  • Now here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
  • 00:02:02.090 --> 00:02:04.230
  • "The Joy of Security."
  • 00:02:04.240 --> 00:02:06.190
  • Dr. David Jeremiah: I heard about a lady who was worried
  • 00:02:08.020 --> 00:02:10.050
  • because she wasn't worrying as much as she used to worry,
  • 00:02:10.060 --> 00:02:13.060
  • and she was wondering what she should be worrying about
  • 00:02:13.070 --> 00:02:16.070
  • that she wasn't worrying about.
  • 00:02:16.080 --> 00:02:19.210
  • Another man who hired somebody to worry on his behalf,
  • 00:02:19.220 --> 00:02:24.120
  • paid him to worry, paid him a lot of money,
  • 00:02:24.130 --> 00:02:27.270
  • and his friend said,
  • 00:02:27.280 --> 00:02:29.070
  • "Isn't that really a lot of money to spend?"
  • 00:02:29.080 --> 00:02:31.160
  • He says, "Well, I don't know. I let him worry about that."
  • 00:02:31.170 --> 00:02:34.060
  • So, you know, that's the way it goes.
  • 00:02:34.070 --> 00:02:36.160
  • Some people try to get around worry
  • 00:02:36.170 --> 00:02:39.030
  • in the simplest and craziest ways,
  • 00:02:39.040 --> 00:02:41.260
  • but how many of you know Christians who still worry?
  • 00:02:41.270 --> 00:02:46.010
  • And it must be true because Paul wrote this
  • 00:02:46.020 --> 00:02:48.070
  • to a group of believers in Philippi,
  • 00:02:48.080 --> 00:02:51.070
  • all of whom were Christ followers,
  • 00:02:51.080 --> 00:02:53.170
  • and he gave this instruction to them about worrying.
  • 00:02:53.180 --> 00:02:58.020
  • In these four verses,
  • 00:02:58.030 --> 00:02:59.160
  • which are very prominent texts in the Scripture,
  • 00:02:59.170 --> 00:03:03.040
  • Paul does four things:
  • 00:03:03.050 --> 00:03:04.200
  • First of all, he diagnoses the problem,
  • 00:03:04.210 --> 00:03:07.180
  • and then he prescribes a cure,
  • 00:03:07.190 --> 00:03:10.150
  • and then he recommends a program,
  • 00:03:10.160 --> 00:03:12.250
  • and, finally, he gives a promise.
  • 00:03:12.260 --> 00:03:15.090
  • And we're gonna go through those things today, one by one,
  • 00:03:15.100 --> 00:03:18.010
  • just taking it as it comes in the Scripture itself.
  • 00:03:18.020 --> 00:03:20.290
  • Let's begin with the problem, which is worry.
  • 00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:24.130
  • Paul writes in Philippines 4:6, "Be anxious for nothing."
  • 00:03:24.140 --> 00:03:30.060
  • Now, the New King James says, "anxious,"
  • 00:03:30.070 --> 00:03:32.050
  • but the Old King James says, "careful."
  • 00:03:32.060 --> 00:03:35.000
  • The Old King James says, "Be careful for nothing."
  • 00:03:35.010 --> 00:03:37.170
  • Now, that's the key verse for a lot of young people,
  • 00:03:37.180 --> 00:03:39.210
  • you and I both know, but that's not what that means.
  • 00:03:39.220 --> 00:03:42.130
  • The word "careful" there is the word "anxiety."
  • 00:03:42.140 --> 00:03:45.220
  • So Paul is saying,
  • 00:03:45.230 --> 00:03:47.120
  • "Don't be anxious about anything."
  • 00:03:47.130 --> 00:03:50.170
  • It's the same word for the word "worry,"
  • 00:03:50.180 --> 00:03:53.030
  • and it's translated from two words
  • 00:03:53.040 --> 00:03:55.180
  • in the language of the New Testament.
  • 00:03:55.190 --> 00:03:57.180
  • One means the word "mind,"
  • 00:03:57.190 --> 00:03:59.180
  • and the other is the word "divided."
  • 00:03:59.190 --> 00:04:01.200
  • So "worry" is a "divided mind" that goes back and forth
  • 00:04:01.210 --> 00:04:06.120
  • between what is true and what isn't true,
  • 00:04:06.130 --> 00:04:09.040
  • and you never can make the connection.
  • 00:04:09.050 --> 00:04:10.260
  • You're always worrying about what might happen,
  • 00:04:10.270 --> 00:04:14.080
  • and when you do that, according to James,
  • 00:04:14.090 --> 00:04:16.290
  • you are "unstable in all your ways."
  • 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:20.210
  • The word "anxious" that Paul uses here
  • 00:04:20.220 --> 00:04:22.270
  • is a synonym for the word "worry,"
  • 00:04:22.280 --> 00:04:25.000
  • and it's the same word that Jesus used to describe Martha
  • 00:04:25.010 --> 00:04:30.030
  • when he said, "Martha, Martha, you are worried
  • 00:04:30.040 --> 00:04:32.260
  • and troubled about many things."
  • 00:04:32.270 --> 00:04:34.190
  • "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things."
  • 00:04:34.200 --> 00:04:39.130
  • The Lord also use this word in talking with his disciples
  • 00:04:39.140 --> 00:04:42.220
  • when he told them that they were to
  • 00:04:42.230 --> 00:04:45.000
  • "take no thought about food and drink and clothing or shelter."
  • 00:04:45.010 --> 00:04:49.220
  • In other words, he said, "Don't be anxious about all that
  • 00:04:49.230 --> 00:04:52.260
  • because your heavenly Father knows what you need."
  • 00:04:52.270 --> 00:04:55.080
  • So, anxiety, though it is ultimately resolved
  • 00:04:55.090 --> 00:04:58.150
  • through our faith in Christ,
  • 00:04:58.160 --> 00:05:00.160
  • it can sneak back into our lives as Christians
  • 00:05:00.170 --> 00:05:03.120
  • and begin to haunt us if we don't carefully watch out
  • 00:05:03.130 --> 00:05:07.100
  • from the scriptural point of view.
  • 00:05:07.110 --> 00:05:09.210
  • The problem is worry,
  • 00:05:09.220 --> 00:05:12.020
  • and Paul gives us a prescription for that.
  • 00:05:12.030 --> 00:05:15.060
  • Here it is in the next verse, verse 6,
  • 00:05:15.070 --> 00:05:18.130
  • "but in everything by prayer and supplication,
  • 00:05:18.140 --> 00:05:22.070
  • with thanksgiving,
  • 00:05:22.080 --> 00:05:24.010
  • let your requests be made known to God,
  • 00:05:24.020 --> 00:05:26.190
  • and the peace of God,
  • 00:05:26.200 --> 00:05:28.100
  • which surpasses all understanding,
  • 00:05:28.110 --> 00:05:30.230
  • will guard your hearts and your minds
  • 00:05:30.240 --> 00:05:33.050
  • through Christ Jesus."
  • 00:05:33.060 --> 00:05:35.090
  • Here's a marvelous contrast:
  • 00:05:35.100 --> 00:05:37.180
  • "In nothing be anxious, but in everything be prayerful."
  • 00:05:37.190 --> 00:05:42.250
  • I'm convinced that we are confused about prayer.
  • 00:05:42.260 --> 00:05:46.060
  • A lot of people don't understand prayer.
  • 00:05:46.070 --> 00:05:48.280
  • They think that prayer is like a magic genie in Aladdin.
  • 00:05:48.290 --> 00:05:54.110
  • You just sort of pray,
  • 00:05:54.120 --> 00:05:56.080
  • and God does all these wonderful things for you,
  • 00:05:56.090 --> 00:05:59.050
  • that prayer is a way for you to get everything that you want.
  • 00:05:59.060 --> 00:06:03.180
  • I've actually heard sermons about that on television
  • 00:06:03.190 --> 00:06:06.270
  • where people teach that if you pray,
  • 00:06:06.280 --> 00:06:09.120
  • you can get whatever you want.
  • 00:06:09.130 --> 00:06:12.210
  • God is not our magic genie.
  • 00:06:12.220 --> 00:06:15.150
  • He is not automatically bound to give us everything we want.
  • 00:06:15.160 --> 00:06:21.140
  • He often answers our prayers to give us what we need.
  • 00:06:21.150 --> 00:06:25.230
  • Our goal as his children is to learn
  • 00:06:25.240 --> 00:06:28.010
  • how to want what we need,
  • 00:06:28.020 --> 00:06:30.140
  • and then we will be comfortable with how we pray.
  • 00:06:30.150 --> 00:06:34.090
  • That's why the Bible can tell us,
  • 00:06:34.100 --> 00:06:36.020
  • if we ask anything in his will, he will hear us.
  • 00:06:36.030 --> 00:06:39.170
  • What does that mean?
  • 00:06:39.180 --> 00:06:40.270
  • That means that,
  • 00:06:40.280 --> 00:06:42.070
  • if I get my heart in sync with God's heart
  • 00:06:42.080 --> 00:06:45.050
  • about what God wants for me,
  • 00:06:45.060 --> 00:06:47.210
  • when I ask him for what I want and need,
  • 00:06:47.220 --> 00:06:50.180
  • he will answer it because I'm already on his wavelength,
  • 00:06:50.190 --> 00:06:53.210
  • and we're together in sync about prayer.
  • 00:06:53.220 --> 00:06:56.210
  • Paul said that when we are tempted to worry,
  • 00:06:56.220 --> 00:07:00.150
  • we are to pray,
  • 00:07:00.160 --> 00:07:02.080
  • and he gives us four different words here.
  • 00:07:02.090 --> 00:07:04.090
  • Please notice them in the text. The first word is "prayer."
  • 00:07:04.100 --> 00:07:07.240
  • That's kind of the general word for what we do when we pray.
  • 00:07:07.250 --> 00:07:12.020
  • The second word is "supplication."
  • 00:07:12.030 --> 00:07:14.150
  • That is an interesting word
  • 00:07:14.160 --> 00:07:16.000
  • which means "to beg or entreat" somebody,
  • 00:07:16.010 --> 00:07:19.090
  • to come to God--
  • 00:07:19.100 --> 00:07:20.190
  • that's the kind of praying that we pray when we find out
  • 00:07:20.200 --> 00:07:23.100
  • we got a serious illness,
  • 00:07:23.110 --> 00:07:25.260
  • or when somebody that we love has just discovered
  • 00:07:25.270 --> 00:07:28.170
  • they have a serious-- what do we do?
  • 00:07:28.180 --> 00:07:30.050
  • Supplication. It's in entreating.
  • 00:07:30.060 --> 00:07:32.280
  • It's "Lord, please."
  • 00:07:32.290 --> 00:07:34.250
  • I prayed that prayer. I know that prayer.
  • 00:07:34.260 --> 00:07:38.060
  • The third prayer is "requests."
  • 00:07:38.070 --> 00:07:41.110
  • Requests are the lists that we make.
  • 00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:43.160
  • Do you have a list?
  • 00:07:43.170 --> 00:07:44.260
  • You may not have it written down,
  • 00:07:44.270 --> 00:07:46.060
  • but you got one in your head,
  • 00:07:46.070 --> 00:07:47.160
  • certain things that you pray about all the time.
  • 00:07:47.170 --> 00:07:48.280
  • That's the requests on this list.
  • 00:07:48.290 --> 00:07:51.150
  • But the most important word of these four,
  • 00:07:51.160 --> 00:07:54.050
  • more than "prayer," more than "supplication,"
  • 00:07:54.060 --> 00:07:56.180
  • more than "requests," is the word "thanksgiving."
  • 00:07:56.190 --> 00:07:59.240
  • Do you see that word in the Bible?
  • 00:07:59.250 --> 00:08:01.080
  • Everything through prayer and supplication and request--
  • 00:08:02.050 --> 00:08:06.230
  • and notice, the different word is not the word "and."
  • 00:08:06.240 --> 00:08:10.080
  • It's the word "with."
  • 00:08:10.090 --> 00:08:12.070
  • Listen to me, the first three,
  • 00:08:12.080 --> 00:08:14.210
  • "prayer" and "supplication" and "requests,"
  • 00:08:14.220 --> 00:08:19.020
  • but then the word changes "with thanksgiving."
  • 00:08:19.030 --> 00:08:22.170
  • So thanksgiving is not one of the four kinds of prayers.
  • 00:08:22.180 --> 00:08:25.140
  • It's the condition that describes
  • 00:08:25.150 --> 00:08:27.180
  • how you should offer the first three.
  • 00:08:27.190 --> 00:08:29.270
  • So how do you pray?
  • 00:08:29.280 --> 00:08:31.080
  • You pray with prayer and supplication and requests,
  • 00:08:31.090 --> 00:08:34.220
  • and no matter what kind of prayer you're ever praying,
  • 00:08:34.230 --> 00:08:36.250
  • it's always with thanksgiving.
  • 00:08:36.260 --> 00:08:39.030
  • Gratitude is the unwritten promise of God.
  • 00:08:39.040 --> 00:08:42.220
  • When we pray out of thanksgiving,
  • 00:08:42.230 --> 00:08:45.250
  • we have a way of somehow getting God's attention
  • 00:08:45.260 --> 00:08:48.100
  • like we don't in any other way.
  • 00:08:48.110 --> 00:08:50.230
  • Do you pray with thanksgiving?
  • 00:08:50.240 --> 00:08:52.150
  • Do you take note of the things that God does for you?
  • 00:08:52.160 --> 00:08:55.230
  • And always remember to say thank you.
  • 00:08:55.240 --> 00:08:58.020
  • None of us does it perfectly,
  • 00:08:58.030 --> 00:09:00.040
  • but it's a routine and a practice
  • 00:09:00.050 --> 00:09:02.020
  • that we all need to cultivate in our lives.
  • 00:09:02.030 --> 00:09:04.260
  • So notice, there are three circles that we live in.
  • 00:09:04.270 --> 00:09:07.100
  • The first circle is the circle of worry.
  • 00:09:07.110 --> 00:09:10.120
  • What's in that circle? Nada, nothing.
  • 00:09:10.130 --> 00:09:14.130
  • "Be anxious for," what? "Nothing."
  • 00:09:14.140 --> 00:09:17.050
  • The second circle is the circle of prayer.
  • 00:09:17.060 --> 00:09:20.000
  • What are you supposed to pray for?
  • 00:09:20.010 --> 00:09:22.010
  • Everything.
  • 00:09:22.020 --> 00:09:23.200
  • And the third circle is the circle of thanksgiving,
  • 00:09:23.210 --> 00:09:26.180
  • and what's in that circle?
  • 00:09:26.190 --> 00:09:28.020
  • Anything.
  • 00:09:28.030 --> 00:09:30.000
  • Worry about nothing, pray about everything,
  • 00:09:30.010 --> 00:09:32.270
  • be thankful for anything,
  • 00:09:32.280 --> 00:09:35.260
  • and you will find that you are starting
  • 00:09:35.270 --> 00:09:37.280
  • to take a little bit of that anxiety
  • 00:09:37.290 --> 00:09:41.070
  • out of your life,
  • 00:09:41.080 --> 00:09:42.170
  • just by the first thing Paul tells you to do.
  • 00:09:42.180 --> 00:09:45.050
  • And let me encourage you, when you pray,
  • 00:09:45.060 --> 00:09:47.190
  • don't pray church prayers.
  • 00:09:47.200 --> 00:09:50.110
  • Don't pray sanitized prayers. Don't pray sanctified prayers.
  • 00:09:50.120 --> 00:09:56.200
  • Talk to your Father and tell him what you need.
  • 00:09:57.200 --> 00:10:01.150
  • Prayer is a conversation between you and God.
  • 00:10:01.160 --> 00:10:04.070
  • It isn't a religious thing. It's not a church thing.
  • 00:10:04.080 --> 00:10:06.280
  • It's your way of communicating with a Father in heaven
  • 00:10:06.290 --> 00:10:10.080
  • who loves you more than you will ever know.
  • 00:10:10.090 --> 00:10:12.150
  • Pray honestly and openly.
  • 00:10:12.160 --> 00:10:17.130
  • But notice, the problem is worry,
  • 00:10:17.140 --> 00:10:19.180
  • and the prescription is prayer,
  • 00:10:19.190 --> 00:10:21.040
  • but there's a third thing in this text,
  • 00:10:21.050 --> 00:10:23.130
  • and that's the program, and the program
  • 00:10:23.140 --> 00:10:25.170
  • is right thinking and right action.
  • 00:10:25.180 --> 00:10:27.270
  • Listen carefully: When anxious thoughts are removed by prayer,
  • 00:10:27.280 --> 00:10:32.130
  • you have to replace them with something.
  • 00:10:32.140 --> 00:10:34.210
  • How many of you know,
  • 00:10:34.220 --> 00:10:36.010
  • you don't get rid of your anxiety
  • 00:10:36.020 --> 00:10:37.190
  • by going around all day saying to yourself,
  • 00:10:37.200 --> 00:10:40.080
  • "I am not gonna worry as like I used to.
  • 00:10:40.090 --> 00:10:42.160
  • I'm not gonna worry today like I worried yesterday.
  • 00:10:42.170 --> 00:10:44.270
  • I'm not gonna be anxious, like--
  • 00:10:44.280 --> 00:10:46.190
  • I am going to conquer anxiety."
  • 00:10:46.200 --> 00:10:48.240
  • You know what happens when you do that?
  • 00:10:48.250 --> 00:10:50.090
  • You take your worry to a whole new level,
  • 00:10:50.100 --> 00:10:52.280
  • and you are now an expert in worrying.
  • 00:10:52.290 --> 00:10:56.080
  • So when you get rid of worry through prayer,
  • 00:10:56.090 --> 00:10:58.130
  • you have to replace it with something.
  • 00:10:58.140 --> 00:11:00.130
  • How do you--so I've cast all my burdens on the Lord.
  • 00:11:00.140 --> 00:11:04.230
  • Now what's next?
  • 00:11:04.240 --> 00:11:06.030
  • And Paul says, "Okay, let me give you
  • 00:11:06.040 --> 00:11:07.130
  • a follow-up program to your prayers."
  • 00:11:07.140 --> 00:11:10.070
  • Here's the first thing: Right thinking.
  • 00:11:10.080 --> 00:11:13.270
  • He says, to avoid anxiety, we must think proper thoughts.
  • 00:11:13.280 --> 00:11:17.160
  • Philippians 4:8, "Finally, brethren," he writes,
  • 00:11:17.170 --> 00:11:21.040
  • "whatever things are true, whatever things are noble,
  • 00:11:21.050 --> 00:11:24.180
  • whatever things are just, whatever things are pure,
  • 00:11:24.190 --> 00:11:27.280
  • whatever things are lovely,
  • 00:11:27.290 --> 00:11:29.290
  • whatever things are of a good report,
  • 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:31.220
  • if there's any virtue,
  • 00:11:31.230 --> 00:11:33.020
  • if there's anything praiseworthy,
  • 00:11:33.030 --> 00:11:35.000
  • meditate or think on these things."
  • 00:11:35.010 --> 00:11:39.030
  • Now, what Paul is saying is this:
  • 00:11:39.040 --> 00:11:40.200
  • What we think has a lot to do with how we function.
  • 00:11:40.210 --> 00:11:44.230
  • Paul tells us that there are certain things
  • 00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:46.220
  • you need to program your mind with,
  • 00:11:46.230 --> 00:11:48.220
  • certain things you need to think.
  • 00:11:48.230 --> 00:11:50.200
  • Now, he doesn't get into a lot of detailed here,
  • 00:11:50.210 --> 00:11:52.210
  • but he gives us six guidelines, and I'll tell you what,
  • 00:11:52.220 --> 00:11:55.180
  • if you go through these guidelines,
  • 00:11:55.190 --> 00:11:56.290
  • and we're just gonna touch on 'em today,
  • 00:11:57.000 --> 00:11:59.050
  • you will realize that there's a lot we can do
  • 00:11:59.060 --> 00:12:02.100
  • as God's people to make sure that we stay in charge
  • 00:12:02.110 --> 00:12:06.170
  • of what happens between our ears.
  • 00:12:06.180 --> 00:12:09.260
  • We don't take that very seriously.
  • 00:12:09.270 --> 00:12:11.240
  • We sort of allow that to just happen, don't we?
  • 00:12:11.250 --> 00:12:14.040
  • We're very passive about it,
  • 00:12:14.050 --> 00:12:16.010
  • but Paul tells us there's a way we can program our minds
  • 00:12:16.020 --> 00:12:20.080
  • so that we become the beautiful people
  • 00:12:20.090 --> 00:12:22.090
  • God wants us to be.
  • 00:12:22.100 --> 00:12:23.200
  • First of all, "Whatsoever things are true,"
  • 00:12:24.090 --> 00:12:28.110
  • "whatsoever things are true."
  • 00:12:28.120 --> 00:12:30.250
  • How many of you know that the inability to cope with truth
  • 00:12:30.260 --> 00:12:33.210
  • is a form of mental illness?
  • 00:12:33.220 --> 00:12:36.200
  • When you learn to live with things that are not true,
  • 00:12:36.210 --> 00:12:40.040
  • and function as if your non-truth was truth,
  • 00:12:40.050 --> 00:12:43.240
  • you are in deep trouble and headed toward an abyss
  • 00:12:43.250 --> 00:12:47.150
  • from which it is mostly impossible to recover.
  • 00:12:47.160 --> 00:12:51.090
  • Truth is the touchstone of our lives,
  • 00:12:51.100 --> 00:12:54.000
  • and we need to learn
  • 00:12:54.010 --> 00:12:55.190
  • to think about those things which are true.
  • 00:12:55.200 --> 00:12:58.070
  • What things are true?
  • 00:12:58.080 --> 00:12:59.170
  • Jesus Christ said,
  • 00:12:59.180 --> 00:13:01.000
  • "I am the way, the truth, and the life."
  • 00:13:01.010 --> 00:13:03.220
  • This book is truth.
  • 00:13:03.230 --> 00:13:05.190
  • Truth in our culture today
  • 00:13:05.200 --> 00:13:07.020
  • is that which corresponds with reality,
  • 00:13:07.030 --> 00:13:09.160
  • but truth according to God
  • 00:13:09.170 --> 00:13:10.290
  • is that which corresponds with his Word.
  • 00:13:11.000 --> 00:13:13.100
  • Think about true things.
  • 00:13:13.110 --> 00:13:15.120
  • Get rid of all of the false narratives
  • 00:13:15.130 --> 00:13:18.020
  • that are so prevalent today, and think things that are true.
  • 00:13:18.030 --> 00:13:22.070
  • Guideline number two, "whatever things are noble,"
  • 00:13:22.080 --> 00:13:26.280
  • we are to think on things that are honorable,
  • 00:13:26.290 --> 00:13:30.060
  • things that claim respect.
  • 00:13:30.070 --> 00:13:32.120
  • If it is true that we externalize our thoughts,
  • 00:13:32.130 --> 00:13:35.140
  • then honorable people
  • 00:13:35.150 --> 00:13:37.200
  • are the result of honorable thoughts.
  • 00:13:37.210 --> 00:13:40.260
  • Isn't that a great idea,
  • 00:13:40.270 --> 00:13:43.010
  • to think about things that are noble?
  • 00:13:43.020 --> 00:13:45.070
  • How many of you know there's a lot of stuff
  • 00:13:45.080 --> 00:13:46.230
  • that we get messed up with in our world today,
  • 00:13:46.240 --> 00:13:49.160
  • that's not very noble?
  • 00:13:49.170 --> 00:13:51.220
  • Number three, "whatever things are just,"
  • 00:13:51.230 --> 00:13:55.040
  • that's a general term for things that are righteous
  • 00:13:55.050 --> 00:13:58.050
  • by both divine and human standards.
  • 00:13:58.060 --> 00:14:01.090
  • Number four, "whatever things are pure."
  • 00:14:01.100 --> 00:14:05.080
  • Now, this was written by Paul, long before the Internet,
  • 00:14:05.090 --> 00:14:08.020
  • so it wasn't nearly the problem in those days
  • 00:14:08.030 --> 00:14:10.170
  • than it is in our day, but purity is a major, major war
  • 00:14:10.180 --> 00:14:15.120
  • for many men in our culture today.
  • 00:14:15.130 --> 00:14:18.230
  • The Bible says, if you don't wanna be filled
  • 00:14:18.240 --> 00:14:20.270
  • with stress and anxiety and worry,
  • 00:14:20.280 --> 00:14:23.150
  • get purity in your mind.
  • 00:14:23.160 --> 00:14:26.020
  • Get rid of those things that will corrupt your thinking.
  • 00:14:26.030 --> 00:14:29.010
  • Stay off of the late-night Internet.
  • 00:14:29.020 --> 00:14:31.110
  • Discipline yourself to think those things which are pure.
  • 00:14:31.120 --> 00:14:35.190
  • You cannot lift your mind
  • 00:14:35.200 --> 00:14:38.090
  • and let it open to those things which are impure
  • 00:14:38.100 --> 00:14:40.250
  • and live a Christian life that has any victory.
  • 00:14:40.260 --> 00:14:43.020
  • It will totally destroy you.
  • 00:14:43.030 --> 00:14:44.210
  • It will undercut everything you do.
  • 00:14:44.220 --> 00:14:47.240
  • Whatever you do, if you're gonna be ruthless about anything,
  • 00:14:47.250 --> 00:14:50.060
  • be ruthless about that.
  • 00:14:50.070 --> 00:14:52.100
  • Tear the Internet connection out of the wall.
  • 00:14:52.110 --> 00:14:55.200
  • Do whatever--you know, I remember seein' a commercial
  • 00:14:55.210 --> 00:14:57.100
  • where they threw a computer out the window.
  • 00:14:57.110 --> 00:14:59.020
  • That may not be a bad thought for some folks.
  • 00:14:59.030 --> 00:15:01.170
  • Guideline number five is "whatever things are lovely."
  • 00:15:03.210 --> 00:15:07.190
  • I like that word, don't you?
  • 00:15:07.200 --> 00:15:09.010
  • Say that word with me, "lovely, lovely."
  • 00:15:09.020 --> 00:15:11.160
  • Do you know that it's only in the Bible one time,
  • 00:15:11.170 --> 00:15:13.290
  • and it's right here in Philippines 4?
  • 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:17.160
  • "Lovely" is a word that is often found
  • 00:15:17.170 --> 00:15:20.020
  • in the New Testament times, not in the Bible,
  • 00:15:20.030 --> 00:15:23.000
  • but sometimes it was in an epitaph,
  • 00:15:23.010 --> 00:15:25.080
  • sometimes it was in a writing.
  • 00:15:25.090 --> 00:15:27.120
  • It was a term that could be used to describe fine art or music.
  • 00:15:27.130 --> 00:15:31.240
  • A thorough reading of 1 Corinthians 13,
  • 00:15:31.250 --> 00:15:34.120
  • will give you some ideas of what "lovely" is.
  • 00:15:34.130 --> 00:15:37.150
  • It's the opposite of the confusion and disorder
  • 00:15:37.160 --> 00:15:40.130
  • that so often rules in our day.
  • 00:15:40.140 --> 00:15:43.160
  • What a great thing to think about things that are lovely.
  • 00:15:43.170 --> 00:15:46.190
  • Lift your standard of thought.
  • 00:15:46.200 --> 00:15:49.020
  • Get out of the doldrums,
  • 00:15:49.030 --> 00:15:50.250
  • and get your standard of thought up here.
  • 00:15:50.260 --> 00:15:53.240
  • And, finally, number six,
  • 00:15:53.250 --> 00:15:55.180
  • "whatever things are of a good report."
  • 00:15:55.190 --> 00:15:58.240
  • That means "fair speaking"
  • 00:15:58.250 --> 00:16:00.180
  • is literally what the words mean.
  • 00:16:00.190 --> 00:16:01.280
  • It describes what is appealing.
  • 00:16:01.290 --> 00:16:04.060
  • Listening to such reports builds you up.
  • 00:16:04.070 --> 00:16:06.220
  • Take care to what you listen to.
  • 00:16:06.230 --> 00:16:08.140
  • Have you ever heard people come up and say,
  • 00:16:08.150 --> 00:16:09.240
  • "Have you heard what's goin' on with," someone,
  • 00:16:09.250 --> 00:16:11.130
  • and you know you're about to get a bad report?
  • 00:16:11.140 --> 00:16:14.280
  • Most often, you don't wanna do that.
  • 00:16:14.290 --> 00:16:16.180
  • You don't wanna hear that.
  • 00:16:16.190 --> 00:16:18.160
  • We're always open to bad reports.
  • 00:16:18.170 --> 00:16:20.050
  • The Bible says, "Whatever things are of a good report."
  • 00:16:20.060 --> 00:16:23.080
  • I love it when people come,
  • 00:16:23.090 --> 00:16:24.180
  • "Let me tell you what's happened,"
  • 00:16:24.190 --> 00:16:25.280
  • and they tell you all the good things
  • 00:16:25.290 --> 00:16:27.080
  • that are happening.
  • 00:16:27.090 --> 00:16:28.180
  • I don't need anybody to fill my mind up
  • 00:16:28.190 --> 00:16:29.280
  • with negative things.
  • 00:16:29.290 --> 00:16:31.080
  • So the Bible says, "Take control of the gate of your mind"
  • 00:16:31.090 --> 00:16:34.230
  • because that's where you can do a lot of good
  • 00:16:34.240 --> 00:16:38.090
  • when it comes to what you think about.
  • 00:16:38.100 --> 00:16:40.140
  • What you think about, if it's not right,
  • 00:16:40.150 --> 00:16:42.110
  • will be what you worry about.
  • 00:16:42.120 --> 00:16:45.070
  • "It's just in my head, Pastor."
  • 00:16:45.080 --> 00:16:46.220
  • No, if it's in your head, you let it in your head.
  • 00:16:46.230 --> 00:16:49.130
  • You have control over your thoughts,
  • 00:16:49.140 --> 00:16:53.090
  • and your thoughts come
  • 00:16:53.100 --> 00:16:55.100
  • from the places you go and the things you do,
  • 00:16:55.110 --> 00:16:59.020
  • and I just wanna remind you that Isaiah 26, verse 3, says,
  • 00:16:59.030 --> 00:17:04.280
  • "You will keep him in perfect peace,
  • 00:17:04.290 --> 00:17:07.210
  • whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you."
  • 00:17:07.220 --> 00:17:14.230
  • Program your mind with positive things,
  • 00:17:14.240 --> 00:17:18.090
  • and you will take another step
  • 00:17:18.100 --> 00:17:20.100
  • toward avoiding worry in your life.
  • 00:17:20.110 --> 00:17:22.200
  • And then here's the second part of that plan:
  • 00:17:22.210 --> 00:17:25.250
  • To avoid anxiety, we must think proper thoughts,
  • 00:17:25.260 --> 00:17:28.170
  • and to avoid anxiety, we must do proper things.
  • 00:17:28.180 --> 00:17:31.180
  • Philippians 4:9, "The things which you have learned
  • 00:17:32.210 --> 00:17:35.050
  • and received and heard and seen in me, these do."
  • 00:17:35.060 --> 00:17:39.090
  • I remember that there was once a highway in Canada that read,
  • 00:17:39.100 --> 00:17:43.090
  • "Take care which route you choose.
  • 00:17:43.100 --> 00:17:45.130
  • You will be in it for the next 25 miles."
  • 00:17:45.140 --> 00:17:48.290
  • Our thoughts make the routes that our actions follow.
  • 00:17:49.000 --> 00:17:53.080
  • Our thinking issues in our doing.
  • 00:17:53.090 --> 00:17:55.150
  • We ponder what we end up practicing.
  • 00:17:55.160 --> 00:17:58.260
  • Our learning determines our living.
  • 00:17:58.270 --> 00:18:02.220
  • And Paul says,
  • 00:18:02.230 --> 00:18:04.020
  • "Not only should you think the right thoughts,
  • 00:18:04.030 --> 00:18:05.270
  • you should do the right things."
  • 00:18:05.280 --> 00:18:08.050
  • He instructs them to practice,
  • 00:18:08.060 --> 00:18:09.200
  • "The things," notice this, "which you have learned
  • 00:18:09.210 --> 00:18:13.060
  • and received and heard and seen in me," he said,
  • 00:18:13.070 --> 00:18:17.100
  • "these things you watch me do,
  • 00:18:17.110 --> 00:18:19.050
  • I'm the model here, these things, do."
  • 00:18:19.060 --> 00:18:23.130
  • Well, you say, "Pastor Jeremiah,
  • 00:18:23.140 --> 00:18:24.230
  • what things is he talkin' about?"
  • 00:18:24.240 --> 00:18:26.290
  • You could go through all of the book of Acts.
  • 00:18:27.000 --> 00:18:28.190
  • You could take the whole life of Paul
  • 00:18:28.200 --> 00:18:30.210
  • and script it all out and have hundreds of things
  • 00:18:30.220 --> 00:18:33.250
  • that Paul said and that he did
  • 00:18:33.260 --> 00:18:36.010
  • and that he encouraged people to follow,
  • 00:18:36.020 --> 00:18:37.250
  • but let's just take Philippines.
  • 00:18:37.260 --> 00:18:39.110
  • Let's just take
  • 00:18:39.120 --> 00:18:40.210
  • the first three chapters of Philippians.
  • 00:18:40.220 --> 00:18:42.200
  • Here's what we learn about Paul that he tells us we are to do
  • 00:18:42.210 --> 00:18:48.060
  • in three chapters of one of his letters.
  • 00:18:48.070 --> 00:18:50.210
  • Hang on.
  • 00:18:50.220 --> 00:18:52.010
  • I'm gonna fly through this on the screen.
  • 00:18:52.020 --> 00:18:54.220
  • "Loving more, having greater discernment,
  • 00:18:54.230 --> 00:18:57.170
  • being sincere and without offense,
  • 00:18:57.180 --> 00:18:59.090
  • being filled with the fruits of righteousness,
  • 00:18:59.100 --> 00:19:01.050
  • having conduct worthy of the Gospel,
  • 00:19:01.060 --> 00:19:03.090
  • standing fast in one spirit,
  • 00:19:03.100 --> 00:19:05.060
  • striving together for the Gospel,
  • 00:19:05.070 --> 00:19:07.030
  • being like-minded of one accord,
  • 00:19:07.040 --> 00:19:09.030
  • esteeming others better than yourself,
  • 00:19:09.040 --> 00:19:10.270
  • working out your own salvation in fear and trembling,
  • 00:19:10.280 --> 00:19:13.140
  • doing all things without complaining and disputing,
  • 00:19:13.150 --> 00:19:15.250
  • holding fast the word of life, looking out for false teachers,"
  • 00:19:15.260 --> 00:19:19.240
  • verse 3 of chapter 3, and that's just three chapters about Paul.
  • 00:19:19.250 --> 00:19:24.120
  • What is he saying?
  • 00:19:24.130 --> 00:19:26.150
  • What Paul is saying is this: "You have the opportunity
  • 00:19:26.160 --> 00:19:30.110
  • to carefully evaluate what the Bible says,
  • 00:19:30.120 --> 00:19:33.000
  • but if you wanna translate it into flesh and blood,
  • 00:19:33.010 --> 00:19:36.010
  • here's how I've lived my life."
  • 00:19:36.020 --> 00:19:38.100
  • I would never say that.
  • 00:19:38.110 --> 00:19:39.200
  • I could never say that, but I'm not the apostle Paul.
  • 00:19:39.210 --> 00:19:42.060
  • Under the inspiration of the Scripture, Paul said,
  • 00:19:42.070 --> 00:19:44.180
  • "I am a living example
  • 00:19:44.190 --> 00:19:46.140
  • of how you are to follow Christ."
  • 00:19:46.150 --> 00:19:49.150
  • Here's what you do:
  • 00:19:49.160 --> 00:19:50.270
  • Study his life, learn what he's doing,
  • 00:19:50.280 --> 00:19:52.280
  • and do what he does.
  • 00:19:52.290 --> 00:19:54.240
  • Paul's life matched his words.
  • 00:19:54.250 --> 00:19:58.230
  • That's the kind of people, as leaders,
  • 00:19:58.240 --> 00:20:00.180
  • we should all aspire to be.
  • 00:20:00.190 --> 00:20:02.230
  • Great teachers follow their own teaching.
  • 00:20:02.240 --> 00:20:06.270
  • You can't be a great teacher if you don't live the truth.
  • 00:20:06.280 --> 00:20:10.060
  • If I stood up here and preach to you every week
  • 00:20:10.070 --> 00:20:12.220
  • out of the Word of God
  • 00:20:12.230 --> 00:20:14.050
  • and left a trail behind me of things that violated
  • 00:20:14.060 --> 00:20:16.280
  • all the principles I taught, I would be useless.
  • 00:20:16.290 --> 00:20:19.210
  • In fact, I would be worse than useless.
  • 00:20:19.220 --> 00:20:22.050
  • I would be a negative example of the things
  • 00:20:22.060 --> 00:20:25.050
  • that God has called us to do.
  • 00:20:25.060 --> 00:20:26.280
  • I can't be perfect, neither can anyone else,
  • 00:20:26.290 --> 00:20:29.100
  • but I should aspire to the truth
  • 00:20:29.110 --> 00:20:31.040
  • with the highest evidence in my life
  • 00:20:31.050 --> 00:20:34.070
  • that I believe the things that we talk about.
  • 00:20:34.080 --> 00:20:37.040
  • Paul said, "The things you have heard,
  • 00:20:37.050 --> 00:20:39.250
  • the things you have received,
  • 00:20:39.260 --> 00:20:41.110
  • the things you have seen in me, these things do."
  • 00:20:41.120 --> 00:20:45.190
  • Now, here's the good part of all of this:
  • 00:20:45.200 --> 00:20:47.230
  • Do you want a guarantee?
  • 00:20:47.240 --> 00:20:50.080
  • You go to the doctor, and you say,
  • 00:20:50.090 --> 00:20:51.180
  • "I've got this problem."
  • 00:20:51.190 --> 00:20:53.120
  • Most often, they won't say to you,
  • 00:20:53.130 --> 00:20:55.000
  • "Okay, take this, and I promise you,
  • 00:20:55.010 --> 00:20:57.200
  • you will get better."
  • 00:20:57.210 --> 00:20:59.030
  • But Paul isn't an average doctor.
  • 00:20:59.040 --> 00:21:01.050
  • Paul is saying, "If you do what I tell you to do,
  • 00:21:01.060 --> 00:21:04.270
  • you will be victorious over worry."
  • 00:21:04.280 --> 00:21:08.160
  • You say, "Where is that?" Okay, here we go.
  • 00:21:08.170 --> 00:21:10.160
  • God's promise of peace, verse 7, "and the peace of God,
  • 00:21:10.170 --> 00:21:15.080
  • which surpasses all understanding,
  • 00:21:15.090 --> 00:21:18.070
  • will guard your hearts and your minds
  • 00:21:18.080 --> 00:21:20.120
  • through Christ Jesus,
  • 00:21:20.130 --> 00:21:22.040
  • and the God of peace will be with you."
  • 00:21:22.050 --> 00:21:24.260
  • If you pray, if you program your thoughts,
  • 00:21:24.270 --> 00:21:27.270
  • if you do what the Word of God says for you to do,
  • 00:21:27.280 --> 00:21:30.070
  • and if you do that, "the peace of God,
  • 00:21:30.080 --> 00:21:33.220
  • which surpasses all understanding,
  • 00:21:33.230 --> 00:21:36.050
  • will guard your heart."
  • 00:21:36.060 --> 00:21:37.220
  • Notice God's protection:
  • 00:21:37.230 --> 00:21:39.160
  • It says it will guard your heart.
  • 00:21:39.170 --> 00:21:41.030
  • This is a tremendous Scripture,
  • 00:21:41.040 --> 00:21:42.280
  • one of the best in the Word of God.
  • 00:21:42.290 --> 00:21:44.240
  • It says, when you do these things,
  • 00:21:44.250 --> 00:21:46.130
  • God will send his garrison, his armed guard,
  • 00:21:46.140 --> 00:21:50.290
  • to stand in front of your heart's door
  • 00:21:51.000 --> 00:21:53.080
  • so that it won't let any of these bad things
  • 00:21:53.090 --> 00:21:55.160
  • into your heart that will cause you to worry.
  • 00:21:55.170 --> 00:21:57.230
  • If you do these things,
  • 00:21:57.240 --> 00:21:59.070
  • God promises to garrison your heart with his peace.
  • 00:21:59.080 --> 00:22:02.200
  • Notice how he describes this peace:
  • 00:22:02.210 --> 00:22:05.010
  • "And the peace of God,
  • 00:22:05.020 --> 00:22:06.200
  • which surpasses all understanding."
  • 00:22:06.210 --> 00:22:10.010
  • How many of you know that kind of peace?
  • 00:22:10.020 --> 00:22:12.060
  • You've gone through something
  • 00:22:12.070 --> 00:22:13.200
  • that you'd never dreamed you'd ever go through,
  • 00:22:13.210 --> 00:22:15.240
  • and God has intervened in your life
  • 00:22:15.250 --> 00:22:18.060
  • and given you strength,
  • 00:22:18.070 --> 00:22:19.260
  • and you try to explain it to somebody,
  • 00:22:19.270 --> 00:22:21.220
  • especially somebody who's not a Christian,
  • 00:22:21.230 --> 00:22:24.030
  • and they look at you like they have no idea
  • 00:22:24.040 --> 00:22:26.070
  • what you're talkin' about.
  • 00:22:26.080 --> 00:22:27.280
  • How could anybody have peace in the midst of that?
  • 00:22:27.290 --> 00:22:30.230
  • Well, you can't explain it
  • 00:22:30.240 --> 00:22:32.120
  • because it's a peace that surpasses all understanding.
  • 00:22:32.130 --> 00:22:35.210
  • You have to experience it to know it.
  • 00:22:35.220 --> 00:22:38.090
  • Notice, not only does God give you his protection,
  • 00:22:38.100 --> 00:22:41.010
  • he goes further than that.
  • 00:22:41.020 --> 00:22:43.050
  • He gives you his presence.
  • 00:22:43.060 --> 00:22:45.190
  • How many of you know there's two things here?
  • 00:22:45.200 --> 00:22:47.030
  • There's the peace of God that garrisons your heart.
  • 00:22:47.040 --> 00:22:50.130
  • That's protection.
  • 00:22:50.140 --> 00:22:51.250
  • But there's the God of peace who comes to live within your heart.
  • 00:22:51.260 --> 00:22:55.010
  • That's even better.
  • 00:22:55.020 --> 00:22:56.150
  • I'd rather have the God of peace any day than the peace of God
  • 00:22:56.160 --> 00:22:59.120
  • 'cause, when you get the God of peace,
  • 00:22:59.130 --> 00:23:01.010
  • you can get the peace of God, amen?
  • 00:23:01.020 --> 00:23:04.190
  • So the Bible says that, when you do these things,
  • 00:23:04.200 --> 00:23:07.040
  • God will come,
  • 00:23:07.050 --> 00:23:08.220
  • and he will have a very special presence in your life.
  • 00:23:08.230 --> 00:23:11.020
  • You will get the presence of God in your life.
  • 00:23:11.030 --> 00:23:13.250
  • He will be with you.
  • 00:23:13.260 --> 00:23:15.120
  • His presence will be your comfort and encouragement.
  • 00:23:15.130 --> 00:23:17.220
  • When problems come, God will be with you.
  • 00:23:17.230 --> 00:23:22.260
  • God draws near to us in times of desperate need
  • 00:23:22.270 --> 00:23:27.180
  • in ways that we can't understand.
  • 00:23:27.190 --> 00:23:29.290
  • How is it that God could be nearer to me today
  • 00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:32.150
  • than he was before all this happened?
  • 00:23:32.160 --> 00:23:34.130
  • It's not really possible because God is never
  • 00:23:34.140 --> 00:23:36.230
  • any more near to us at one time than at the other,
  • 00:23:36.240 --> 00:23:40.060
  • but when we go through these difficult times,
  • 00:23:40.070 --> 00:23:43.020
  • we sense his presence like never before,
  • 00:23:43.030 --> 00:23:46.090
  • and so many times, people have come to me and said,
  • 00:23:46.100 --> 00:23:48.050
  • "Pastor, when I went through that,
  • 00:23:48.060 --> 00:23:49.250
  • if God hadn't been with me,
  • 00:23:49.260 --> 00:23:51.050
  • I don't know what I would've done,"
  • 00:23:51.060 --> 00:23:52.160
  • or have you had people say,
  • 00:23:52.170 --> 00:23:53.260
  • "How do people who don't know the Lord
  • 00:23:53.270 --> 00:23:55.060
  • go through times like this?"
  • 00:23:55.070 --> 00:23:57.110
  • The Bible says, when we put our trust in him,
  • 00:23:57.120 --> 00:24:00.130
  • when we pray, when we take the Word of God seriously,
  • 00:24:00.140 --> 00:24:04.010
  • when we determine we're gonna control
  • 00:24:04.020 --> 00:24:05.210
  • what enters our mind, the Bible says
  • 00:24:05.220 --> 00:24:07.230
  • God not only garrisons our heart with the peace of God,
  • 00:24:07.240 --> 00:24:11.170
  • but he enters our heart with the presence of God,
  • 00:24:11.180 --> 00:24:14.260
  • and that is sufficient to help us.
  • 00:24:14.270 --> 00:24:18.010
  • And, finally, God's peace, he calls it the "peace of God,
  • 00:24:18.020 --> 00:24:22.120
  • which surpasses all understanding."
  • 00:24:22.130 --> 00:24:26.020
  • So my question to you today
  • 00:24:26.030 --> 00:24:27.170
  • is do you have that peace in your heart?
  • 00:24:27.180 --> 00:24:29.020
  • Do you have that peace workin' for you?
  • 00:24:29.030 --> 00:24:31.030
  • We do a little better with it sometimes than others,
  • 00:24:31.040 --> 00:24:33.050
  • but we should be growing in our ability
  • 00:24:33.060 --> 00:24:35.120
  • to turn over our cares to the Lord.
  • 00:24:35.130 --> 00:24:38.010
  • "Cast your care upon him, for he cares for you."
  • 00:24:38.020 --> 00:24:42.200
  • Let me tell you, you can choose to live your life
  • 00:24:42.210 --> 00:24:44.290
  • worried to death,
  • 00:24:45.000 --> 00:24:46.250
  • or you can choose to follow God's principles
  • 00:24:46.260 --> 00:24:49.290
  • and live above worry
  • 00:24:50.000 --> 00:24:52.060
  • and have the joy of the Lord in your heart.
  • 00:24:52.070 --> 00:24:54.180
  • I pray that you will do the latter and let God control.
  • 00:24:54.190 --> 00:24:59.140
  • 00:25:00.080 --> 00:25:06.000
  • female announcer: Thank you for watching "Turning Point."
