.040 --> 00:06:57.040
  • crucifixions along the side of the road, He knew that one day
  • 00:06:57.050 --> 00:07:00.130
  • that would be Him. I mean, it's one thing to know that we're all
  • 00:07:00.140 --> 00:07:04.140
  • going to die...[Hebrews 9:27] "It's appointed unto man once to
  • 00:07:04.150 --> 00:07:06.150
  • die..." but, I mean, to know how and when! Jesus did. And He bore
  • 00:07:06.160 --> 00:07:11.030
  • that suffering and that pain... that emotional burden, the
  • 00:07:11.040 --> 00:07:14.010
  • physical pain of the cross. No use today describing the agony
  • 00:07:14.020 --> 00:07:17.170
  • of the cross, what Christ did in dying on the cross, the pain;
  • 00:07:17.180 --> 00:07:21.140
  • the suffering. But the fact is the cup of suffering... the
  • 00:07:21.150 --> 00:07:25.000
  • cross was always before Jesus! Never out of His mind, because
  • 00:07:25.010 --> 00:07:29.260
  • you were never out of His mind. He came for you. And the cross,
  • 00:07:29.270 --> 00:07:36.040
  • of course, stands as a perpetual reminder of His blood and His
  • 00:07:36.050 --> 00:07:40.250
  • body that is given for us. The Scripture says [Hebrews 10:5],
  • 00:07:40.260 --> 00:07:43.280
  • "You have prepared a body for Me." And the body of the Lord
  • 00:07:43.290 --> 00:07:47.230
  • Jesus Christ prepared in the womb of Mary, was given as a
  • 00:07:47.240 --> 00:07:51.060
  • sacrifice, the pure Lamb of God, on the cross! That's the role of
  • 00:07:51.070 --> 00:07:59.270
  • the Messiah, the Prophet. Not as a conquering King yet, but as a
  • 00:07:59.280 --> 00:08:04.100
  • suffering Servant. Shows us the seriousness of our sin, and He
  • 00:08:04.110 --> 00:08:08.190
  • is the Sin-bearer. He's also the Satan-slayer. Hebrews chapter 2
  • 00:08:08.200 --> 00:08:13.240
  • and verse 9... Hebrews chapter 2, verse 9. (We're in Hebrews. I
  • 00:08:13.250 --> 00:08:19.100
  • hope you're loving it as much as I am.) Let's go back and look at
  • 00:08:19.110 --> 00:08:22.050
  • these verses: "But we see Him (Jesus) who for a while was made
  • 00:08:22.060 --> 00:08:26.240
  • lower than the angels... (That's His humanity), namely Jesus, now
  • 00:08:26.250 --> 00:08:31.190
  • crowned with glory and honor because of... (why?) ... the
  • 00:08:31.200 --> 00:08:35.210
  • suffering of death so that by the grace of God He may taste
  • 00:08:35.220 --> 00:08:41.010
  • death for everyone!" What was in that cup that He drank? The
  • 00:08:41.020 --> 00:08:47.030
  • bitter dregs of man's sinfulness! He tasted death for
  • 00:08:47.040 --> 00:08:50.180
  • you and me! He suffered and died for all of us! And then in verse
  • 00:08:50.190 --> 00:08:56.120
  • 14: "Since, therefore, the children share in flesh and
  • 00:08:56.130 --> 00:09:00.080
  • blood, He Himself likewise partook of the same thing, that
  • 00:09:00.090 --> 00:09:05.190
  • through death He might destroy the one who has the power of
  • 00:09:05.200 --> 00:09:11.150
  • death, that is, the devil." He is Sin-bearer; He is
  • 00:09:11.160 --> 00:09:16.230
  • Satan-slayer! He is the Prophet of God, the Messiah who has
  • 00:09:16.240 --> 00:09:24.060
  • come! When He died on the cross, He did it just once. That's the
  • 00:09:24.070 --> 00:09:30.040
  • theme of Hebrews. He did it once. He suffered once for our
  • 00:09:30.050 --> 00:09:33.150
  • sins; He suffered once and for all! Aren't you glad that He
  • 00:09:33.160 --> 00:09:36.250
  • only did it once? It was terrible, it was tragic. He did
  • 00:09:36.260 --> 00:09:41.080
  • it one time. But in that one time the blood of Jesus Christ,
  • 00:09:41.090 --> 00:09:46.210
  • God's Son, covers us and cleanses us from all sin. That's
  • 00:09:46.220 --> 00:09:50.010
  • why the color of Christmas is red, the blood of the Lord Jesus
  • 00:09:50.020 --> 00:09:55.270
  • Christ!
  • 00:09:55.280 --> 00:09:56.280
  • [Music]
  • 00:09:56.290 --> 00:10:07.110
  • Thanks to the amazing support from generous
  • 00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:09.090
  • friends like you, PowerPoint Ministry is celebrating 25 years
  • 00:10:09.100 --> 00:10:13.150
  • of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ on the air and
  • 00:10:13.160 --> 00:10:16.280
  • online. And at the core of each one of my messages is one thing:
  • 00:10:16.290 --> 00:10:21.200
  • the power of Jesus Christ to change our lives. So today I
  • 00:10:21.210 --> 00:10:27.070
  • want to send you a great resource to help you tap into
  • 00:10:27.080 --> 00:10:30.170
  • that remarkable power of the gospel, it's THE GOSPEL OF LUKE,
  • 00:10:30.180 --> 00:10:35.000
  • the story of Jesus and it also contains a scripture journal.
  • 00:10:35.010 --> 00:10:39.160
  • This beautiful journal contains Luke's account of the Christmas
  • 00:10:39.170 --> 00:10:43.050
  • story and of course the miracles and the messages of Jesus, His
  • 00:10:43.060 --> 00:10:47.050
  • life, His death, His resurrection, all a personal and
  • 00:10:47.060 --> 00:10:51.060
  • very close look at our Lord's life through Luke the physician.
  • 00:10:51.070 --> 00:10:55.050
  • And it will help you focus your heart this Christmas season on
  • 00:10:55.060 --> 00:10:58.290
  • the one who came, who lived, who died and rose again for you. So
  • 00:10:59.000 --> 00:11:03.030
  • call the number on the screen or visit us online at
  • 00:11:03.040 --> 00:11:06.020
  • JackGraham.org to donate to our ministry and receive THE GOSPEL
  • 00:11:06.030 --> 00:11:11.120
  • OF LUKE scripture journal.
  • 00:11:11.130 --> 00:11:17.200
  • But how could we speak of Jesus the
  • 00:11:17.210 --> 00:11:19.080
  • Prophet without speaking of His words... the magnificent,
  • 00:11:19.090 --> 00:11:26.020
  • powerful words! Not only His work that was finished at the
  • 00:11:26.030 --> 00:11:31.220
  • cross, but His words that are enduring to this generation and
  • 00:11:31.230 --> 00:11:34.280
  • beyond! W. H. Griffith Thomas said this about the words of
  • 00:11:34.290 --> 00:11:38.090
  • Jesus: "Christ's words are a permanent value because of His
  • 00:11:38.100 --> 00:11:41.160
  • person. They endure because He endured!" No one has ever spoken
  • 00:11:41.170 --> 00:11:46.170
  • words like Jesus. In fact, Jesus is the Word... embodiment of the
  • 00:11:46.180 --> 00:11:51.090
  • Word, and He speaks the Word. He is the Messenger; He is the
  • 00:11:51.100 --> 00:11:55.090
  • message!" Even when He was a youth, twelve years of age, in
  • 00:11:55.100 --> 00:12:02.210
  • the temple when He spoke His words astounded the scholars and
  • 00:12:02.220 --> 00:12:08.280
  • the scribes and the priests in the temple! And then His words
  • 00:12:08.290 --> 00:12:17.000
  • that the common people... people like you and me... heard gladly.
  • 00:12:17.010 --> 00:12:22.260
  • There was something so winsome about His words and the way He
  • 00:12:22.270 --> 00:12:26.200
  • communicated. People came from everywhere just to get a glimpse
  • 00:12:26.210 --> 00:12:29.260
  • of Him, just to touch the hem of His garment, and yes, just to
  • 00:12:29.270 --> 00:12:33.020
  • hear His words! Because He came preaching the words of the
  • 00:12:33.030 --> 00:12:36.130
  • kingdom of God! The Prophet... the (capital "P") Prophet! His
  • 00:12:36.140 --> 00:12:46.140
  • first recorded words of His ministry were [Matthew 3:2],
  • 00:12:46.150 --> 00:12:51.000
  • "Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand!" Pretty important!
  • 00:12:51.010 --> 00:12:55.140
  • God had one Son and He made Him a Preacher, a Prophet, bringing
  • 00:12:55.150 --> 00:13:02.080
  • words that changed the world! Common people heard Him gladly.
  • 00:13:02.090 --> 00:13:09.030
  • Little children gathered up around Him, formed around His
  • 00:13:09.040 --> 00:13:14.100
  • robe and looked into His eyes, because even the words of Jesus
  • 00:13:14.110 --> 00:13:17.160
  • to a child... A child could understand Him! And yet a
  • 00:13:17.170 --> 00:13:22.230
  • hardened, Roman soldier, at the end, when Christ was dying on
  • 00:13:22.240 --> 00:13:26.060
  • the cross, looked at Jesus as He died, and said [Matthew 27:54],
  • 00:13:26.070 --> 00:13:30.140
  • "Surely this Man was the Son of God!" because no one had spoken
  • 00:13:30.150 --> 00:13:33.200
  • like Him! The words of Jesus! The words of Jesus. One thing
  • 00:13:33.210 --> 00:13:47.090
  • you might consider doing at this Christmas season: at this
  • 00:13:47.100 --> 00:13:50.220
  • Advent. Many of us are reading devotional books. I have one out
  • 00:13:50.230 --> 00:13:56.130
  • called The Cost of Christmas, and you can read them online.
  • 00:13:56.140 --> 00:14:01.120
  • Wonderful devotional books. Read that as supplementary. But read
  • 00:14:01.130 --> 00:14:06.040
  • the Word. And one thing that I'm doing, that I would encourage
  • 00:14:06.050 --> 00:14:09.190
  • you to do at Christmas, as I've been thinking about this
  • 00:14:09.200 --> 00:14:12.250
  • passage, is read the red. You know what I mean, read the red?
  • 00:14:12.260 --> 00:14:18.160
  • I have in my hand not only a red Bible, but a red-letter edition
  • 00:14:18.170 --> 00:14:25.010
  • of the Bible. You may not know it, but the red-letter edition
  • 00:14:25.020 --> 00:14:30.060
  • of the Bible did not come into being until the end of the 19th
  • 00:14:30.070 --> 00:14:33.220
  • century. There was a man who was editor of a magazine by the name
  • 00:14:33.230 --> 00:14:38.000
  • of Klopsch... (strange name), but he thought it would be a
  • 00:14:38.010 --> 00:14:41.160
  • good idea to put the words of Jesus in a different color than
  • 00:14:41.170 --> 00:14:45.070
  • the black and the white, the black on the white, so the words
  • 00:14:45.080 --> 00:14:48.000
  • of Jesus would stand out. So what did he do? He put the words
  • 00:14:48.010 --> 00:14:51.250
  • of Jesus first in the New Testament that was published in
  • 00:14:51.260 --> 00:14:54.090
  • 19... 1899, and then in the words... put it in the entire
  • 00:14:54.100 --> 00:14:59.160
  • Bible... a new red-letter edition of the Bible in 1901.
  • 00:14:59.170 --> 00:15:04.020
  • And since that day we've had red-letter editions of the
  • 00:15:04.030 --> 00:15:06.230
  • Bible. Now, let me be clear, very important. All of the words
  • 00:15:06.240 --> 00:15:14.040
  • of the Bible are pure, all the words of the Bible are the words
  • 00:15:14.050 --> 00:15:18.030
  • of God; inerrant and infallible. Not one single word, Old
  • 00:15:18.040 --> 00:15:21.250
  • Testament, New Testament! All of it! [2 Timothy 3:16] "All
  • 00:15:21.260 --> 00:15:24.080
  • Scripture is breathed out by God." So there's not one word
  • 00:15:24.090 --> 00:15:28.220
  • that is more vital. The words of Jesus are not more inspired in
  • 00:15:28.230 --> 00:15:32.250
  • the Bible than the words of Paul. Say, "Amen" to that [Amen]
  • 00:15:32.260 --> 00:15:38.030
  • because it's true! But, I like the fact that you can read the
  • 00:15:38.040 --> 00:15:46.040
  • words of Jesus...read the red. The color of Christmas is
  • 00:15:46.050 --> 00:15:48.150
  • what... read the red. And when you read the red, as I'm doing
  • 00:15:48.160 --> 00:15:53.220
  • at this Christmas season, some of the verses, of course,...
  • 00:15:53.230 --> 00:15:56.220
  • some of the words of Jesus. How long has it been since you just
  • 00:15:56.230 --> 00:15:59.220
  • read the words of Jesus? Sermon on the Mount, Lord's Prayer,
  • 00:15:59.230 --> 00:16:08.130
  • Matthew 24... the ends of time and the end of the ages. But
  • 00:16:08.140 --> 00:16:14.030
  • just think about these words. Can you imagine a world in which
  • 00:16:14.040 --> 00:16:17.010
  • the Word of God, the words of Jesus were never recorded? He
  • 00:16:17.020 --> 00:16:20.200
  • spoke them, but the Holy Spirit preserved them. They were
  • 00:16:20.210 --> 00:16:23.180
  • written down and given to us. Thank God for the red! John 3:16
  • 00:16:23.190 --> 00:16:32.060
  • Words in red. Jesus said, "For God so loved the world that He
  • 00:16:32.070 --> 00:16:39.250
  • gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him would
  • 00:16:39.260 --> 00:16:43.000
  • not perish, but have everlasting life." And in that same chapter
  • 00:16:43.010 --> 00:16:47.200
  • 3, written in red [John 3:7], "You must be born again." No one
  • 00:16:47.210 --> 00:16:54.210
  • will see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. The
  • 00:16:54.220 --> 00:16:57.130
  • Baptists didn't make that up. Billy Graham didn't make it
  • 00:16:57.140 --> 00:17:01.230
  • up... to be born again. Jesus said... It's in the red!, "You
  • 00:17:01.240 --> 00:17:07.020
  • must be born again." He said in John chapter 10, verse 10: "The
  • 00:17:07.030 --> 00:17:12.220
  • devil comes to kill and steal and destroy, but I have come...
  • 00:17:12.230 --> 00:17:16.000
  • (He tells us unequivocally why He came!) ...that you might have
  • 00:17:16.010 --> 00:17:19.050
  • life and have it more abundantly." Life with a capital
  • 00:17:19.060 --> 00:17:21.280
  • "L"! It's in the red. At the graveside of one of His dearest
  • 00:17:21.290 --> 00:17:28.250
  • friends Lazarus, He gave these words in John chapter 11 [John
  • 00:17:28.260 --> 00:17:33.260
  • 11:25], "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in
  • 00:17:33.270 --> 00:17:36.270
  • me though he be dead, yet shall he live." Written in red. He
  • 00:17:36.280 --> 00:17:44.250
  • taught us to pray [Matthew 6:9], "Our Father who art in
  • 00:17:44.260 --> 00:17:46.290
  • heaven...". He said in Matthew 11:28: "Come unto Me... come to
  • 00:17:47.000 --> 00:17:50.060
  • Me all you that labor and are heavy laden; I will give you
  • 00:17:50.070 --> 00:17:55.210
  • rest." Hear Him speaking to you today. It's in the red. Jesus is
  • 00:17:55.220 --> 00:18:04.040
  • saying, "Come to Me; I will give you rest"; rest for your souls.
  • 00:18:04.050 --> 00:18:13.080
  • How do we know the words of Jesus are real? How do we know
  • 00:18:13.090 --> 00:18:18.180
  • that they're not just red, that they're real? What did Jesus say
  • 00:18:18.190 --> 00:18:20.250
  • about His own words? He claimed divine authority. He said, "I'm
  • 00:18:20.260 --> 00:18:23.070
  • not making this stuff up. I'm not quoting the prophets. I'm
  • 00:18:23.080 --> 00:18:28.020
  • speaking with divine authority. [John 12:49] "I speak the words
  • 00:18:28.030 --> 00:18:30.160
  • that the Father has given Me." He said... Jesus said you can
  • 00:18:30.170 --> 00:18:34.120
  • read the red because [John 12:50] "My words lead to eternal
  • 00:18:34.130 --> 00:18:38.130
  • life!" Now if someone tells me that my words lead to eternal
  • 00:18:38.140 --> 00:18:43.220
  • life, I'm all ears! Jesus said that! And He also said, "My
  • 00:18:43.230 --> 00:18:48.240
  • words..." He said ... [Matthew 24:35] , "Heaven and earth will
  • 00:18:48.250 --> 00:18:51.030
  • pass away, but My word will never pass away." He declared
  • 00:18:51.040 --> 00:18:55.220
  • His word would never pass away! He also commanded that His words
  • 00:18:55.230 --> 00:19:00.170
  • would be delivered and declared to the ends of the earth. Always
  • 00:19:00.180 --> 00:19:06.060
  • at all times. He challenged His disciples, He commanded all of
  • 00:19:06.070 --> 00:19:08.160
  • us to [Mark 16:15] "go into all the world and preach the Gospel
  • 00:19:08.170 --> 00:19:12.060
  • and teach them to observe all these things that I've commanded
  • 00:19:12.070 --> 00:19:15.060
  • you"... all these words. We are His witnesses. We are to take
  • 00:19:15.070 --> 00:19:19.250
  • His words... the Gospel... it's in the red! ... to people all
  • 00:19:19.260 --> 00:19:26.130
  • over the world. You know, the Gospel is good news but it's
  • 00:19:26.140 --> 00:19:30.270
  • only good news if it gets there on time. "Now is the time!" We
  • 00:19:30.280 --> 00:19:37.220
  • have an opportunity to take the Gospel to our neighbors and to
  • 00:19:37.230 --> 00:19:41.250
  • the nations. So He commanded His word would be proclaimed
  • 00:19:41.260 --> 00:19:44.050
  • throughout earth. And then He said, "The destiny of the human
  • 00:19:44.060 --> 00:19:48.010
  • soul... your destiny and mine... is dependent upon what you do
  • 00:19:48.020 --> 00:19:52.240
  • with My words, whether you believe them, receive them, or
  • 00:19:52.250 --> 00:19:58.060
  • reject them." So every person has to decide because Jesus is a
  • 00:19:58.070 --> 00:20:04.270
  • teacher, but more than a teacher, He's a prophet, but
  • 00:20:04.280 --> 00:20:08.120
  • more than a prophet. He is the Prophet! He is the Messiah! He
  • 00:20:08.130 --> 00:20:13.010
  • is the Savior of the world. C. S. Lewis, and I'll close with
  • 00:20:13.020 --> 00:20:16.250
  • this... Great man, of course, intellect. English professor at
  • 00:20:16.260 --> 00:20:22.050
  • Oxford, an agnostic who came to faith in Christ and became a
  • 00:20:22.060 --> 00:20:25.120
  • radical follower of Jesus, he said this. I believe it's in his
  • 00:20:25.130 --> 00:20:32.000
  • book "Mere Christianity". Often quoted, but here it is again: "I
  • 00:20:32.010 --> 00:20:37.020
  • am trying to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing
  • 00:20:37.030 --> 00:20:40.100
  • that people say about Him (Jesus): I'm ready to accept
  • 00:20:40.110 --> 00:20:44.030
  • Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to
  • 00:20:44.040 --> 00:20:47.080
  • be God. That's the one thing we must not say. A man who is
  • 00:20:47.090 --> 00:20:52.260
  • merely a man and said the sort of things that Jesus said would
  • 00:20:52.270 --> 00:20:56.070
  • not be a great moral teacher! He would either be a lunatic-on the
  • 00:20:56.080 --> 00:21:00.280
  • level with a man who says he's a poached egg-or else he would be
  • 00:21:00.290 --> 00:21:05.280
  • the devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either this man
  • 00:21:05.290 --> 00:21:11.200
  • was, and is, the Son of God, or else a mad man or something
  • 00:21:11.210 --> 00:21:14.270
  • worse! You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and
  • 00:21:14.280 --> 00:21:19.250
  • kill Him as a demon or you can fall at His feet and call Him
  • 00:21:19.260 --> 00:21:23.000
  • Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing
  • 00:21:23.010 --> 00:21:26.100
  • nonsense about His being a great human teacher! He has not left
  • 00:21:26.110 --> 00:21:31.020
  • that open to us; He did not intend to. ... Now it seems to
  • 00:21:31.030 --> 00:21:34.210
  • me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and
  • 00:21:34.220 --> 00:21:38.280
  • consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may
  • 00:21:38.290 --> 00:21:43.200
  • seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God." The
  • 00:21:43.210 --> 00:21:52.040
  • Prophet. When we go to Israel one of our first stops is
  • 00:21:52.050 --> 00:21:58.240
  • Nazareth, the boyhood home of Jesus. And we go out to the edge
  • 00:21:58.250 --> 00:22:04.150
  • of town where there is a cliff overlooking... a very steep fall
  • 00:22:04.160 --> 00:22:08.200
  • and valley beneath, and it is a place where many believe that a
  • 00:22:08.210 --> 00:22:14.130
  • very powerful event took place in Scripture. It was on the
  • 00:22:14.140 --> 00:22:19.150
  • heels of Jesus announcing Himself as the Messiah in His
  • 00:22:19.160 --> 00:22:22.240
  • hometown of Nazareth. He goes into the synagogue, He opens the
  • 00:22:22.250 --> 00:22:27.100
  • book of Isaiah, says [Luke 4:18], "The Lord has anointed Me
  • 00:22:27.110 --> 00:22:30.010
  • to preach Good News to the brokenhearted, the bound, the
  • 00:22:30.020 --> 00:22:35.040
  • bruised, the blind, and He declared Himself to be the
  • 00:22:35.050 --> 00:22:40.050
  • Prophet, the One Israel was expecting. He declared Himself,
  • 00:22:40.060 --> 00:22:46.090
  • announced His Messiah-ship. It... it stunned everyone in the
  • 00:22:46.100 --> 00:22:52.080
  • synagogue, and someone said, "Wait a minute, wait a minute! I
  • 00:22:52.090 --> 00:22:55.170
  • recognize Him! Isn't that ... I know Him! That's the carpenter's
  • 00:22:55.180 --> 00:23:00.190
  • son! Isn't that Joseph the carpenter's son? Who does He
  • 00:23:00.200 --> 00:23:04.230
  • think He is, coming here declaring that He is the
  • 00:23:04.240 --> 00:23:08.240
  • Anointed One! The Prophet, the Prophet, greater than Moses!"
  • 00:23:08.250 --> 00:23:14.230
  • And they became so angry that they grabbed Him and took Him to
  • 00:23:14.240 --> 00:23:17.280
  • the edge of town. This was when Jesus said [Mark 6:4], "A
  • 00:23:17.290 --> 00:23:21.140
  • prophet has no honor in his own country." I mean, "We saw Him as
  • 00:23:21.150 --> 00:23:27.120
  • a little boy. We saw Him sweating in a carpenter's shop.
  • 00:23:27.130 --> 00:23:32.050
  • Just a common carpenter! We saw all of that! Jesus, the Messiah?
  • 00:23:32.060 --> 00:23:40.140
  • Jesus, the Prophet? No way!" - "A prophet has no honor in His
  • 00:23:40.150 --> 00:23:45.110
  • own country." And they took Him out to throw Him over the cliff.
  • 00:23:45.120 --> 00:23:49.130
  • But something miraculous happened. We don't know exactly
  • 00:23:49.140 --> 00:23:52.060
  • how it happened. I just have in my own imagination what
  • 00:23:52.070 --> 00:23:54.100
  • happened: but as they're wrestling there... it was mob
  • 00:23:54.110 --> 00:23:56.230
  • violence, they were taking Him out. Because that's what they do
  • 00:23:56.240 --> 00:23:59.210
  • with false prophets, is kill them. They considered Him a
  • 00:23:59.220 --> 00:24:02.260
  • false prophet! So they're going to throw Him over... over the
  • 00:24:02.270 --> 00:24:06.020
  • cliff to die. And somehow He just walked right through them
  • 00:24:06.030 --> 00:24:13.280
  • and walked away. I mean, they just... I don't know if they
  • 00:24:13.290 --> 00:24:17.220
  • were stunned, if they were stopped, what happened. A
  • 00:24:17.230 --> 00:24:24.020
  • similar thing happened in the Garden when all the soldiers
  • 00:24:24.030 --> 00:24:26.130
  • fell down when they came into the presence of Jesus. Just His
  • 00:24:26.140 --> 00:24:28.100
  • very presence. Somehow I believe the royal, regal presence of
  • 00:24:28.110 --> 00:24:30.130
  • Jesus was so strong at that moment that He just walked right
  • 00:24:30.140 --> 00:24:33.060
  • through them and out. But something happened that day, He
  • 00:24:33.070 --> 00:24:39.060
  • never came back to Nazareth. They rejected Him. [John 1:11]
  • 00:24:39.070 --> 00:24:43.070
  • "He came unto His own; His own received Him not." They rejected
  • 00:24:43.080 --> 00:24:45.170
  • Him. He left. As far as we know in the Bible He never came back.
  • 00:24:45.180 --> 00:24:48.140
  • And to this day when we visit Nazareth, Nazareth is not a
  • 00:24:48.150 --> 00:24:52.220
  • Christian town; it is a Muslim town. There are a few Christians
  • 00:24:52.230 --> 00:24:57.020
  • there... a few strong believers there, but to this day it
  • 00:24:57.030 --> 00:25:05.120
  • rejects the Prophet of their own town. It's a dangerous thing to
  • 00:25:05.130 --> 00:25:10.110
  • reject the Lord Jesus Christ. He may leave and never come back.
  • 00:25:10.120 --> 00:25:15.260
  • The Bible says, [Genesis 6:3] "My Spirit will not always
  • 00:25:15.270 --> 00:25:18.290
  • strive with a man." The Holy Spirit is working in your heart
  • 00:25:19.000 --> 00:25:25.110
  • today, watching online, right here in this room, and you have
  • 00:25:25.120 --> 00:25:28.090
  • a decision to make: Is He Lord? Is He liar? Is He a lunatic? I
  • 00:25:28.100 --> 00:25:32.290
  • say He is Lord! He is Prophet! The Savior of the whole world
  • 00:25:33.000 --> 00:25:40.220
  • and the Savior of my life. And you can make that same choice
  • 00:25:40.230 --> 00:25:44.040
  • today.
  • 00:25:44.050 --> 00:25:45.200
  • [Music]
