  • 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:34.030
  • Dr. Jeremiah sat down with Sheila Walsh
  • 00:01:34.040 --> 00:01:36.110
  • to be interviewed about the abundant life God has for each
  • 00:01:36.120 --> 00:01:38.290

  • 00:01:48.150 --> 00:01:53.110
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:01:55.120 --> 00:02:00.020
  • Sheila Walsh: Hello and welcome.
  • 00:02:00.030 --> 00:02:02.240
  • Let me ask you a question.
  • 00:02:02.250 --> 00:02:04.230
  • How would you describe your life?
  • 00:02:04.240 --> 00:02:07.290
  • Good?
  • 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:09.250
  • Great?
  • 00:02:09.260 --> 00:02:11.110
  • How about amazing?
  • 00:02:11.120 --> 00:02:13.220
  • If you read the New Testament it becomes very evident that God's
  • 00:02:13.230 --> 00:02:16.210
  • intention for his children is that they not only live a good
  • 00:02:16.220 --> 00:02:20.040
  • and godly life but a life full of meaning.
  • 00:02:20.050 --> 00:02:24.160
  • My good friend, Dr. David Jeremiah,
  • 00:02:24.170 --> 00:02:26.090
  • is greatly burdened for people who live below the
  • 00:02:26.100 --> 00:02:29.150
  • joy and fulfillment God intends.
  • 00:02:29.160 --> 00:02:32.110
  • He believes an unfulfilled life is no way to exist and it was
  • 00:02:32.120 --> 00:02:37.010
  • this concern that led him to write, "A Life Beyond Amazing:
  • 00:02:37.020 --> 00:02:41.280
  • 9 Decisions That Will Transform Your Life Today."
  • 00:02:41.290 --> 00:02:47.020
  • In his book and subsequent teaching series, he points us
  • 00:02:47.030 --> 00:02:50.170
  • to Scripture promising us a life of blessings beyond our
  • 00:02:50.180 --> 00:02:54.050
  • comprehension, a life beyond what we think might be possible.
  • 00:02:54.060 --> 00:03:00.090
  • He says a life beyond amazing doesn't have to start
  • 00:03:00.100 --> 00:03:03.100
  • when we step into heaven.
  • 00:03:03.110 --> 00:03:05.210
  • A life beyond amazing can be lived right here on earth.
  • 00:03:05.220 --> 00:03:10.070
  • So with that, let's talk to Dr. Jeremiah about how we can
  • 00:03:10.080 --> 00:03:13.150
  • live a life beyond amazing.
  • 00:03:13.160 --> 00:03:16.110
  • Please join me in welcoming to the stage pastor, author,
  • 00:03:16.120 --> 00:03:20.000
  • and beloved Bible teacher, Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:03:20.010 --> 00:03:26.140
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:03:26.150 --> 00:03:29.140
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Thank you. That's very nice.
  • 00:03:29.150 --> 00:03:31.010
  • Thank you.
  • 00:03:31.020 --> 00:03:33.120
  • Sheila: So in just a sentence or two can you give us a kind of
  • 00:03:33.130 --> 00:03:36.290
  • overarching idea of this new book, "A Life Beyond Amazing"?
  • 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:42.160
  • Dr. Jeremiah: If there ever was a time to revisit the
  • 00:03:42.170 --> 00:03:46.120
  • subject of character, this would be the time because
  • 00:03:46.130 --> 00:03:50.040
  • that's what's missing in our culture today.
  • 00:03:50.050 --> 00:03:52.210
  • It seems like every year we see that almost kind of draining out
  • 00:03:52.220 --> 00:03:56.020
  • of our country and it's so necessary.
  • 00:03:56.030 --> 00:03:59.180
  • So we decided to write a book
  • 00:03:59.190 --> 00:04:01.220
  • on character and one of the publishers said,
  • 00:04:01.230 --> 00:04:06.020
  • "Well, how are we gonna decide what to write on?
  • 00:04:06.030 --> 00:04:09.040
  • I mean, there's a lot in the Bible about character.
  • 00:04:09.050 --> 00:04:11.040
  • What are we gonna write?
  • 00:04:11.050 --> 00:04:12.010
  • There's so much."
  • 00:04:12.020 --> 00:04:13.140
  • And I said, "We'll have to think about that."
  • 00:04:13.150 --> 00:04:15.040
  • And we went home and the next day I realized, "We don't have
  • 00:04:15.050 --> 00:04:18.040
  • to think about that.
  • 00:04:18.050 --> 00:04:19.110
  • God's already told us what the nine characteristics of a--
  • 00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:23.150
  • God's person looks like.
  • 00:04:23.160 --> 00:04:25.000
  • And when God fills a person with his Spirit and that person
  • 00:04:25.010 --> 00:04:28.050
  • is fully controlled by the Spirit of God the Scripture says
  • 00:04:28.060 --> 00:04:32.190
  • that's what they look like.
  • 00:04:32.200 --> 00:04:34.120
  • And those nine characteristics became the core of the book.
  • 00:04:34.130 --> 00:04:37.230
  • Sheila: In your over 50 years of ministry, are there certain
  • 00:04:37.240 --> 00:04:41.030
  • key things that you've seen that actually enable the body
  • 00:04:41.040 --> 00:04:43.250
  • of Christ to make genuine transformation?
  • 00:04:43.260 --> 00:04:46.150
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, the only thing I know that does that,
  • 00:04:46.160 --> 00:04:48.190
  • Sheila, is the Word of God accompanied by
  • 00:04:48.200 --> 00:04:50.270
  • the Spirit of God is what makes people change.
  • 00:04:50.280 --> 00:04:54.040
  • Sheila: Now, I love the subtitle: "9 Decisions
  • 00:04:54.050 --> 00:04:57.110
  • That Will Transform Your Life."
  • 00:04:57.120 --> 00:04:58.240
  • Why did you choose the word "decisions"?
  • 00:04:58.250 --> 00:05:01.000
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, because it really is a decision.
  • 00:05:01.010 --> 00:05:03.020
  • If you're gonna get into this thing and really
  • 00:05:03.030 --> 00:05:05.020
  • get serious about it, you've gotta decide to do it.
  • 00:05:05.030 --> 00:05:06.270
  • It's not gonna just morph into your life.
  • 00:05:06.280 --> 00:05:08.290
  • Doesn't--I mean, if somebody put the Bible under your pillow at
  • 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:11.200
  • night, you don't wake up spiritual the next day.
  • 00:05:11.210 --> 00:05:14.040
  • Yeah, right.
  • 00:05:14.050 --> 00:05:15.150
  • It's different than that.
  • 00:05:15.160 --> 00:05:17.010
  • Sheila: Okay, so let's dive in.
  • 00:05:17.020 --> 00:05:18.170
  • Nine decisions.
  • 00:05:18.180 --> 00:05:19.190
  • And the first one is a life of love.
  • 00:05:19.200 --> 00:05:22.030
  • And I want to quote a line from your book 'cause this
  • 00:05:22.040 --> 00:05:24.040
  • is so good.
  • 00:05:24.050 --> 00:05:25.140
  • You write of a teenager who was asked what she thought love
  • 00:05:25.150 --> 00:05:27.200
  • was and she answered: "Love is a feeling
  • 00:05:27.210 --> 00:05:30.170
  • you feel when you feel that what you feel is a feeling
  • 00:05:30.180 --> 00:05:33.000
  • you've never felt before."
  • 00:05:33.010 --> 00:05:35.010
  • [audience laughing]
  • 00:05:35.130 --> 00:05:37.070
  • That's so profound.
  • 00:05:37.080 --> 00:05:38.250
  • Dr. Jeremiah: It is, yes.
  • 00:05:38.260 --> 00:05:40.030
  • Sheila: But honestly, that's a pretty typical description
  • 00:05:40.040 --> 00:05:41.260
  • of a lot of our pop culture.
  • 00:05:41.270 --> 00:05:44.160
  • But how does God's Word define a life of love?
  • 00:05:44.170 --> 00:05:47.150
  • Dr. Jeremiah: That's one of the great battles.
  • 00:05:47.160 --> 00:05:48.230
  • I'm glad that's the first chapter because it sets the tone
  • 00:05:48.240 --> 00:05:50.270
  • for everything else.
  • 00:05:50.280 --> 00:05:52.030
  • The whole concept of love is what's at stake in our cultural
  • 00:05:52.040 --> 00:05:56.060
  • discussion today.
  • 00:05:56.070 --> 00:05:58.090
  • The world says love is something that makes me happy, something
  • 00:05:58.100 --> 00:06:02.110
  • that fulfills me, something that makes it possible for me to get
  • 00:06:02.120 --> 00:06:06.260
  • my needs met which, by the way, has sort of filtered
  • 00:06:06.270 --> 00:06:09.180
  • into the church.
  • 00:06:09.190 --> 00:06:10.190
  • Have you ever heard anybody say, "I'm not going to
  • 00:06:10.200 --> 00:06:12.150
  • that church anymore 'cause I don't get my needs met"?
  • 00:06:12.160 --> 00:06:15.280
  • And that's so not what the Bible's about, because the
  • 00:06:15.290 --> 00:06:20.100
  • love of the Bible is not about getting your needs met
  • 00:06:20.110 --> 00:06:23.150
  • but by the Spirit of God filling you up.
  • 00:06:23.160 --> 00:06:26.100
  • You help to meet the needs of other people.
  • 00:06:26.110 --> 00:06:28.140
  • And when you get to what love is, really,
  • 00:06:28.150 --> 00:06:30.260
  • love isn't a feeling.
  • 00:06:30.270 --> 00:06:32.140
  • Love isn't a feeling.
  • 00:06:32.150 --> 00:06:33.180
  • Even though that young girl thought it was.
  • 00:06:33.190 --> 00:06:34.280
  • Love is an action.
  • 00:06:34.290 --> 00:06:37.000
  • Love is what you do.
  • 00:06:37.010 --> 00:06:38.230
  • It's not how you feel.
  • 00:06:38.240 --> 00:06:40.010
  • And, obviously, when you do what you're supposed to do, a lot of
  • 00:06:40.020 --> 00:06:42.120
  • times the feelings will follow.
  • 00:06:42.130 --> 00:06:44.020
  • But you can't let feelings lead because they'll lead you
  • 00:06:44.030 --> 00:06:46.070
  • in the wrong direction.
  • 00:06:46.080 --> 00:06:47.270
  • Sheila: What do you think happens when we try
  • 00:06:47.280 --> 00:06:49.120
  • to love people before we understand the love of God?
  • 00:06:49.130 --> 00:06:53.110
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, it doesn't work very well,
  • 00:06:53.120 --> 00:06:55.030
  • and we get into a competition, you know.
  • 00:06:55.040 --> 00:06:57.210
  • "If you do this for me, I'll do that for you."
  • 00:06:57.220 --> 00:06:59.140
  • So, we kind of go back and forth and nothing ever gets resolved
  • 00:06:59.150 --> 00:07:02.220
  • and there's no real sense of love at all.
  • 00:07:02.230 --> 00:07:05.150
  • Sheila: Okay, I want to move on to chapter 2,
  • 00:07:05.160 --> 00:07:07.220
  • the decision is "A Life of Joy."
  • 00:07:07.230 --> 00:07:10.000
  • Now, we live in a culture that is going through a lot
  • 00:07:10.010 --> 00:07:13.010
  • of trauma, and I'm wondering if people think,
  • 00:07:13.020 --> 00:07:15.210
  • "Is God really joyful?"
  • 00:07:15.220 --> 00:07:17.160
  • Is that a word you associate with God?
  • 00:07:17.170 --> 00:07:20.000
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I don't have to associate it because God
  • 00:07:20.010 --> 00:07:21.250
  • tells us in his book that he's--you know, "In his presence
  • 00:07:21.260 --> 00:07:24.260
  • is the fulfillment of joy."
  • 00:07:24.270 --> 00:07:27.030
  • I know it's really hard for people because most of us have
  • 00:07:27.040 --> 00:07:29.060
  • the idea that God is this sober person sitting up there
  • 00:07:29.070 --> 00:07:32.100
  • and he never smiles.
  • 00:07:32.110 --> 00:07:33.270
  • But, you know where joy came from?
  • 00:07:33.280 --> 00:07:35.230
  • God invented it.
  • 00:07:35.240 --> 00:07:36.240
  • He gave it to us.
  • 00:07:36.250 --> 00:07:37.290
  • We're created in his image and part of the image of God
  • 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:39.250
  • is that he's a God of joy.
  • 00:07:39.260 --> 00:07:41.220
  • So we have to kind of change our mind about that.
  • 00:07:41.230 --> 00:07:45.210
  • Sheila: Can you give us a few kind of ideas
  • 00:07:45.220 --> 00:07:48.040
  • of how you can actually cultivate an atmosphere of joy?
  • 00:07:48.050 --> 00:07:51.230
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Joy is a decision we make and
  • 00:07:51.240 --> 00:07:53.210
  • we can look out at our situation and we can decide
  • 00:07:53.220 --> 00:07:56.150
  • what we wanna do.
  • 00:07:56.160 --> 00:07:57.170
  • We can either look at it from God's perspective,
  • 00:07:57.180 --> 00:08:00.120
  • he's in control.
  • 00:08:00.130 --> 00:08:01.210
  • Nothing ever happens to me that isn't sifted through his hands.
  • 00:08:01.220 --> 00:08:05.170
  • Or we can sit there and have a little pity party for ourselves
  • 00:08:05.180 --> 00:08:08.020
  • and then despair and discouragement descends over us
  • 00:08:08.030 --> 00:08:11.210
  • so what I can say is this.
  • 00:08:11.220 --> 00:08:13.030
  • Sometimes we worry so much about what we've lost
  • 00:08:13.040 --> 00:08:15.120
  • and we forget about what we have left.
  • 00:08:15.130 --> 00:08:18.050
  • And that's where joy happens.
  • 00:08:18.060 --> 00:08:20.130
  • Sheila: Yeah.
  • 00:08:20.140 --> 00:08:21.190
  • The third decision, I can't think of anything more practical
  • 00:08:21.200 --> 00:08:23.270
  • for the days we're living in.
  • 00:08:23.280 --> 00:08:25.030
  • It's about "A Life of Peace."
  • 00:08:25.040 --> 00:08:26.230
  • Peace is a word that's bandied around a lot in our culture,
  • 00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:30.090
  • and it has so many different meanings.
  • 00:08:30.100 --> 00:08:32.010
  • What is the biblical definition of peace?
  • 00:08:32.020 --> 00:08:34.290
  • Dr. Jeremiah: I think peace is best defined by its Hebrew
  • 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:40.010
  • counterpart and that is shalom.
  • 00:08:40.020 --> 00:08:44.040
  • I love that word, "shalom."
  • 00:08:44.050 --> 00:08:45.150
  • It sounds peaceful, doesn't it?
  • 00:08:45.160 --> 00:08:47.200
  • And shalom is a very interesting word.
  • 00:08:47.210 --> 00:08:49.160
  • It's mentioned many, many times in the Old Testament.
  • 00:08:49.170 --> 00:08:52.030
  • It is the key word in the Old Testament.
  • 00:08:52.040 --> 00:08:55.010
  • And it's far more than just the absence of anxiety.
  • 00:08:55.020 --> 00:08:59.230
  • That's what some people think peace is.
  • 00:08:59.240 --> 00:09:01.120
  • It's not what you have.
  • 00:09:01.130 --> 00:09:02.130
  • It's what you don't have.
  • 00:09:02.140 --> 00:09:03.280
  • But shalom is much more than that.
  • 00:09:03.290 --> 00:09:06.050
  • Shalom is a peace that is a totality of peace.
  • 00:09:06.060 --> 00:09:10.050
  • It's a sense of wellbeing.
  • 00:09:10.060 --> 00:09:12.020
  • I read something when I was working on this project I'd
  • 00:09:12.030 --> 00:09:14.070
  • never read before or I've never even heard this associated
  • 00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:17.060
  • with peace.
  • 00:09:17.070 --> 00:09:18.070
  • The writer said, "It's a sense of good morale."
  • 00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:22.020
  • You have a sense of good morale in your heart.
  • 00:09:22.030 --> 00:09:24.020
  • You're at peace.
  • 00:09:24.030 --> 00:09:24.290
  • All is well in your heart.
  • 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:27.160
  • Do you know what?
  • 00:09:27.170 --> 00:09:28.210
  • It's so interesting to me that even when things aren't
  • 00:09:28.220 --> 00:09:30.140
  • all good on the outside, if you've cultivated relationship
  • 00:09:30.150 --> 00:09:34.200
  • with Jesus Christ you can have that peace in your heart.
  • 00:09:34.210 --> 00:09:37.180
  • Sheila: Beautiful.
  • 00:09:37.190 --> 00:09:38.200
  • Number four decision is "A Life of Endurance."
  • 00:09:38.210 --> 00:09:41.280
  • And you use a word.
  • 00:09:41.290 --> 00:09:42.290
  • I love this word.
  • 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:43.280
  • I haven't heard this in a long time.
  • 00:09:43.290 --> 00:09:45.180
  • You talk about the importance of grit.
  • 00:09:45.190 --> 00:09:48.180
  • I haven't heard that outside the context of John Wayne.
  • 00:09:48.190 --> 00:09:53.010
  • Dr. Jeremiah: I owe that to the book written
  • 00:09:53.020 --> 00:09:54.250
  • by Angela Duckworth.
  • 00:09:54.260 --> 00:09:55.280
  • She wrote a book called "Grit."
  • 00:09:55.290 --> 00:09:57.150
  • If y'all haven't read it, you should read it.
  • 00:09:57.160 --> 00:09:59.070
  • I should get something for this.
  • 00:09:59.080 --> 00:10:00.260
  • This is gonna be on television, advertising her book.
  • 00:10:00.270 --> 00:10:04.000
  • It is truly, truly one of the greatest books I read last year.
  • 00:10:04.010 --> 00:10:06.280
  • It was so much fun.
  • 00:10:06.290 --> 00:10:08.090
  • And the book is about how you decide what makes people work.
  • 00:10:08.100 --> 00:10:12.020
  • Is it their IQ and their giftedness, or is it their
  • 00:10:12.030 --> 00:10:15.240
  • passion and their commitment?
  • 00:10:15.250 --> 00:10:17.290
  • And, of course, it's not either/or, it's both/and.
  • 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:21.050
  • But the one that is often minimized is the idea of just
  • 00:10:21.060 --> 00:10:25.160
  • staying with it, being gritty, and the idea
  • 00:10:25.170 --> 00:10:29.070
  • of not ever giving up.
  • 00:10:29.080 --> 00:10:30.140
  • And the reason I love the book is there are so many stories in
  • 00:10:30.150 --> 00:10:33.040
  • there about people who endured against all kinds of odds.
  • 00:10:33.050 --> 00:10:37.110
  • In Hebrews it says we need endurance.
  • 00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:41.240
  • And I know that we do 'cause this thing we're doing, this
  • 00:10:41.250 --> 00:10:44.220
  • Christian thing we're doing, is not a 100-yard dash.
  • 00:10:44.230 --> 00:10:48.230
  • It's a marathon, isn't it?
  • 00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:50.020
  • Somebody once told me the problem with being
  • 00:10:50.030 --> 00:10:52.100
  • a Christian is so daily.
  • 00:10:52.110 --> 00:10:54.210
  • And, you know, isn't that true?
  • 00:10:54.220 --> 00:10:56.280
  • I mean, that really is true.
  • 00:10:56.290 --> 00:10:58.000
  • Every day you have to get up and be a Christian.
  • 00:10:58.010 --> 00:11:00.210
  • Sheila: Yep.
  • 00:11:00.220 --> 00:11:01.230
  • I think probably one of my favorite chapters in this
  • 00:11:01.240 --> 00:11:03.130
  • book is "A Life of Compassion."
  • 00:11:03.140 --> 00:11:06.150
  • And you retell the story of the good Samaritan and you talk
  • 00:11:06.160 --> 00:11:09.210
  • about the fact that Christ told stories a lot.
  • 00:11:09.220 --> 00:11:13.000
  • Why do you think he told so many stories?
  • 00:11:13.010 --> 00:11:14.280
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, he's the greatest story teller
  • 00:11:14.290 --> 00:11:16.290
  • in my estimation who ever lived.
  • 00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:18.100
  • He was a master, and he could do it like...
  • 00:11:18.110 --> 00:11:21.220
  • He comes across a fig tree and he tells a story
  • 00:11:21.230 --> 00:11:23.290
  • about a fig tree.
  • 00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:25.060
  • He doesn't need a script.
  • 00:11:25.070 --> 00:11:26.150
  • He just told stories.
  • 00:11:26.160 --> 00:11:27.200
  • And here's what I've learned about that, Sheila.
  • 00:11:27.210 --> 00:11:30.160
  • Why do we like stories?
  • 00:11:30.170 --> 00:11:32.120
  • I mean, it kills me when I preach a doctrinal sermon
  • 00:11:32.130 --> 00:11:34.190
  • that I think is really deep, and the only thing
  • 00:11:34.200 --> 00:11:36.140
  • you all remember is the joke or the story I told
  • 00:11:36.150 --> 00:11:38.070
  • in the sermon.
  • 00:11:38.080 --> 00:11:40.140
  • But why is that?
  • 00:11:40.150 --> 00:11:41.240
  • They bring the truth of God into the emotional part of our life.
  • 00:11:41.250 --> 00:11:46.020
  • I had a prof once who said, "Stories are the windows
  • 00:11:46.030 --> 00:11:49.260
  • into your soul."
  • 00:11:49.270 --> 00:11:51.230
  • And Jesus knew that, and when he was trying to teach
  • 00:11:51.240 --> 00:11:54.040
  • a deep and abiding truth, he would tell a story.
  • 00:11:54.050 --> 00:11:57.060
  • You might not remember what he said but you never forget
  • 00:11:57.070 --> 00:11:59.160
  • the story like the prodigal son, and all of those stories.
  • 00:11:59.170 --> 00:12:02.280
  • And they're riveted in our hearts.
  • 00:12:02.290 --> 00:12:05.020
  • One of the reasons I try to work so hard at stories
  • 00:12:05.030 --> 00:12:07.180
  • is because I believe that.
  • 00:12:07.190 --> 00:12:09.090
  • I believe that stories make truth come alive for people.
  • 00:12:09.100 --> 00:12:12.250
  • And Jesus was the master.
  • 00:12:12.260 --> 00:12:14.160
  • He was just the master.
  • 00:12:14.170 --> 00:12:16.030
  • Sheila: I've known the story of the good Samaritan since
  • 00:12:16.040 --> 00:12:18.040
  • I was a little girl in Sunday school
  • 00:12:18.050 --> 00:12:20.020
  • but you say something I've never thought of before.
  • 00:12:20.030 --> 00:12:22.000
  • You say that Jesus is our good Samaritan.
  • 00:12:22.010 --> 00:12:25.080
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Yes, he is.
  • 00:12:25.090 --> 00:12:26.140
  • And I believe that whole story is just a metaphor for the
  • 00:12:26.150 --> 00:12:30.130
  • Lord Jesus and his love for us.
  • 00:12:30.140 --> 00:12:31.280
  • He is the good Samaritan.
  • 00:12:31.290 --> 00:12:34.100
  • And there are no barriers for God's love.
  • 00:12:34.110 --> 00:12:37.000
  • He just--he goes past them and
  • 00:12:37.010 --> 00:12:39.000
  • no matter what you've done, no matter who you are or how far
  • 00:12:39.010 --> 00:12:42.020
  • you may think you have fallen from the grace of God, the hand
  • 00:12:42.030 --> 00:12:45.160
  • of God's grace is longer than anything you can ever do.
  • 00:12:45.170 --> 00:12:49.120
  • He will never give up on you and the prodigal son, the good
  • 00:12:49.130 --> 00:12:54.020
  • Samaritan, those are all stories to help us remember that.
  • 00:12:54.030 --> 00:12:58.230
  • Sheila: How do we guard ourselves against a life where
  • 00:12:58.240 --> 00:13:01.150
  • we know all the right answers but we don't necessarily know
  • 00:13:01.160 --> 00:13:04.240
  • how to love people?
  • 00:13:04.250 --> 00:13:05.190
  • Sometimes we want people to line up.
  • 00:13:05.200 --> 00:13:07.250
  • If you're gonna be a Christian, here's A, B, C, and D.
  • 00:13:07.260 --> 00:13:10.150
  • But really, it seems like the whole essence of Scripture
  • 00:13:10.160 --> 00:13:13.210
  • is not about that.
  • 00:13:13.220 --> 00:13:15.030
  • It's about a life of love and loving others.
  • 00:13:15.040 --> 00:13:17.180
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, one of the things that I think had
  • 00:13:17.190 --> 00:13:19.230
  • the greatest impact on me when I was studying love a couple
  • 00:13:19.240 --> 00:13:23.070
  • of years ago and we did a thing here called "God Loves You.
  • 00:13:23.080 --> 00:13:26.010
  • He Always Has and He Always Will."
  • 00:13:26.020 --> 00:13:27.230
  • I remember the whole thing in there about how you're supposed
  • 00:13:27.240 --> 00:13:29.270
  • to love your enemies and, you know, we all know that.
  • 00:13:29.280 --> 00:13:33.080
  • But have you ever thought about this?
  • 00:13:33.090 --> 00:13:36.130
  • The Bible says, "Love your enemies," and
  • 00:13:36.140 --> 00:13:38.140
  • then it tells you how to do it.
  • 00:13:38.150 --> 00:13:41.020
  • Do good to them, pray for them, and meet their needs.
  • 00:13:41.030 --> 00:13:45.090
  • So what is love?
  • 00:13:45.100 --> 00:13:47.030
  • Love isn't something you feel, it's something you do.
  • 00:13:47.040 --> 00:13:50.110
  • I think about that also, for instance, in the book
  • 00:13:50.120 --> 00:13:52.130
  • of Revelation when the letters are written to all the churches
  • 00:13:52.140 --> 00:13:54.260
  • there, and the church of Ephesus had lost its first love.
  • 00:13:54.270 --> 00:13:59.100
  • What were they instructed to do?
  • 00:13:59.110 --> 00:14:01.160
  • Go back and do the first works.
  • 00:14:01.170 --> 00:14:04.120
  • Love is not about a feeling.
  • 00:14:04.130 --> 00:14:06.190
  • Love is about what we do.
  • 00:14:06.200 --> 00:14:07.270
  • How do I love somebody who's unlovable?
  • 00:14:07.280 --> 00:14:09.270
  • I just do it.
  • 00:14:09.280 --> 00:14:11.130
  • I just do the things that I need to do.
  • 00:14:11.140 --> 00:14:14.060
  • Are they gonna respond?
  • 00:14:14.070 --> 00:14:15.130
  • That's not the issue because genuine love is love that does
  • 00:14:15.140 --> 00:14:18.040
  • not expect a response.
  • 00:14:18.050 --> 00:14:20.060
  • And so real love is not, "Well, I'll do this for you
  • 00:14:20.070 --> 00:14:24.000
  • and then you do this for me."
  • 00:14:24.010 --> 00:14:26.060
  • Real love is loving without regard to anything coming
  • 00:14:26.070 --> 00:14:29.100
  • back your way.
  • 00:14:29.110 --> 00:14:30.270
  • And when we do that, we enter into the love of God.
  • 00:14:30.280 --> 00:14:34.080
  • In your chapter on "A Life of Generosity,"
  • 00:14:34.090 --> 00:14:36.210
  • you write something that will be very good news
  • 00:14:36.220 --> 00:14:38.170
  • to many of us.
  • 00:14:38.180 --> 00:14:39.190
  • I quote, "Generosity is not what's--about what's
  • 00:14:39.200 --> 00:14:42.090
  • in your bank account but what's in your heart."
  • 00:14:42.100 --> 00:14:44.260
  • That's good news right there.
  • 00:14:44.270 --> 00:14:46.010
  • Dr. Jeremiah: It is, yeah, and that's really important
  • 00:14:46.020 --> 00:14:48.170
  • because otherwise it would only be for rich people.
  • 00:14:48.180 --> 00:14:51.050
  • In fact, the word "generosity" originally was a word that was
  • 00:14:51.060 --> 00:14:55.030
  • sort of reserved for the elite.
  • 00:14:55.040 --> 00:14:57.120
  • The word "generosity" comes ultimately from the word
  • 00:14:57.130 --> 00:14:59.240
  • "genesis" which means beginning.
  • 00:14:59.250 --> 00:15:02.010
  • So to be generous you had to have been born well.
  • 00:15:02.020 --> 00:15:06.070
  • But when Jesus came on the scene, he turned that upside
  • 00:15:06.080 --> 00:15:09.190
  • down and he honored a woman who was not only not born well, she
  • 00:15:09.200 --> 00:15:13.000
  • didn't have two nickels to rub together and she put her meager
  • 00:15:13.010 --> 00:15:16.060
  • offering in the temple receptacle one day and Jesus
  • 00:15:16.070 --> 00:15:20.080
  • made her so famous we still talk about her almost every Sunday
  • 00:15:20.090 --> 00:15:24.240
  • somewhere in the world 'cause she was this amazing
  • 00:15:24.250 --> 00:15:26.260
  • generous woman.
  • 00:15:26.270 --> 00:15:29.030
  • And there's such a joy in generosity
  • 00:15:29.040 --> 00:15:32.150
  • And there's so much fun you can have with it too.
  • 00:15:32.160 --> 00:15:34.250
  • And I wanna be a generous person.
  • 00:15:34.260 --> 00:15:38.010
  • I want our church to be a generous church.
  • 00:15:38.020 --> 00:15:40.050
  • I believe it is.
  • 00:15:40.060 --> 00:15:41.220
  • It's so interesting that the story in the New Testament about
  • 00:15:41.230 --> 00:15:44.210
  • generosity is told against the backdrop of elitism.
  • 00:15:44.220 --> 00:15:50.280
  • This woman wasn't elite but she was generous and that's
  • 00:15:50.290 --> 00:15:53.180
  • why we can say it's not about how much money you have.
  • 00:15:53.190 --> 00:15:56.070
  • It's about what's in your heart.
  • 00:15:56.080 --> 00:15:57.250
  • Sheila: So you talk about your background and I think many
  • 00:15:57.260 --> 00:15:59.230
  • of us can identify with that.
  • 00:15:59.240 --> 00:16:01.000
  • So has this understanding of generosity, has this been
  • 00:16:01.010 --> 00:16:03.260
  • a journey for you?
  • 00:16:03.270 --> 00:16:05.030
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Yes, it has.
  • 00:16:05.040 --> 00:16:06.060
  • It really has.
  • 00:16:06.070 --> 00:16:07.270
  • And I hope it never stops.
  • 00:16:07.280 --> 00:16:11.090
  • Sheila: You talk about "A Life of Integrity."
  • 00:16:11.100 --> 00:16:14.030
  • And, boy, in our culture I can't think of something
  • 00:16:14.040 --> 00:16:16.220
  • that would be more important.
  • 00:16:16.230 --> 00:16:18.220
  • How do you define integrity and in what ways is God
  • 00:16:18.230 --> 00:16:22.200
  • the God of integrity?
  • 00:16:22.210 --> 00:16:24.100
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, I remember reading a book by a guy
  • 00:16:24.110 --> 00:16:27.190
  • named Stockdale who was a prisoner during the Vietnam war.
  • 00:16:27.200 --> 00:16:32.010
  • He had a definition of integrity that I wrote down
  • 00:16:32.020 --> 00:16:35.150
  • but I wrote it in my heart so I would never forget it.
  • 00:16:35.160 --> 00:16:37.280
  • Here's what he said.
  • 00:16:37.290 --> 00:16:39.020
  • He said, "Integrity is keeping a commitment after the
  • 00:16:39.030 --> 00:16:42.170
  • circumstances under which the commitment
  • 00:16:42.180 --> 00:16:45.110
  • was made have changed."
  • 00:16:45.120 --> 00:16:48.180
  • That is a profound thought.
  • 00:16:48.190 --> 00:16:50.250
  • Integrity is keeping a commitment after the
  • 00:16:50.260 --> 00:16:55.030
  • circumstances under which the commitment
  • 00:16:55.040 --> 00:16:57.210
  • was made have changed.
  • 00:16:57.220 --> 00:16:58.170
  • "Well, I can't stay married to you.
  • 00:16:58.180 --> 00:17:00.260
  • I didn't know this."
  • 00:17:00.270 --> 00:17:02.010
  • No, no, when you make a decision and you make a commitment,
  • 00:17:02.020 --> 00:17:04.210
  • that commitment is not gonna be changed by the circumstances
  • 00:17:04.220 --> 00:17:08.170
  • that change.
  • 00:17:08.180 --> 00:17:09.280
  • That's what integrity is.
  • 00:17:09.290 --> 00:17:11.210
  • Sheila: I love that.
  • 00:17:11.220 --> 00:17:12.270
  • That is a profound definition.
  • 00:17:12.280 --> 00:17:14.070
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And isn't God like that?
  • 00:17:14.080 --> 00:17:16.260
  • Aren't you glad the Bible says: "Even when we're faithless,
  • 00:17:16.270 --> 00:17:19.090
  • he remains faithful"?
  • 00:17:19.100 --> 00:17:21.270
  • God doesn't say, "I'm gonna take care of you until you mess up.
  • 00:17:21.280 --> 00:17:25.140
  • And when you mess up one time, it's over."
  • 00:17:25.150 --> 00:17:27.230
  • No, God says, "I love you.
  • 00:17:27.240 --> 00:17:29.150
  • I'm gonna be with you.
  • 00:17:29.160 --> 00:17:30.230
  • I will never leave you," and no matter what we do, he just keeps
  • 00:17:30.240 --> 00:17:33.130
  • right on loving us because he's a God of integrity.
  • 00:17:33.140 --> 00:17:37.080
  • Sheila: I love that.
  • 00:17:37.090 --> 00:17:38.160
  • Do you see some things that are common obstacles
  • 00:17:38.170 --> 00:17:42.160
  • to living a life of integrity?
  • 00:17:42.170 --> 00:17:44.170
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know, one of the reasons it's hard
  • 00:17:44.180 --> 00:17:46.220
  • to live a life of integrity is there's no--
  • 00:17:46.230 --> 00:17:48.270
  • there's no integrity.
  • 00:17:48.280 --> 00:17:50.050
  • Have you all been listening to the news this week?
  • 00:17:50.060 --> 00:17:51.290
  • I mean, every day you turn on the news,
  • 00:17:52.000 --> 00:17:54.150
  • you look at what's going on.
  • 00:17:54.160 --> 00:17:55.150
  • There is no integrity.
  • 00:17:55.160 --> 00:17:56.270
  • You don't know if anybody's ever telling the truth
  • 00:17:56.280 --> 00:17:58.190
  • and they probably aren't.
  • 00:17:58.200 --> 00:18:00.250
  • And so we have to be who we are in the midst of that
  • 00:18:00.260 --> 00:18:04.130
  • and we're swimming upstream.
  • 00:18:04.140 --> 00:18:06.180
  • Can I get a witness?
  • 00:18:06.190 --> 00:18:07.280
  • I mean, that's really--we're trying to do what's right, and
  • 00:18:07.290 --> 00:18:10.120
  • sometimes you look around and you say, "Well, you know, maybe
  • 00:18:10.130 --> 00:18:13.020
  • it's not worth it," you know?
  • 00:18:13.030 --> 00:18:15.130
  • I just think integrity is a very important word.
  • 00:18:15.140 --> 00:18:18.280
  • It can also be called faithfulness, being faithful
  • 00:18:18.290 --> 00:18:21.280
  • to what we say and always making sure that our word is our bond.
  • 00:18:21.290 --> 00:18:27.260
  • Sheila: So, seems a natural thing to flow into humility.
  • 00:18:27.270 --> 00:18:31.010
  • Humility isn't always seen as a popular word in our culture.
  • 00:18:31.020 --> 00:18:34.090
  • It's seen as being weak,
  • 00:18:34.100 --> 00:18:36.110
  • but that's not how Scripture defines humility.
  • 00:18:36.120 --> 00:18:38.150
  • Dr. Jeremiah: No, humility is not weakness.
  • 00:18:38.160 --> 00:18:41.290
  • Meekness is not weakness.
  • 00:18:42.000 --> 00:18:44.110
  • Humility is just being other-centered in the way you
  • 00:18:44.120 --> 00:18:47.270
  • think, not thinking about yourself all the time.
  • 00:18:47.280 --> 00:18:51.100
  • It's a really hard thing to talk about because if you talk about
  • 00:18:51.110 --> 00:18:54.010
  • it, maybe some people think you've mastered it and, once
  • 00:18:54.020 --> 00:18:56.120
  • you do that, you're not humble anymore, right?
  • 00:18:56.130 --> 00:18:58.220
  • But that's true.
  • 00:18:58.230 --> 00:19:00.260
  • There's a little joke about this guy who wrote a book called
  • 00:19:00.270 --> 00:19:03.150
  • "The Ten Most Humble People in the World
  • 00:19:03.160 --> 00:19:05.280
  • and How I Chose the Other Nine."
  • 00:19:05.290 --> 00:19:08.120
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:19:08.130 --> 00:19:12.040
  • And so this whole thing about humility is when you're
  • 00:19:12.050 --> 00:19:15.080
  • with somebody who is humble you know it.
  • 00:19:15.090 --> 00:19:18.140
  • And you also know it when you're with somebody who's not.
  • 00:19:18.150 --> 00:19:20.210
  • We were talking earlier about having a conversation with
  • 00:19:20.220 --> 00:19:24.030
  • people that isn't a conversation but it's a listening experience
  • 00:19:24.040 --> 00:19:27.020
  • 'cause they do all the talking.
  • 00:19:27.030 --> 00:19:29.010
  • Humility is actually genuinely caring about other people and
  • 00:19:29.020 --> 00:19:33.110
  • entering into who they are, and humility is power under control.
  • 00:19:33.120 --> 00:19:40.250
  • It is knowing you know what you know but not having to tell
  • 00:19:40.260 --> 00:19:43.150
  • people about it all the time.
  • 00:19:43.160 --> 00:19:45.210
  • The Lord Jesus was humble, and the Bible says he could have
  • 00:19:45.220 --> 00:19:48.100
  • called 10.000 angels but he didn't.
  • 00:19:48.110 --> 00:19:53.020
  • So, you know, I think that's a lifelong learning process,
  • 00:19:53.030 --> 00:19:57.130
  • what it means to be humble.
  • 00:19:57.140 --> 00:19:59.070
  • And I can just say it again.
  • 00:19:59.080 --> 00:20:00.030
  • When you see it, you know it.
  • 00:20:00.040 --> 00:20:03.140
  • Sheila: You finish the nine decisions
  • 00:20:03.150 --> 00:20:05.150
  • with one on living "A Life of Self-Discipline."
  • 00:20:05.160 --> 00:20:09.110
  • Why did you tag that one on at the very end?
  • 00:20:09.120 --> 00:20:11.280
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, because it's the last one in the list.
  • 00:20:11.290 --> 00:20:15.270
  • Sheila: Ask a silly question.
  • 00:20:15.280 --> 00:20:18.180
  • Dr. Jeremiah: No, I'm just teasing.
  • 00:20:18.190 --> 00:20:22.100
  • But what--the reason I did that is because I think
  • 00:20:22.110 --> 00:20:26.120
  • it's at the end on purpose.
  • 00:20:26.130 --> 00:20:28.160
  • It's kind of like the glue that holds all the rest
  • 00:20:28.170 --> 00:20:31.050
  • of them together.
  • 00:20:31.060 --> 00:20:32.270
  • And, you know, it's possible to learn about all of these
  • 00:20:32.280 --> 00:20:35.180
  • wonderful characteristics that God wants us to emulate but if
  • 00:20:35.190 --> 00:20:40.090
  • we never do anything about it, we're just gonna be smarter
  • 00:20:40.100 --> 00:20:42.190
  • but not better.
  • 00:20:42.200 --> 00:20:44.190
  • And so self-discipline means you take seriously the importance
  • 00:20:44.200 --> 00:20:49.200
  • of doing the things you know are gonna make things better
  • 00:20:49.210 --> 00:20:54.050
  • in these areas of life.
  • 00:20:54.060 --> 00:20:56.230
  • Sheila: Because we do live in a culture of very quick fixes
  • 00:20:56.240 --> 00:20:59.020
  • where everything's becoming immediate.
  • 00:20:59.030 --> 00:21:01.020
  • We want to download everything immediately.
  • 00:21:01.030 --> 00:21:02.290
  • Why is self-discipline so hard to master?
  • 00:21:03.000 --> 00:21:06.200
  • Dr. Jeremiah: First of all, the word "self,"
  • 00:21:06.210 --> 00:21:08.110
  • that's part of it.
  • 00:21:08.120 --> 00:21:11.110
  • But we are creatures that wanna do what we wanna do
  • 00:21:11.120 --> 00:21:13.210
  • when we wanna do it.
  • 00:21:13.220 --> 00:21:15.050
  • Sheila: Yeah, we know that when
  • 00:21:15.060 --> 00:21:16.250
  • there is no self-discipline, life becomes chaotic.
  • 00:21:16.260 --> 00:21:18.270
  • And some people think, "Well, it's--sounds
  • 00:21:18.280 --> 00:21:20.270
  • like a lot of hard work."
  • 00:21:20.280 --> 00:21:22.030
  • But you outline some very practical benefits of learning
  • 00:21:22.040 --> 00:21:25.260
  • to live a self-disciplined life.
  • 00:21:25.270 --> 00:21:28.020
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Most of those, I think, Sheila,
  • 00:21:28.030 --> 00:21:29.200
  • are from the Proverbs.
  • 00:21:29.210 --> 00:21:31.030
  • And they, you know, when we're self-disciplined, we get control
  • 00:21:31.040 --> 00:21:34.090
  • of our language, our tongue, we get control
  • 00:21:34.100 --> 00:21:37.180
  • of so many things in our lives.
  • 00:21:37.190 --> 00:21:39.120
  • And when we don't do that, we're undisciplined.
  • 00:21:39.130 --> 00:21:42.220
  • As you said, it's very chaotic.
  • 00:21:42.230 --> 00:21:45.150
  • There are some things we just have to do,
  • 00:21:45.160 --> 00:21:47.180
  • and we have to do them.
  • 00:21:47.190 --> 00:21:48.250
  • One of the things I've been very worried about in writing this
  • 00:21:48.260 --> 00:21:51.060
  • book is that people would think that we can do all of these
  • 00:21:51.070 --> 00:21:57.060
  • things and develop all of these qualities in our own strength.
  • 00:21:57.070 --> 00:22:01.140
  • The Bible says that the fruit of the Spirit
  • 00:22:01.150 --> 00:22:03.270
  • are these nine things.
  • 00:22:03.280 --> 00:22:05.090
  • God gives us love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness,
  • 00:22:05.100 --> 00:22:08.100
  • goodness, meekness.
  • 00:22:08.110 --> 00:22:09.080
  • All of those things are gifts from God.
  • 00:22:09.090 --> 00:22:12.070
  • But they're gifts that have to be unwrapped.
  • 00:22:12.080 --> 00:22:14.230
  • They're gifts that have to be cultivated.
  • 00:22:14.240 --> 00:22:16.290
  • And so often Christians have just said, "Well, you know,
  • 00:22:17.000 --> 00:22:20.110
  • if I just wait around, Jesus will make me better and the
  • 00:22:20.120 --> 00:22:22.270
  • Holy Spirit will make me holy."
  • 00:22:22.280 --> 00:22:24.190
  • Well, that's not how it works.
  • 00:22:24.200 --> 00:22:26.210
  • The Holy Spirit has given us all of these wonderful
  • 00:22:26.220 --> 00:22:29.080
  • characteristics but there is some effort that is necessary
  • 00:22:29.090 --> 00:22:33.130
  • on the part of each of us who are believers.
  • 00:22:33.140 --> 00:22:36.130
  • This book is not saying if you just work really hard
  • 00:22:36.140 --> 00:22:38.270
  • you can be loving, joyful.
  • 00:22:38.280 --> 00:22:40.100
  • No, you have to have the gifts the Holy Spirit gives you,
  • 00:22:40.110 --> 00:22:44.090
  • and allow his power to enable you to do
  • 00:22:44.100 --> 00:22:47.190
  • these things that we talk about in the earlier chapters.
  • 00:22:47.200 --> 00:22:51.060
  • Sheila: As a pastor and someone who has studied the Word
  • 00:22:51.070 --> 00:22:53.020
  • of God for so many years, what's your best advice for somebody
  • 00:22:53.030 --> 00:22:56.200
  • who recognizes they're struggling in these nine areas?
  • 00:22:56.210 --> 00:23:01.030
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you start again.
  • 00:23:01.040 --> 00:23:02.250
  • You know, you have to start with the end in mind.
  • 00:23:02.260 --> 00:23:05.010
  • The end is that this is God's promise to you, that when you
  • 00:23:05.020 --> 00:23:08.230
  • become a Christian he fills you, he indwells you,
  • 00:23:08.240 --> 00:23:11.210
  • with his Spirit.
  • 00:23:11.220 --> 00:23:12.280
  • A lot of Christians I know who have been in the faith for a
  • 00:23:12.290 --> 00:23:15.000
  • long time don't believe that or don't know it or maybe don't
  • 00:23:15.010 --> 00:23:17.090
  • accept it, that there is no such thing as a Christian who
  • 00:23:17.100 --> 00:23:20.190
  • doesn't have the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:23:20.200 --> 00:23:22.090
  • Every Christian has the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:23:22.100 --> 00:23:24.280
  • It's one of your birth gifts.
  • 00:23:24.290 --> 00:23:26.070
  • As soon as you are born into the family of God, the Holy Spirit
  • 00:23:26.080 --> 00:23:28.220
  • comes to dwell in you.
  • 00:23:28.230 --> 00:23:30.170
  • He doesn't necessarily have total control.
  • 00:23:30.180 --> 00:23:33.060
  • He's the resident and he wants to be the president.
  • 00:23:33.070 --> 00:23:37.200
  • But the best thing you can do is to realize you have--the Bible
  • 00:23:37.210 --> 00:23:41.290
  • says we have everything we need for life in godliness.
  • 00:23:42.000 --> 00:23:45.290
  • And then it talks about the precious promises
  • 00:23:46.000 --> 00:23:47.240
  • of the Word of God.
  • 00:23:47.250 --> 00:23:49.080
  • As long as you have a desire in your heart to wanna know God
  • 00:23:49.090 --> 00:23:51.210
  • better and to love him more, you're on the right path.
  • 00:23:51.220 --> 00:23:56.140
  • You climb up on your dissatisfactions and find
  • 00:23:56.150 --> 00:23:59.190
  • your place in God's love.
  • 00:23:59.200 --> 00:24:02.010
  • Sheila: That's beautiful.
  • 00:24:02.020 --> 00:24:03.090
  • Well, Dr. Jeremiah, I just want to on behalf of our brothers and
  • 00:24:03.100 --> 00:24:06.170
  • sisters here and those watching, just thank you for the way that

  • you constantly point us back to Jesus Christ and,
  • 00:24:14.070 --> 00:24:17.070
  • for that, I thank you.
  • 00:24:17.080 --> 00:24:18.290
  • Would you help me thank Dr. David Jeremiah?
  • 00:24:19.000 --> 00:24:21.180
