  • male announcer: We often look back
  • 00:00:08.150 --> 00:00:09.240
  • at Christmases of the past with a special fondness.
  • 00:00:09.250 --> 00:00:13.040
  • Memories of giving and receiving cherished gifts,
  • 00:00:13.050 --> 00:00:16.150
  • meaningful time spent with those we love,
  • 00:00:16.160 --> 00:00:19.210
  • moments savoring a meal to mark the occasion,

  • minutes where all is right
  • 00:00:23.110 --> 00:00:24.230

  • While time moves on,
  • 00:00:28.040 --> 00:00:29.130
  • the world around us shifts and we change,
  • 00:00:29.140 --> 00:00:32.230
  • Christmas doesn't have to.
  • 00:00:32.240 --> 00:00:35.260
  • Your best Christmas ever is ready for you to make.
  • 00:00:35.270 --> 00:00:39.250
  • Family, friends, and festivities can be a part
  • 00:00:39.260 --> 00:00:42.280
  • of that which makes the holiday special,
  • 00:00:42.290 --> 00:00:45.200
  • but the best Christmas ever
  • 00:00:45.210 --> 00:00:47.090
  • is the one where Christ is in its center.
  • 00:00:47.100 --> 00:00:50.030
  • The greatest Christmas plan was God's on the very first
  • 00:00:50.040 --> 00:00:53.200
  • when God sent his Son to earth,
  • 00:00:53.210 --> 00:00:56.090
  • the ultimate present to his children.
  • 00:00:56.100 --> 00:00:58.210
  • Dr. David Jeremiah: I'm David Jeremiah,
  • 00:01:01.170 --> 00:01:03.030
  • thanking you for joining me during December
  • 00:01:03.040 --> 00:01:06.010
  • for our series of Christmas messages.
  • 00:01:06.020 --> 00:01:09.040
  • And I hope you tuned in last week
  • 00:01:09.050 --> 00:01:11.120
  • for our Christmas special from New York City:
  • 00:01:11.130 --> 00:01:14.020
  • "Make the Season Bright."
  • 00:01:14.030 --> 00:01:17.100
  • Christmas is wonderful wherever we are,
  • 00:01:17.110 --> 00:01:20.290
  • but the Christmas season in New York is hard to beat.
  • 00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:24.110
  • But now we've arrived at a challenging time,
  • 00:01:24.120 --> 00:01:26.190
  • that week between Christmas and the New Year.
  • 00:01:26.200 --> 00:01:30.250
  • It's time to pack away the Christmas decorations
  • 00:01:30.260 --> 00:01:33.100
  • and all of our merry memories.
  • 00:01:33.110 --> 00:01:36.070
  • In the back of our mind,
  • 00:01:36.080 --> 00:01:37.170
  • we've already begun to think about what's coming:
  • 00:01:37.180 --> 00:01:40.100
  • a new year and what it will bring.
  • 00:01:40.110 --> 00:01:43.120
  • That's the theme of today's message:
  • 00:01:43.130 --> 00:01:45.070
  • "A Psalm for the New Year."
  • 00:01:45.080 --> 00:01:47.190
  • It will remind us of the central role
  • 00:01:47.200 --> 00:01:49.250
  • the Bible should have in our lives
  • 00:01:49.260 --> 00:01:52.000
  • and I hope you will stay tuned and explore God's Word with me
  • 00:01:52.010 --> 00:01:55.170
  • on today's special New Year's edition of "Turning Point."
  • 00:01:55.180 --> 00:01:59.170
  • female announcer: Imagine if you could have walked with Christ
  • 00:02:01.140 --> 00:02:04.140
  • when he was here on earth.
  • 00:02:04.150 --> 00:02:06.210
  • What would you have learned, being close to him?
  • 00:02:06.220 --> 00:02:10.010
  • How would you have felt?
  • 00:02:10.020 --> 00:02:12.010
  • You can have the same relationship with him today.
  • 00:02:12.020 --> 00:02:15.070
  • How?
  • 00:02:15.080 --> 00:02:16.170
  • By seeking him out and learning from his Word.
  • 00:02:16.180 --> 00:02:20.010
  • Let David Jeremiah help you develop a closer walk with God

  • 00:03:04.280 --> 00:03:06.270
  • 00:03:08.100 --> 00:03:13.100
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Psalm 1 is a great doorway
  • 00:03:14.050 --> 00:03:16.170
  • to the New Year.
  • 00:03:16.180 --> 00:03:18.130
  • If we follow it carefully,
  • 00:03:18.140 --> 00:03:20.040
  • it can replace all of the frustrations
  • 00:03:20.050 --> 00:03:23.080
  • that we experience with our New Year's resolutions.
  • 00:03:23.090 --> 00:03:27.260
  • According to Psalm 1, we can chart our lives
  • 00:03:27.270 --> 00:03:31.000
  • in a much more powerful and lasting way.
  • 00:03:31.010 --> 00:03:34.270
  • We can choose a course that leads
  • 00:03:34.280 --> 00:03:36.290
  • to success and prosperity, and stay on that course
  • 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:40.230
  • all the way through this year and all the way through life
  • 00:03:40.240 --> 00:03:43.240
  • to a destiny of happiness and reward.
  • 00:03:43.250 --> 00:03:47.270
  • Psalm 1 teaches us
  • 00:03:47.280 --> 00:03:49.210
  • that there are really only two ways to do life.
  • 00:03:49.220 --> 00:03:53.130
  • This is the Psalm
  • 00:03:53.140 --> 00:03:54.230
  • of the two ways, the two destinies.
  • 00:03:54.240 --> 00:03:58.220
  • Psalm 1 sets forth the way of the righteous
  • 00:03:58.230 --> 00:04:01.230
  • and the way of the ungodly.
  • 00:04:01.240 --> 00:04:04.010
  • Verses 1 through 3 tell us about the way of the righteous
  • 00:04:04.020 --> 00:04:07.240
  • and verses 4 through 6 detail the way of the ungodly.
  • 00:04:07.250 --> 00:04:13.110
  • In these two pathways,
  • 00:04:13.120 --> 00:04:16.180
  • the Psalmist sounds a note that is found
  • 00:04:16.190 --> 00:04:18.270
  • in many other places in the Bible.
  • 00:04:18.280 --> 00:04:21.290
  • There are not many ways of life as some teach.
  • 00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:26.010
  • There are only two.
  • 00:04:26.020 --> 00:04:28.250
  • Daniel says it this way:
  • 00:04:28.260 --> 00:04:30.130
  • "Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth
  • 00:04:30.140 --> 00:04:32.260
  • shall awake, some to everlasting life,
  • 00:04:32.270 --> 00:04:35.290
  • and some to shame and everlasting contempt."
  • 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:41.050
  • Malachi puts it this way: "Then ye shall again discern
  • 00:04:41.060 --> 00:04:43.290
  • between the righteous and the wicked,
  • 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:47.040
  • between one who serves God and one who does not serve him."
  • 00:04:47.050 --> 00:04:50.270
  • In Matthew we read these words: "Enter by the narrow gate,
  • 00:04:50.280 --> 00:04:55.140
  • for wide is the gate and broad is the way
  • 00:04:55.150 --> 00:04:57.240
  • that leads to destruction,
  • 00:04:57.250 --> 00:04:59.070
  • and there are many who go in by it.
  • 00:04:59.080 --> 00:05:02.140
  • Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way
  • 00:05:02.150 --> 00:05:07.030
  • which leads to life, and there are few who find it."
  • 00:05:07.040 --> 00:05:10.000
  • Just two ways.
  • 00:05:10.010 --> 00:05:11.240
  • Most of us spend a lot of time
  • 00:05:11.250 --> 00:05:14.000
  • trying to find happiness.
  • 00:05:14.010 --> 00:05:16.080
  • We're all involved in the pursuit of happiness.
  • 00:05:16.090 --> 00:05:18.270
  • Hardly anybody ever thinks
  • 00:05:18.280 --> 00:05:20.140
  • that that journey could end in God,
  • 00:05:20.150 --> 00:05:23.090
  • and yet the Bible is very clear to tell us
  • 00:05:23.100 --> 00:05:26.220
  • we should not take God out of the picture
  • 00:05:26.230 --> 00:05:29.150
  • or we will not have joy.
  • 00:05:29.160 --> 00:05:32.040
  • Psalm 16:11 says: "God, you'll show me the path of life;
  • 00:05:32.050 --> 00:05:37.050
  • and in your presence is fullness of joy;
  • 00:05:37.060 --> 00:05:40.010
  • at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."
  • 00:05:40.020 --> 00:05:44.140
  • Psalm 34:8 says: "Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;
  • 00:05:44.150 --> 00:05:50.140
  • blessed," happy, "is the man who trusts in him!"
  • 00:05:50.150 --> 00:05:54.210
  • So Psalm 1 offers us true, lasting happiness
  • 00:05:54.220 --> 00:05:59.170
  • by showing us the difference
  • 00:05:59.180 --> 00:06:01.110
  • between the righteous and the wicked.
  • 00:06:01.120 --> 00:06:04.160
  • So let's take this little journey
  • 00:06:04.170 --> 00:06:06.010
  • through these six verses.
  • 00:06:06.020 --> 00:06:07.180
  • This is a very special psalm.
  • 00:06:07.190 --> 00:06:10.190
  • It begins in verses 1 through 3.
  • 00:06:10.200 --> 00:06:12.260
  • In describing the way of the righteous,
  • 00:06:12.270 --> 00:06:15.100
  • the Psalmist tells us
  • 00:06:15.110 --> 00:06:17.020
  • two general things about these people.
  • 00:06:17.030 --> 00:06:20.080
  • First he tells us
  • 00:06:20.090 --> 00:06:21.270
  • that people who live on the way of the righteous
  • 00:06:21.280 --> 00:06:25.120
  • avoid the downward pull of the ungodly.
  • 00:06:25.130 --> 00:06:30.270
  • "Blessed is the man who walks not
  • 00:06:30.280 --> 00:06:33.260
  • in the counsel of the ungodly."
  • 00:06:33.270 --> 00:06:36.040
  • Don't get yourself involved in relationships
  • 00:06:36.050 --> 00:06:39.210
  • and in situations where the influence in your life
  • 00:06:39.220 --> 00:06:45.110
  • is dragging you into a wrong position.
  • 00:06:45.120 --> 00:06:50.130
  • Then there's another thing
  • 00:06:50.140 --> 00:06:51.260
  • that we learn about the righteous:
  • 00:06:51.270 --> 00:06:54.130
  • They accept the decisive place of the Scripture.
  • 00:06:54.140 --> 00:06:58.080
  • But this godly man's, "Delight is in the law of the Lord,
  • 00:06:58.090 --> 00:07:04.060
  • and in his law he meditates day and night.
  • 00:07:04.070 --> 00:07:08.170
  • He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water,
  • 00:07:08.180 --> 00:07:12.000
  • that brings forth its fruit in its season,
  • 00:07:12.010 --> 00:07:15.240
  • whose leaf also shall not wither;
  • 00:07:15.250 --> 00:07:18.070
  • and whatever he does will prosper."
  • 00:07:18.080 --> 00:07:21.200
  • Let's unpack that.
  • 00:07:21.210 --> 00:07:23.170
  • Notice, first of all, "Their hearts delight
  • 00:07:23.180 --> 00:07:26.030
  • in the Word of God,
  • 00:07:26.040 --> 00:07:27.290
  • but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
  • 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:30.020
  • and in his law he meditates day and night."
  • 00:07:30.030 --> 00:07:33.010
  • This person who delights in the Word of God
  • 00:07:33.020 --> 00:07:35.130
  • finds his greatest joy in doing those things
  • 00:07:35.140 --> 00:07:38.140
  • which he knows will please the Lord.
  • 00:07:38.150 --> 00:07:41.100
  • He studies the Word of God,
  • 00:07:41.110 --> 00:07:42.230
  • and when he finds a passage that applies to him,
  • 00:07:42.240 --> 00:07:45.200
  • he determines to carry it out in his life.
  • 00:07:45.210 --> 00:07:48.210
  • He delights to match up his life
  • 00:07:48.220 --> 00:07:50.220
  • with the principles he discovers in the Word of God.
  • 00:07:50.230 --> 00:07:53.290
  • He meditates in that Word day and night.
  • 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:56.200
  • He chews over God's Word
  • 00:07:56.210 --> 00:07:58.160
  • throughout the day and into the night.
  • 00:07:58.170 --> 00:08:01.020
  • Let me tell you how that can work.
  • 00:08:01.030 --> 00:08:03.190
  • Over this last year,
  • 00:08:03.200 --> 00:08:05.000
  • I've been working on memorizing a large portion of Scripture.
  • 00:08:05.010 --> 00:08:09.080
  • I am not going to tell you which portion it is
  • 00:08:09.090 --> 00:08:11.180
  • or how I'm doing with the process
  • 00:08:11.190 --> 00:08:14.040
  • 'cause I don't want you to come up and check me out
  • 00:08:14.050 --> 00:08:16.060
  • and then I'll mess up and you'll all be discouraged.
  • 00:08:16.070 --> 00:08:20.080
  • But let me tell you what I have learned
  • 00:08:20.090 --> 00:08:21.190
  • in memorizing large sections of Scripture.
  • 00:08:21.200 --> 00:08:25.030
  • When you go to bed at night, and maybe you've had
  • 00:08:25.040 --> 00:08:27.290
  • a day full of anxiety things and troubles and problems,
  • 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:33.010
  • and maybe you've read that you should count sheep,
  • 00:08:33.020 --> 00:08:35.150
  • I have a suggestion for you.
  • 00:08:35.160 --> 00:08:37.190
  • If you have any Word of God in your spirit, meditate on it.
  • 00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:42.120
  • I practice my memorization
  • 00:08:42.130 --> 00:08:44.220
  • at night sometimes before I go to sleep.
  • 00:08:44.230 --> 00:08:47.080
  • I've discovered something
  • 00:08:47.090 --> 00:08:48.180
  • that I don't know how to explain,
  • 00:08:48.190 --> 00:08:50.060
  • but your mind is more fertile in remembering
  • 00:08:50.070 --> 00:08:52.290
  • just before you go to sleep
  • 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:54.090
  • than maybe any other time in the day.
  • 00:08:54.100 --> 00:08:56.060
  • Now, you wouldn't know that
  • 00:08:56.070 --> 00:08:57.160
  • by looking at people who fall asleep in church,
  • 00:08:57.170 --> 00:08:59.190
  • but that's true.
  • 00:08:59.200 --> 00:09:05.050
  • So when I'm laying on my bed at night
  • 00:09:05.060 --> 00:09:06.280
  • and my head's on my pillow and everything is quiet,
  • 00:09:06.290 --> 00:09:10.270
  • I think through the passage I'm memorizing.
  • 00:09:10.280 --> 00:09:14.280
  • The Bible isn't something
  • 00:09:14.290 --> 00:09:16.080
  • you just carry to church with you on Sunday and throw
  • 00:09:16.090 --> 00:09:18.220
  • it into the back window shelf in your car
  • 00:09:18.230 --> 00:09:20.260
  • till seven days go by.
  • 00:09:20.270 --> 00:09:23.240
  • The Bible should be the source of your strength.
  • 00:09:23.250 --> 00:09:27.080
  • The Bible says, "Their heart delights in the Word of God."
  • 00:09:27.090 --> 00:09:29.280
  • Now notice, not only does their heart delight in it,
  • 00:09:29.290 --> 00:09:32.280
  • but their habits are dictated by it.
  • 00:09:32.290 --> 00:09:35.070
  • Their strength comes from the Word of God.
  • 00:09:35.080 --> 00:09:37.280
  • The Psalmist says, "He shall be like a tree."
  • 00:09:37.290 --> 00:09:41.270
  • A tree is a picture of a man in this Psalm.
  • 00:09:41.280 --> 00:09:47.030
  • Just as a tree is nourished by constant supplies of water,
  • 00:09:47.040 --> 00:09:51.050
  • without which it would die in the blistering sun,
  • 00:09:51.060 --> 00:09:54.290
  • so the strength of a godly man
  • 00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:57.190
  • is maintained by the supplies of grace
  • 00:09:57.200 --> 00:10:01.030
  • that are drawn from the Word of God.
  • 00:10:01.040 --> 00:10:04.060
  • How do you stay strong in your life?
  • 00:10:04.070 --> 00:10:07.230
  • Don't try to do it on your own.
  • 00:10:07.240 --> 00:10:09.090
  • Get strength from the Word of God.
  • 00:10:09.100 --> 00:10:11.220
  • Number two, their strength comes from the Word of God
  • 00:10:11.230 --> 00:10:14.250
  • and their stability comes from the Word of God.
  • 00:10:14.260 --> 00:10:17.190
  • Notice the text says: "Planted by the rivers of water."
  • 00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:22.110
  • A fruit tree that is planted by the banks of the river
  • 00:10:22.120 --> 00:10:25.150
  • suggests stability.
  • 00:10:25.160 --> 00:10:28.110
  • The tree is firmly rooted in the soil.
  • 00:10:28.120 --> 00:10:31.090
  • The Bible says when we become aware
  • 00:10:31.100 --> 00:10:34.120
  • of the importance of sinking our roots
  • 00:10:34.130 --> 00:10:36.250
  • down deep into the soil of God's Word,
  • 00:10:36.260 --> 00:10:41.040
  • we become strong and we become stable.
  • 00:10:41.050 --> 00:10:46.010
  • Here's the third one.
  • 00:10:46.020 --> 00:10:47.270
  • Our spiritual testimony comes from God's Word.
  • 00:10:47.280 --> 00:10:51.070
  • Now, if you're examining a plant,
  • 00:10:51.080 --> 00:10:53.050
  • the first thing that you see about that plant or that tree
  • 00:10:53.060 --> 00:10:56.220
  • that gives you any indication of how the tree is doing
  • 00:10:56.230 --> 00:10:59.090
  • is the leaf.
  • 00:10:59.100 --> 00:11:02.090
  • The Scripture says: "Whose leaf also shall not wither."
  • 00:11:02.100 --> 00:11:08.000
  • The leaf is the outward testimony of this man.
  • 00:11:08.010 --> 00:11:11.160
  • As someone has said: "God's trees are evergreens;
  • 00:11:11.170 --> 00:11:14.210
  • they never lose their testimonies.
  • 00:11:14.220 --> 00:11:17.110
  • They never wither.
  • 00:11:17.120 --> 00:11:18.250
  • Why does the leaf not wither?
  • 00:11:18.260 --> 00:11:20.290
  • Because of the connection.
  • 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:23.050
  • It is connected with the branch, which is connected to the tree,
  • 00:11:23.060 --> 00:11:27.020
  • which is fed by the roots,
  • 00:11:27.030 --> 00:11:28.240
  • which go down deep near a river of water,
  • 00:11:28.250 --> 00:11:31.190
  • which is the Word of God."
  • 00:11:31.200 --> 00:11:34.160
  • There is much talk today
  • 00:11:34.170 --> 00:11:36.030
  • about the blown testimonies of God's people.
  • 00:11:36.040 --> 00:11:40.110
  • I hate to tell you how many I have watched
  • 00:11:40.120 --> 00:11:43.180
  • just in this last year who started out right
  • 00:11:43.190 --> 00:11:47.150
  • and it looked like they were gonna make
  • 00:11:47.160 --> 00:11:49.070
  • a huge difference in the kingdom,
  • 00:11:49.080 --> 00:11:51.070
  • and somehow it's all over and they're finished.
  • 00:11:51.080 --> 00:11:56.180
  • Let me tell you what I know.
  • 00:11:56.190 --> 00:11:58.220
  • That didn't happen overnight.
  • 00:11:58.230 --> 00:12:00.060
  • They didn't go to bed one night
  • 00:12:00.070 --> 00:12:01.220
  • really full of the Word of God and the desire to serve him
  • 00:12:01.230 --> 00:12:04.150
  • and get up the next morning and go out
  • 00:12:04.160 --> 00:12:06.100
  • and do something that totally discounted
  • 00:12:06.110 --> 00:12:08.010
  • everything they supposedly believed.
  • 00:12:08.020 --> 00:12:10.030
  • I remember years ago hearing Chuck Swindoll
  • 00:12:10.040 --> 00:12:12.200
  • as he was talking about marriage,
  • 00:12:12.210 --> 00:12:14.070
  • and he said, "If you get into a marriage
  • 00:12:14.080 --> 00:12:16.010
  • that's coming unglued,
  • 00:12:16.020 --> 00:12:17.150
  • let me tell you it's not a blow-out,
  • 00:12:17.160 --> 00:12:19.200
  • it's a slow leak."
  • 00:12:19.210 --> 00:12:22.070
  • And that's the way it is in our Christian life,
  • 00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:24.010
  • is it not?
  • 00:12:24.020 --> 00:12:25.110
  • We don't become ungodly in a moment,
  • 00:12:25.120 --> 00:12:30.050
  • but we allow the downward gravitational pull
  • 00:12:30.060 --> 00:12:33.000
  • that we have just discussed,
  • 00:12:33.010 --> 00:12:34.250
  • And the next thing we know, our testimony is gone.
  • 00:12:34.260 --> 00:12:40.240
  • The leaf does not wither if it stays connected.
  • 00:12:40.250 --> 00:12:44.130
  • And you will not wither if you stay connected,
  • 00:12:44.140 --> 00:12:48.040
  • connected with God and his Word,
  • 00:12:48.050 --> 00:12:50.140
  • God and his people, God and his church.
  • 00:12:50.150 --> 00:12:54.290
  • Their strength comes from God's Word,
  • 00:12:55.000 --> 00:12:57.030
  • their stability comes from God's Word,
  • 00:12:57.040 --> 00:12:59.050
  • their spiritual testimony comes from God's Word.
  • 00:12:59.060 --> 00:13:02.290
  • And their success comes from God's Word.
  • 00:13:03.000 --> 00:13:06.030
  • I see your ears perk up when I say that.
  • 00:13:06.040 --> 00:13:08.280
  • We all want to be successful.
  • 00:13:08.290 --> 00:13:11.110
  • And that is what the Scripture says:
  • 00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:13.260
  • "That brings forth its fruit in its season,
  • 00:13:13.270 --> 00:13:16.170
  • and whatever he does shall prosper."
  • 00:13:16.180 --> 00:13:21.260
  • That's how the Psalmist describes
  • 00:13:21.270 --> 00:13:23.240
  • the way of the godly man.
  • 00:13:23.250 --> 00:13:27.010
  • But notice the transitional statement in this text:
  • 00:13:27.020 --> 00:13:30.290
  • "But the ungodly are not so."
  • 00:13:31.000 --> 00:13:36.220
  • The way of the ungodly is unfolded for us
  • 00:13:36.230 --> 00:13:39.020
  • in verses 4 through 6: "The ungodly are not so,
  • 00:13:39.030 --> 00:13:42.270
  • but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.
  • 00:13:42.280 --> 00:13:45.250
  • Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
  • 00:13:45.260 --> 00:13:48.220
  • nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
  • 00:13:48.230 --> 00:13:51.180
  • For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
  • 00:13:51.190 --> 00:13:53.200
  • but the way of the ungodly shall perish."
  • 00:13:53.210 --> 00:13:56.210
  • Take everything that I've said today about the righteous
  • 00:13:56.220 --> 00:14:00.160
  • and negate it, and that's the ungodly.
  • 00:14:00.170 --> 00:14:04.110
  • And the ungodly cannot stand in the time of difficulty.
  • 00:14:04.120 --> 00:14:09.080
  • Verse 4 says: "The ungodly are not so,
  • 00:14:09.090 --> 00:14:12.000
  • but they are like the chaff which the wind drives away."
  • 00:14:12.010 --> 00:14:15.240
  • Now, that's a statement that doesn't resonate with us
  • 00:14:15.250 --> 00:14:18.040
  • 'cause we don't know anything about the chaff.
  • 00:14:18.050 --> 00:14:20.220
  • So let me tell you where this illustration came from.
  • 00:14:20.230 --> 00:14:24.030
  • The picture here is of a threshing floor in Israel
  • 00:14:24.040 --> 00:14:28.100
  • at the time of the grain harvest.
  • 00:14:28.110 --> 00:14:30.200
  • The threshing floors of Palestine were built
  • 00:14:30.210 --> 00:14:33.110
  • on hills that would catch the best breeze.
  • 00:14:33.120 --> 00:14:37.100
  • The grain is brought to them.
  • 00:14:37.110 --> 00:14:39.140
  • It is crushed by animals or by threshing instruments
  • 00:14:39.150 --> 00:14:42.190
  • that are drawn over it.
  • 00:14:42.200 --> 00:14:43.290
  • Then the grain is pitched high into the air
  • 00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:47.080
  • where the wind blows the chaff away,
  • 00:14:47.090 --> 00:14:51.040
  • and the heavier grain then falls back down
  • 00:14:51.050 --> 00:14:54.220
  • to the threshing floor and it is collected.
  • 00:14:54.230 --> 00:14:57.290
  • The chaff is scattered or it's burned,
  • 00:14:58.000 --> 00:15:01.150
  • and the Psalmist says
  • 00:15:01.160 --> 00:15:02.290
  • that the person who walks in wickedness
  • 00:15:03.000 --> 00:15:05.090
  • is like the chaff which the wind blows away.
  • 00:15:05.100 --> 00:15:10.270
  • Get this, you are either like a strong tree
  • 00:15:10.280 --> 00:15:17.050
  • that is embedded with its roots into the riverbed
  • 00:15:17.060 --> 00:15:20.190
  • or you're like the chaff
  • 00:15:20.200 --> 00:15:22.190
  • which is being blown away by the wind.
  • 00:15:22.200 --> 00:15:26.230
  • The ungodly cannot stand in the time of difficulty,
  • 00:15:26.240 --> 00:15:31.020
  • when the wind comes,
  • 00:15:31.030 --> 00:15:33.100
  • because there's no substance, there's no source.
  • 00:15:33.110 --> 00:15:37.020
  • The ungodly cannot stand in the day of judgment.
  • 00:15:37.030 --> 00:15:40.130
  • That's the next thing we learn about them.
  • 00:15:40.140 --> 00:15:42.230
  • They cannot stand in the time of difficulty
  • 00:15:42.240 --> 00:15:45.090
  • nor can they stand in the day of judgment.
  • 00:15:45.100 --> 00:15:48.070
  • "Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
  • 00:15:48.080 --> 00:15:51.120
  • nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous."
  • 00:15:51.130 --> 00:15:55.150
  • God is not going to allow both classes of people
  • 00:15:55.160 --> 00:15:58.250
  • to be together throughout eternity
  • 00:15:58.260 --> 00:16:00.260
  • and how awful it will be
  • 00:16:00.270 --> 00:16:03.020
  • to be in eternity, to live forever with those
  • 00:16:03.030 --> 00:16:05.180
  • who are just as wicked as you are,
  • 00:16:05.190 --> 00:16:08.120
  • never seeing a righteous person,
  • 00:16:08.130 --> 00:16:10.140
  • never hearing a righteous word,
  • 00:16:10.150 --> 00:16:12.000
  • never witnessing a righteous act.
  • 00:16:12.010 --> 00:16:14.100
  • Say all you want to about hell and its fire,
  • 00:16:14.110 --> 00:16:17.040
  • this is hell, and this is what it will be like for eternity
  • 00:16:17.050 --> 00:16:21.150
  • to those who do not come to God.
  • 00:16:21.160 --> 00:16:24.170
  • The ungodly cannot stand in the time of difficulty,
  • 00:16:24.180 --> 00:16:27.230
  • they cannot stand in the day of judgment,
  • 00:16:27.240 --> 00:16:30.130
  • and they cannot stand in the presence of God.
  • 00:16:30.140 --> 00:16:33.150
  • Listen to verse 6, the final word of Psalm 1:
  • 00:16:33.160 --> 00:16:37.140
  • "For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
  • 00:16:37.150 --> 00:16:42.020
  • but the way of the ungodly shall perish."
  • 00:16:42.030 --> 00:16:47.090
  • The Lord knows the way of the righteous.
  • 00:16:47.100 --> 00:16:49.070
  • That doesn't mean he's acquainted with us.
  • 00:16:49.080 --> 00:16:51.050
  • The word "know" is the word for intimacy.
  • 00:16:51.060 --> 00:16:54.110
  • But the way of the wicked, says the Psalmist, will perish.
  • 00:16:54.120 --> 00:16:59.110
  • The ungodly sinner,
  • 00:16:59.120 --> 00:17:01.170
  • judged and condemned in the final judgment,
  • 00:17:01.180 --> 00:17:04.050
  • will suffer relentless torment,
  • 00:17:04.060 --> 00:17:06.190
  • forever suffering the eternal wrath of God.
  • 00:17:06.200 --> 00:17:09.220
  • Hear me carefully.
  • 00:17:09.230 --> 00:17:11.020
  • The word "perish" does not mean annihilation.
  • 00:17:11.030 --> 00:17:14.150
  • The Bible does not teach
  • 00:17:14.160 --> 00:17:15.260
  • that the wicked will be annihilated.
  • 00:17:15.270 --> 00:17:17.220
  • I've heard people say, "Yeah, I'm gonna live my life
  • 00:17:17.230 --> 00:17:20.110
  • the way I want to; and if what you say is true,
  • 00:17:20.120 --> 00:17:23.090
  • when I die, I will just die like a dog
  • 00:17:23.100 --> 00:17:25.190
  • and that'll be it and it'll be over."
  • 00:17:25.200 --> 00:17:27.160
  • Not so.
  • 00:17:27.170 --> 00:17:29.200
  • Everybody in this room, everybody in this world
  • 00:17:29.210 --> 00:17:32.120
  • is gonna be alive forever somewhere.
  • 00:17:32.130 --> 00:17:35.020
  • The road you get on will determine
  • 00:17:35.030 --> 00:17:37.060
  • the destiny at which you arrive.
  • 00:17:37.070 --> 00:17:39.260
  • But don't let anybody tell you
  • 00:17:39.270 --> 00:17:41.160
  • that perishing means annihilation.
  • 00:17:41.170 --> 00:17:46.160
  • To be--to perish means to be separated from God.
  • 00:17:46.170 --> 00:17:52.020
  • Now, this is all very challenging.
  • 00:17:52.030 --> 00:17:53.240
  • It's like much of the Bible for me.
  • 00:17:53.250 --> 00:17:57.070
  • The Bible says: "Blessed is the man,"
  • 00:17:57.080 --> 00:17:58.290
  • then it describes how this blessed man lives
  • 00:17:59.000 --> 00:18:00.290
  • and I go through this and I think, you know,
  • 00:18:01.000 --> 00:18:03.210
  • "I do some of that and some of it I don't.
  • 00:18:03.220 --> 00:18:05.120
  • How does anybody live like that?"
  • 00:18:05.130 --> 00:18:09.090
  • I remember reading a story about a man named Joseph Flacks
  • 00:18:09.100 --> 00:18:13.100
  • who was visiting Palestine in the early 20th century,
  • 00:18:13.110 --> 00:18:16.240
  • and he had an opportunity
  • 00:18:16.250 --> 00:18:18.040
  • to address a gathering of Jews and Arabs
  • 00:18:18.050 --> 00:18:20.260
  • and he decided to speak on the Psalm
  • 00:18:20.270 --> 00:18:23.000
  • that I've spoken on today, Psalm 1.
  • 00:18:23.010 --> 00:18:26.100
  • So he read it in Hebrew and then he asked,
  • 00:18:26.110 --> 00:18:30.080
  • "Who is this blessed man of whom the Psalmist speaks?
  • 00:18:30.090 --> 00:18:35.120
  • This man who never walked in the counsel of the wicked
  • 00:18:35.130 --> 00:18:39.020
  • or stood in the way of sinners
  • 00:18:39.030 --> 00:18:40.290
  • or sat in the seat of the scorners,
  • 00:18:41.000 --> 00:18:43.120
  • who is this man?"
  • 00:18:43.130 --> 00:18:45.180
  • And nobody spoke, and so Flacks said,
  • 00:18:45.190 --> 00:18:48.230
  • "Was it our great father Abraham?"
  • 00:18:48.240 --> 00:18:51.170
  • And a man stood up and he said,
  • 00:18:51.180 --> 00:18:53.180
  • "No, it cannot be Abraham.
  • 00:18:53.190 --> 00:18:55.090
  • Abraham denied his wife and told a lie about her."
  • 00:18:55.100 --> 00:19:00.090
  • "Well, how about the law-giver Moses," said Flacks.
  • 00:19:00.100 --> 00:19:03.110
  • "No," someone said.
  • 00:19:03.120 --> 00:19:04.240
  • "It cannot be Moses.
  • 00:19:04.250 --> 00:19:06.110
  • He killed a man
  • 00:19:06.120 --> 00:19:07.210
  • and he lost his temper by the waters of Meribah."
  • 00:19:07.220 --> 00:19:12.070
  • And then Flacks suggested David, could it be David?
  • 00:19:12.080 --> 00:19:15.280
  • "It was not David," said someone,
  • 00:19:15.290 --> 00:19:18.230
  • "because he committed adultery and he committed murder."
  • 00:19:18.240 --> 00:19:23.000
  • And there was a long silence, and then an elderly Jew stood up
  • 00:19:23.010 --> 00:19:29.280
  • and said, "My brother, I have this little book here.
  • 00:19:29.290 --> 00:19:34.130
  • It's called the New Testament.
  • 00:19:34.140 --> 00:19:36.260
  • I've been reading it,
  • 00:19:36.270 --> 00:19:38.270
  • and if I could believe this book,
  • 00:19:38.280 --> 00:19:41.160
  • if I could be sure that it is true,
  • 00:19:41.170 --> 00:19:43.230
  • I would say that the man of the first Psalm
  • 00:19:43.240 --> 00:19:47.020
  • is Jesus of Nazareth."
  • 00:19:47.030 --> 00:19:53.080
  • Which tells me that you and I, we don't have any hope
  • 00:19:53.090 --> 00:19:57.110
  • of living life on this high road in our own energy.
  • 00:19:57.120 --> 00:20:03.030
  • This very calling is consummated by the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 00:20:03.040 --> 00:20:07.150
  • It is he who lives
  • 00:20:07.160 --> 00:20:09.060
  • in perfect communion with his Father.
  • 00:20:09.070 --> 00:20:12.170
  • It is he who delights in the Word of God.
  • 00:20:12.180 --> 00:20:15.050
  • It is he who prospers in all his way.
  • 00:20:15.060 --> 00:20:17.260
  • In Christ, we become the blessed person of Psalm 1.
  • 00:20:17.270 --> 00:20:21.290
  • He is the God man who fulfills the divine command.
  • 00:20:22.000 --> 00:20:25.170
  • It is he who gives us his righteousness
  • 00:20:25.180 --> 00:20:29.120
  • and, as we live in communion with him,
  • 00:20:29.130 --> 00:20:31.180
  • we can become that tree planted by the waters.
  • 00:20:31.190 --> 00:20:36.250
  • And our way will be known to the Lord,
  • 00:20:36.260 --> 00:20:39.190
  • and as we live in communion with him,
  • 00:20:39.200 --> 00:20:41.240
  • his Psalms become our Psalms
  • 00:20:41.250 --> 00:20:45.050
  • and the road to happiness, to blessing is ours
  • 00:20:45.060 --> 00:20:49.070
  • because, first of all, it is his and we are in Christ.
  • 00:20:49.080 --> 00:20:57.130
  • And I would just leave you with two takeaway applications.
  • 00:20:57.140 --> 00:21:02.250
  • If this Psalm says anything,
  • 00:21:02.260 --> 00:21:04.060
  • it says that for us to stay on the right road
  • 00:21:04.070 --> 00:21:08.050
  • and not get on the detours
  • 00:21:08.060 --> 00:21:09.160
  • that so often appeal to us even as Christians,
  • 00:21:09.170 --> 00:21:13.140
  • two things we need to be proactive about.
  • 00:21:13.150 --> 00:21:17.210
  • First of all, stay in the written Word.
  • 00:21:17.220 --> 00:21:22.230
  • Read the Word.
  • 00:21:22.240 --> 00:21:24.120
  • And here's the second thing.
  • 00:21:24.130 --> 00:21:25.290
  • When you're in the written Word, don't forget
  • 00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:28.190
  • that the written Word is all about the living Word.
  • 00:21:28.200 --> 00:21:32.120
  • Jesus is called the Word of God.
  • 00:21:32.130 --> 00:21:35.110
  • We don't study the living Word unless we really understand
  • 00:21:35.120 --> 00:21:39.270
  • that the reason we study the written Word is so we
  • 00:21:39.280 --> 00:21:42.250
  • can get to better understand the living Word.
  • 00:21:42.260 --> 00:21:45.070
  • Here's a good illustration.
  • 00:21:45.080 --> 00:21:47.130
  • When I was in college,
  • 00:21:47.140 --> 00:21:49.260
  • after my junior year at Cedarville,
  • 00:21:49.270 --> 00:21:52.040
  • I had just met Donna.
  • 00:21:52.050 --> 00:21:53.140
  • We kind of had fallen in love and we were talking about
  • 00:21:53.150 --> 00:21:56.010
  • getting married after graduation.
  • 00:21:56.020 --> 00:21:59.130
  • But I was in a--I know this is gonna take a lot of faith.
  • 00:21:59.140 --> 00:22:01.240
  • I was in a quartet, and we traveled for a whole summer
  • 00:22:01.250 --> 00:22:06.160
  • and we sang at churches all across the Midwest,
  • 00:22:06.170 --> 00:22:09.020
  • a different church every night.
  • 00:22:09.030 --> 00:22:10.230
  • Pulled a U-Haul trailer behind us with all our luggage
  • 00:22:10.240 --> 00:22:13.110
  • and some of our guys played instruments,
  • 00:22:13.120 --> 00:22:15.070
  • and so when I said goodbye to Donna
  • 00:22:15.080 --> 00:22:18.080
  • and she went home to work in Cleveland
  • 00:22:18.090 --> 00:22:20.050
  • to make enough money to come back to college
  • 00:22:20.060 --> 00:22:23.110
  • and I went off on this tour
  • 00:22:23.120 --> 00:22:24.220
  • and we wrote letters to each other every single day.
  • 00:22:24.230 --> 00:22:29.160
  • I know that sounds probably not true, but it's true.
  • 00:22:29.170 --> 00:22:33.020
  • In fact, I have those letters hidden in a safe place.
  • 00:22:33.030 --> 00:22:39.050
  • No, you can't ever see 'em.
  • 00:22:39.060 --> 00:22:43.050
  • Let me tell you what happened. Listen to me, listen to me.
  • 00:22:43.060 --> 00:22:45.230
  • Every time we got to a church,
  • 00:22:45.240 --> 00:22:48.290
  • all the guys would get out of the car and they'd go and see
  • 00:22:49.000 --> 00:22:51.040
  • what kind of an auditorium it has.
  • 00:22:51.050 --> 00:22:52.140
  • Not me, I went straight to the office to see,
  • 00:22:52.150 --> 00:22:55.260
  • did you get any mail?
  • 00:22:55.270 --> 00:22:58.070
  • Did you get any mail?
  • 00:23:00.210 --> 00:23:03.070
  • And when they would give me the letter,
  • 00:23:03.080 --> 00:23:05.060
  • I'd get off of the-- out of the way.
  • 00:23:05.070 --> 00:23:07.100
  • I'd find some quiet corner and I'd sit down.
  • 00:23:07.110 --> 00:23:09.100
  • You know what, I didn't read that letter to see
  • 00:23:09.110 --> 00:23:11.010
  • what kind of grammar she used.
  • 00:23:11.020 --> 00:23:14.110
  • I read that letter because in that letter was Donna.
  • 00:23:14.120 --> 00:23:19.030
  • In that letter was the person I loved,
  • 00:23:19.040 --> 00:23:22.190
  • and love deeply today.
  • 00:23:22.200 --> 00:23:25.270
  • When I come to this book which is the letter of God,
  • 00:23:25.280 --> 00:23:29.210
  • I read it, I examine it, I outline it.
  • 00:23:29.220 --> 00:23:33.130
  • But, men and women,
  • 00:23:33.140 --> 00:23:34.230
  • this is God's love letter to me and to you.
  • 00:23:34.240 --> 00:23:39.090
  • And once we understand that
  • 00:23:39.100 --> 00:23:41.060
  • and we begin to look at the written Word,
  • 00:23:41.070 --> 00:23:43.150
  • we will see the living Word just as we did today.
  • 00:23:43.160 --> 00:23:47.100
  • Who could imagine finding Jesus in Psalm 1?
  • 00:23:47.110 --> 00:23:51.140
  • But he's there.
  • 00:23:51.150 --> 00:23:52.280
  • In fact, he's everywhere throughout all of the Scripture
  • 00:23:52.290 --> 00:23:56.070
  • if you just look for him.
  • 00:23:56.080 --> 00:23:58.070
  • If you wanna stay happy, if you wanna be "blessed blessed,"
  • 00:23:58.080 --> 00:24:03.230
  • "happy happy," my counsel to you is stay in the written Word
  • 00:24:03.240 --> 00:24:10.160
  • so you can find the living Word,
  • 00:24:10.170 --> 00:24:14.220
  • and fall in love with him all over again
  • 00:24:14.230 --> 00:24:17.270
  • and you will discover blessed is that man.
  • 00:24:17.280 --> 00:24:22.000

  • 00:25:29.110 --> 00:25:30.260
  • for today's program, here is Dr. Jeremiah.
  • 00:25:30.270 --> 00:25:33.230
  • Dr. Jeremiah: I've always loved the opening words of Psalm 1:
  • 00:25:34.260 --> 00:25:38.110
  • "How blessed is the man."
  • 00:25:38.120 --> 00:25:40.100
  • Think about it.
  • 00:25:40.110 --> 00:25:41.200
  • Who would not want to live a blessed and happy life?
  • 00:25:41.210 --> 00:25:45.130
  • More specifically,
  • 00:25:45.140 --> 00:25:46.230
  • who wouldn't want to have a blessed year?
  • 00:25:46.240 --> 00:25:50.000
  • That's the heart of what the Psalmist wrote.
  • 00:25:50.010 --> 00:25:52.090
  • Blessedness comes from living according to the Word of God,
  • 00:25:52.100 --> 00:25:56.010
  • and what better way to start the New Year?
  • 00:25:56.020 --> 00:26:00.070
  • I would love to send you two free gifts

  • And now, Dr. Jeremiah has a Bible
  • 00:26:30.250 --> 00:26:33.050

  • announcer: Next time, on "Turning Point."
  • 00:26:51.200 --> 00:26:53.170
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Moses has outlived Voltaire,
  • 00:26:54.060 --> 00:26:57.070
  • Isaiah has outlasted Ingersoll,
  • 00:26:57.080 --> 00:27:00.080
  • the apostles have outsmarted the agnostics,
  • 00:27:00.090 --> 00:27:03.050
  • and the prophets have overpowered the professors.
  • 00:27:03.060 --> 00:27:06.050
  • And the Bible still stands
  • 00:27:06.060 --> 00:27:07.240
  • as God's wonderful message to man.
  • 00:27:07.250 --> 00:27:10.270
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:27:10.280 --> 00:27:14.150
  • announcer: Join Dr. Jeremiah next time for a special message
  • 00:27:15.200 --> 00:27:18.110
  • from Madison Square Garden in New York City,
  • 00:27:18.120 --> 00:27:21.060
  • here on "Turning Point."
