  • 00:00:00.210 --> 00:00:10.200
  • 00:00:10.210 --> 00:00:20.130
  • Ed Young: Did you know that God knows more about you
  • 00:00:20.140 --> 00:00:23.130
  • than you know about you?
  • 00:00:23.140 --> 00:00:25.000
  • Did you realize that?
  • 00:00:25.010 --> 00:00:26.100
  • Huh?
  • 00:00:26.110 --> 00:00:28.020
  • Did you realize that God loves you more than you love yourself?
  • 00:00:28.030 --> 00:00:32.170
  • Did you realize that?
  • 00:00:32.180 --> 00:00:35.150
  • Did you know that God knows what is best for you more than you
  • 00:00:35.160 --> 00:00:40.140
  • know that what is best for yourself?
  • 00:00:40.150 --> 00:00:42.100
  • Do you understand that?
  • 00:00:42.110 --> 00:00:43.220
  • You got that?
  • 00:00:43.230 --> 00:00:45.130
  • Now, does anybody think they're wiser than God?
  • 00:00:45.140 --> 00:00:50.030
  • God is wiser than you and wiser than I am; therefore, we see
  • 00:00:50.040 --> 00:00:55.280
  • that all things are working together for our good, for his
  • 00:00:55.290 --> 00:01:00.220
  • glory to those who love him and those who are called
  • 00:01:00.230 --> 00:01:03.270
  • received his way of life, according to his purpose.
  • 00:01:03.280 --> 00:01:06.270
  • That was the message that the Nation of Israel was
  • 00:01:06.280 --> 00:01:12.100
  • to carry to the rest of the world.
  • 00:01:12.110 --> 00:01:16.260
  • Isn't that interesting?
  • 00:01:16.270 --> 00:01:19.150
  • Isn't that right over the middle the plate?
  • 00:01:19.160 --> 00:01:22.000
  • You know, Paul says, in 2 Timothy,
  • 00:01:22.010 --> 00:01:24.070
  • an interesting little verse.
  • 00:01:24.080 --> 00:01:25.170
  • He says, "Those who are always hearing, and never come
  • 00:01:25.180 --> 00:01:30.250
  • to a knowledge of God."
  • 00:01:30.260 --> 00:01:32.050
  • What does that mean?
  • 00:01:32.060 --> 00:01:33.150
  • It means a lot of us sort of stick around in church, we
  • 00:01:33.160 --> 00:01:36.270
  • come and go, we're up and down and we're always
  • 00:01:36.280 --> 00:01:39.130
  • hearing, but we never live it.
  • 00:01:39.140 --> 00:01:43.030
  • We never put that hearing, that knowledge to God into our lives,
  • 00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:49.090
  • and therefore, we're wondering why we're up, we're down, we're
  • 00:01:49.100 --> 00:01:53.100
  • depressed, why we're--
  • 00:01:53.110 --> 00:01:54.290
  • Let me tell ya something, God wants every one of us to have
  • 00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:59.030
  • a life that's filled with pleasure, a life that's
  • 00:01:59.040 --> 00:02:02.270
  • filled with happiness, a life that is filled with joy.
  • 00:02:02.280 --> 00:02:05.250
  • But in the process, there is that growth factor.
  • 00:02:05.260 --> 00:02:11.250
  • In the Garden of Eden there was not a little sign that read,
  • 00:02:11.260 --> 00:02:16.230
  • "No snakes in the grass are allowed."
  • 00:02:16.240 --> 00:02:19.280
  • Therefore, we are to understand that in life, that God is
  • 00:02:23.050 --> 00:02:29.200
  • working out his divine formula for all of us, and we want
  • 00:02:29.210 --> 00:02:34.120
  • to get in on that and live that kind of life.
  • 00:02:34.130 --> 00:02:39.200
  • That's how God wants us all to live.
  • 00:02:39.210 --> 00:02:42.020
  • What's it going to take to awaken somebody, a bolt
  • 00:02:42.030 --> 00:02:45.110
  • of lightning?
  • 00:02:45.120 --> 00:02:47.120
  • Is it gonna take you inherit $50 billion, or you lose everything
  • 00:02:48.060 --> 00:02:52.200
  • you got, or you're terminally ill?
  • 00:02:52.210 --> 00:02:54.280
  • What does God have to use in anybody's life, your life
  • 00:02:54.290 --> 00:02:58.030
  • and my life, for us not to just keep hearing without beginning
  • 00:02:58.040 --> 00:03:02.200
  • to live it out?
  • 00:03:02.210 --> 00:03:04.210
  • Now, we see in this big stroke of history we've been reading
  • 00:03:06.180 --> 00:03:11.100
  • the Bible, we get overwhelmed with it, and we see how God's
  • 00:03:11.110 --> 00:03:15.040
  • working the lives of nations, tribes, families, cultures,
  • 00:03:15.050 --> 00:03:21.050
  • cities, individuals, and so we're caught up in this
  • 00:03:23.090 --> 00:03:29.090
  • whole magnificent story of salvation history.
  • 00:03:29.100 --> 00:03:34.230
  • That's the Bible tryin' to teach all of us that basic verse
  • 00:03:34.240 --> 00:03:38.190
  • in Romans 8:28, "All things work together for good to those who
  • 00:03:38.200 --> 00:03:43.040
  • love the Lord and those who are the called according
  • 00:03:43.050 --> 00:03:45.150
  • to His purpose."
  • 00:03:45.160 --> 00:03:46.250
  • Not that all things work together for good to anybody
  • 00:03:46.260 --> 00:03:48.290
  • and everybody.
  • 00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:50.090
  • It's those who love the Lord and those who are called
  • 00:03:50.100 --> 00:03:52.210
  • according to his purpose; and that's what he tried
  • 00:03:52.220 --> 00:03:55.110
  • to teach in a zillion different ways to all the Jews, so they
  • 00:03:55.120 --> 00:04:01.140
  • would be the standard and the mark of salvation to all
  • 00:04:02.210 --> 00:04:08.050
  • the rest of the world, which in the Bible
  • 00:04:08.060 --> 00:04:10.100
  • are called Gentiles.
  • 00:04:10.110 --> 00:04:13.070
  • Okay, now we come to chapter 2 of the Book of Joshua, and, oh,
  • 00:04:13.080 --> 00:04:19.080
  • it just brings it right home.
  • 00:04:21.190 --> 00:04:25.050
  • We see that God is interested not only in nations
  • 00:04:25.060 --> 00:04:29.100
  • but individuals, and we run into something that's sort of is
  • 00:04:29.110 --> 00:04:35.110
  • shocking at first.
  • 00:04:35.140 --> 00:04:36.260
  • We're gonna discover three things in this chapter.
  • 00:04:36.270 --> 00:04:41.100
  • Preview, number one: God uses unlikely people.
  • 00:04:41.110 --> 00:04:47.110
  • Number two: God not only uses unlikely people, he uses
  • 00:04:49.290 --> 00:04:59.280
  • unnecessary, ordinary people.
  • 00:04:59.290 --> 00:05:02.290
  • Unlikely people, ordinary people, you know, just
  • 00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:07.110
  • pedestrian-type people.
  • 00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:09.150
  • He uses unlikely, ordinary people
  • 00:05:09.160 --> 00:05:12.050
  • to do extraordinary things.
  • 00:05:12.060 --> 00:05:18.000
  • Watch how this works in Joshua chapter number 2.
  • 00:05:18.010 --> 00:05:23.030
  • It is breathtaking!
  • 00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:26.160
  • It's a spy story.
  • 00:05:26.170 --> 00:05:28.110
  • Do ya like spy stories?
  • 00:05:28.120 --> 00:05:30.080
  • Right in the middle of the powerful revelation
  • 00:05:30.090 --> 00:05:34.290
  • of God.
  • 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:36.090
  • Joshua chapter number 2, look at it.
  • 00:05:36.100 --> 00:05:38.280
  • First of all, we see how he uses unlikely people.
  • 00:05:38.290 --> 00:05:44.290
  • "So they came to the house of a harlot named Rahab
  • 00:05:45.090 --> 00:05:50.020
  • and lodged there."
  • 00:05:50.030 --> 00:05:53.090
  • Joshua sent out two spies to spy out the land before they went
  • 00:05:53.100 --> 00:05:59.100
  • in their conquest.
  • 00:05:59.110 --> 00:06:01.110
  • And these two spies were to determine the strength
  • 00:06:01.120 --> 00:06:03.290
  • of Jericho.
  • 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:05.090
  • Jericho was right in their sights.
  • 00:06:05.100 --> 00:06:06.190
  • Why Jericho?
  • 00:06:06.200 --> 00:06:08.030
  • Jericho was about seven miles the other side of the Jordan,
  • 00:06:08.040 --> 00:06:12.090
  • and it was the opening that would absolutely split Israel
  • 00:06:12.100 --> 00:06:16.220
  • into two parts: the northern part and the southern part.
  • 00:06:16.230 --> 00:06:20.210
  • Because Israel then was controlled by a lot
  • 00:06:20.220 --> 00:06:23.280
  • of city-states.
  • 00:06:23.290 --> 00:06:26.290
  • And they had these little city-states, everyone had their
  • 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:29.240
  • king and their army and their government, and that's how all
  • 00:06:29.250 --> 00:06:33.150
  • of Israel operated.
  • 00:06:33.160 --> 00:06:34.250
  • So, Joshua saw they had to take Jericho, it would split Israel
  • 00:06:34.260 --> 00:06:39.030
  • in half, so the city-states would not unite and do battle
  • 00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:43.250
  • against Israel.
  • 00:06:43.260 --> 00:06:46.070
  • And so he sent out two spies to look at the land, to see
  • 00:06:46.080 --> 00:06:49.290
  • the landscape and how they would do battle, and they sent
  • 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:53.170
  • into Jericho and there in Jericho--
  • 00:06:53.180 --> 00:06:56.070
  • did you read what I said?
  • 00:06:56.080 --> 00:06:59.210
  • "And they went and came to the house of a harlot
  • 00:06:59.220 --> 00:07:02.250
  • named Rahab."
  • 00:07:02.260 --> 00:07:05.060
  • Rahab ran the best little chicken farm in Jericho.
  • 00:07:05.070 --> 00:07:11.070
  • Yeah.
  • 00:07:15.170 --> 00:07:16.260
  • Talk about an unlikely person.
  • 00:07:16.270 --> 00:07:20.020
  • My, my, my!
  • 00:07:20.030 --> 00:07:22.260
  • How unlikely can you get?
  • 00:07:22.270 --> 00:07:25.290
  • Anthropologists, archaeologists who studied Jericho and these
  • 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:29.120
  • other city states said that sexually-transmitted diseases
  • 00:07:29.130 --> 00:07:33.050
  • were rampant.
  • 00:07:33.060 --> 00:07:35.100
  • There was all kinds of perversion going on.
  • 00:07:35.110 --> 00:07:37.180
  • You read the Bible, we have the idea that all the confusion
  • 00:07:37.190 --> 00:07:40.250
  • in the area of sexuality that we read that absolutely
  • 00:07:40.260 --> 00:07:43.240
  • staggers us.
  • 00:07:43.250 --> 00:07:45.220
  • The gay, the lesbians, transvestites, queers,
  • 00:07:45.230 --> 00:07:51.230
  • all the different relationships there.
  • 00:07:56.080 --> 00:07:57.210
  • And we wonder, we sit back and say, "How in the world
  • 00:07:57.220 --> 00:08:01.140
  • do we relate?"
  • 00:08:01.150 --> 00:08:04.230
  • And you can relate by condoning and forget the biblical ethics.
  • 00:08:04.240 --> 00:08:10.240
  • You can relate by condemning, forgetting the teaching
  • 00:08:10.280 --> 00:08:14.120
  • of the Bible.
  • 00:08:14.130 --> 00:08:16.050
  • How do we relate to all these different groups that are have--
  • 00:08:16.060 --> 00:08:20.230
  • multiplicity of different things?
  • 00:08:20.240 --> 00:08:25.250
  • Relate the way the Bible teaches us.
  • 00:08:25.260 --> 00:08:29.030
  • We relate in the basis of love and grace.
  • 00:08:29.040 --> 00:08:32.050
  • We present Jesus Christ as God's son, as the answer to life, as
  • 00:08:32.060 --> 00:08:38.040
  • the answer to a new life, and we do not let anyone think
  • 00:08:38.050 --> 00:08:44.050
  • the Bible is a book of hatred, it's the book of viciousness,
  • 00:08:44.060 --> 00:08:48.210
  • it's a book of condemnation, and those outside the church,
  • 00:08:48.220 --> 00:08:52.270
  • they look upon the church like this, and they should look
  • 00:08:52.280 --> 00:08:55.240
  • upon the church as a loving, accepting community
  • 00:08:55.250 --> 00:08:59.090
  • without compromising Biblical ethical, moral ethics.
  • 00:08:59.100 --> 00:09:05.070
  • Let me put it like this.
  • 00:09:05.080 --> 00:09:08.050
  • A person who is physically starving to death eats food that
  • 00:09:08.060 --> 00:09:14.060
  • is unhealthy.
  • 00:09:16.280 --> 00:09:18.280
  • A person who is emotionally starving to death enters
  • 00:09:18.290 --> 00:09:23.250
  • sometimes into relationships that are unhealthy,
  • 00:09:23.260 --> 00:09:28.220
  • and therefore, we in the church, we are to be receptive
  • 00:09:28.230 --> 00:09:33.010
  • and understand that when Jesus Christ comes into a life,
  • 00:09:33.020 --> 00:09:37.130
  • Jesus Christ can take any life, anytime, anywhere, anytime,
  • 00:09:37.140 --> 00:09:42.050
  • in any situation, even a harlot in Jericho and anybody else
  • 00:09:42.060 --> 00:09:48.060
  • and give them new life and cleanliness, and they move
  • 00:09:51.240 --> 00:09:56.120
  • from shame and guilt and condemnation and questions
  • 00:09:56.130 --> 00:09:59.290
  • and restlessness to a redeemed life.
  • 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:02.290
  • And we in the church have to have open arms and say,
  • 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:06.150
  • "We love you.
  • 00:10:06.160 --> 00:10:07.250
  • We understand and we want to see you come to new life
  • 00:10:07.260 --> 00:10:12.170
  • and to a new thrust in your life."
  • 00:10:12.180 --> 00:10:14.170
  • Now, if we were a member, lest we forget of the church
  • 00:10:14.180 --> 00:10:20.180
  • in Corinth.
  • 00:10:20.250 --> 00:10:25.080
  • Let me show ya a list about the membership in Corinth.
  • 00:10:25.090 --> 00:10:30.040
  • Let's talk about the members.
  • 00:10:30.050 --> 00:10:32.040
  • Paul says, "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit
  • 00:10:32.050 --> 00:10:37.130
  • the kingdom of God?
  • 00:10:37.140 --> 00:10:39.210
  • Do not be deceived.
  • 00:10:39.220 --> 00:10:41.040
  • Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers,
  • 00:10:41.050 --> 00:10:47.050
  • nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous,
  • 00:10:47.060 --> 00:10:54.160
  • nor drunkards, nor revelers, nor extortioners will inherit
  • 00:10:54.170 --> 00:10:59.270
  • the kingdom of God," and what?
  • 00:10:59.280 --> 00:11:01.260
  • What?
  • 00:11:01.270 --> 00:11:03.060
  • "And such were some of you."
  • 00:11:03.070 --> 00:11:06.290
  • In our church, there are people who have come from all kinds
  • 00:11:11.210 --> 00:11:15.000
  • of backgrounds, all kind relationship, and have entered
  • 00:11:15.010 --> 00:11:18.270
  • into unhealthy relationship, made disastrous decision,
  • 00:11:18.280 --> 00:11:22.200
  • but thank God by his grace, by his power, and by his blood,
  • 00:11:22.210 --> 00:11:28.210
  • new life has been offered.
  • 00:11:28.240 --> 00:11:30.170
  • That is what the church is, folks.
  • 00:11:30.180 --> 00:11:32.160
  • Make no mistake about it.
  • 00:11:32.170 --> 00:11:34.120
  • We do not condone as some churches do and go
  • 00:11:34.130 --> 00:11:39.270
  • through biblical confusion and confusing gymnastic
  • 00:11:39.280 --> 00:11:44.060
  • of exegesis, but we do not condemn; that's not our thing.
  • 00:11:44.070 --> 00:11:48.290
  • We say, "Come, experience new life and a fresh beginning."
  • 00:11:49.000 --> 00:11:54.030
  • And hundreds and hundreds of in our church have gone
  • 00:11:54.040 --> 00:11:58.030
  • through this and have come out clean and new and bright
  • 00:11:58.040 --> 00:12:01.240
  • and reborn.
  • 00:12:01.250 --> 00:12:03.090
  • That is who we are as a family of God.
  • 00:12:03.100 --> 00:12:07.010
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:12:07.020 --> 00:12:11.000
  • God uses unlikely people, even somebody who ran the best little
  • 00:12:11.010 --> 00:12:16.260
  • chicken farm in Jericho.
  • 00:12:16.270 --> 00:12:20.250
  • Not only that, God uses ordinary people.
  • 00:12:20.260 --> 00:12:26.260
  • Ordinary people.
  • 00:12:26.270 --> 00:12:28.190
  • We see this with Rahab again right here in our study.
  • 00:12:28.200 --> 00:12:32.080
  • Ordinary people that we see in our Scripture.
  • 00:12:32.090 --> 00:12:36.100
  • Go back to Joshua, if you would.
  • 00:12:36.110 --> 00:12:39.150
  • And we read there, beginning oh, about the middle
  • 00:12:39.160 --> 00:12:42.120
  • of the paragraph there.
  • 00:12:42.130 --> 00:12:46.070
  • It says, "Now, before they lay down, she came up to them
  • 00:12:46.080 --> 00:12:49.290
  • on the roof."
  • 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:51.090
  • These are the two spies.
  • 00:12:51.100 --> 00:12:52.250
  • "And she said to the man," look what she said.
  • 00:12:52.260 --> 00:12:55.010
  • "I know that the Lord has given you the land, and the terror
  • 00:12:55.020 --> 00:12:59.120
  • of you has fall on us and that all the inhabitants of the land
  • 00:12:59.130 --> 00:13:03.190
  • are fainthearted because of you.
  • 00:13:03.200 --> 00:13:06.140
  • For we have heard how the Lord dried up the waters of the Red
  • 00:13:06.150 --> 00:13:11.170
  • Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did,
  • 00:13:11.180 --> 00:13:14.180
  • the two Kings of the Amorites, who were on the other side
  • 00:13:14.190 --> 00:13:17.270
  • of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed.
  • 00:13:17.280 --> 00:13:22.140
  • And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted.
  • 00:13:22.150 --> 00:13:26.200
  • Neither did there remain any more courage for any of us
  • 00:13:26.210 --> 00:13:29.240
  • because of you.
  • 00:13:29.250 --> 00:13:31.060
  • For the Lord, your God, he is a God in Heaven
  • 00:13:31.070 --> 00:13:34.180
  • above and on Earth beneath."
  • 00:13:34.190 --> 00:13:37.000
  • Now look!
  • 00:13:37.010 --> 00:13:38.100
  • This was an ordinary woman.
  • 00:13:38.110 --> 00:13:41.010
  • What did she understand?
  • 00:13:41.020 --> 00:13:44.060
  • She understood, first of all, that the land where the city
  • 00:13:44.070 --> 00:13:50.000
  • dwelt was owned by the Jews.
  • 00:13:50.010 --> 00:13:52.180
  • She knew about Abraham and Isaac.
  • 00:13:52.190 --> 00:13:55.020
  • She said, "I know this land is yours.
  • 00:13:55.030 --> 00:13:56.260
  • I know that the Lord will give you this land."
  • 00:13:56.270 --> 00:13:59.220
  • She also said, "We have heard how the Red Sea parted and
  • 00:13:59.230 --> 00:14:03.240
  • 2 million of you guys came over that dry land
  • 00:14:03.250 --> 00:14:07.110
  • in the Red Sea."
  • 00:14:07.120 --> 00:14:08.210
  • You can't keep that a secret, can you?
  • 00:14:08.220 --> 00:14:10.130
  • Don't tell anybody.
  • 00:14:10.140 --> 00:14:12.170
  • She knew about it in Jericho.
  • 00:14:12.180 --> 00:14:14.060
  • Everybody in Jericho knew about it.
  • 00:14:14.070 --> 00:14:16.230
  • Everybody in Jericho knew they'd done battled the Amorites.
  • 00:14:16.240 --> 00:14:20.090
  • And Sihon and Og, those two pagan kings, they were
  • 00:14:20.100 --> 00:14:24.090
  • obliterated by the Israelites.
  • 00:14:24.100 --> 00:14:25.270
  • They knew about that.
  • 00:14:25.280 --> 00:14:27.180
  • And all she says, "We're all frightened.
  • 00:14:27.190 --> 00:14:30.040
  • Our hearts have melted because 2 million of you are here,
  • 00:14:30.050 --> 00:14:34.150
  • 7 miles away on the other side of the Jordan River.
  • 00:14:34.160 --> 00:14:39.080
  • And we know, I know," she says, "That the Lord God that you
  • 00:14:39.090 --> 00:14:44.140
  • worship is the God of the heavens and the God
  • 00:14:44.150 --> 00:14:47.150
  • of the Earth."
  • 00:14:47.160 --> 00:14:48.250
  • What is she saying?
  • 00:14:48.260 --> 00:14:50.050
  • "I see that your God is the real God.
  • 00:14:50.060 --> 00:14:52.140
  • He's the real thing."
  • 00:14:52.150 --> 00:14:54.000
  • Now, notice something.
  • 00:14:54.010 --> 00:14:56.150
  • Was this prostitute the only one in Jericho who knew those facts?
  • 00:14:56.160 --> 00:15:01.090
  • No, everybody knew the facts.
  • 00:15:01.100 --> 00:15:03.100
  • And the gate was open, they could've come out, they were
  • 00:15:03.110 --> 00:15:05.230
  • under siege.
  • 00:15:05.240 --> 00:15:07.250
  • But they didn't.
  • 00:15:07.260 --> 00:15:09.050
  • They didn't act on those facts.
  • 00:15:09.060 --> 00:15:11.250
  • Like in 2 Timothy, again, Paul says, "Always hearing but never
  • 00:15:11.260 --> 00:15:17.030
  • coming to the knowledge of truth."
  • 00:15:17.040 --> 00:15:18.230
  • That's it, isn't it?
  • 00:15:18.240 --> 00:15:20.030
  • "Oh, we just hear, hear, hear.
  • 00:15:20.040 --> 00:15:21.130
  • We know this is a true and living God,
  • 00:15:21.140 --> 00:15:23.240
  • and we know that."
  • 00:15:23.250 --> 00:15:25.040
  • But they never responded by faith and went outside those
  • 00:15:25.050 --> 00:15:27.220
  • gates and responded to what God was doing with the land.
  • 00:15:27.230 --> 00:15:33.230
  • Amazing, isn't it?
  • 00:15:34.170 --> 00:15:36.240
  • How they knew, and they didn't respond.
  • 00:15:36.250 --> 00:15:39.030
  • The gates were opened!
  • 00:15:39.040 --> 00:15:40.130
  • You could go back in Genesis chapter 6.
  • 00:15:40.140 --> 00:15:44.050
  • Here's Noah and his family 120 years they're building an ark,
  • 00:15:44.060 --> 00:15:48.270
  • a giant boat, and he's hammering with one hand, and the gate
  • 00:15:48.280 --> 00:15:52.200
  • to the ark, the door of the ark was opened up and said, "Hey,
  • 00:15:52.210 --> 00:15:55.090
  • guys, we're gonna be judged.
  • 00:15:55.100 --> 00:15:57.000
  • Go in the ark.
  • 00:15:57.010 --> 00:15:58.100
  • There's gonna be a flood."
  • 00:15:58.110 --> 00:15:59.200
  • Nobody went in, the door was open.
  • 00:15:59.210 --> 00:16:02.120
  • The door was open right here, I believe, for those pagan,
  • 00:16:02.130 --> 00:16:05.170
  • hardhearted, cold, demonic Canaanites, but they knew all
  • 00:16:05.180 --> 00:16:09.220
  • the facts, but they did not respond with their life.
  • 00:16:09.230 --> 00:16:12.260
  • They didn't go in the door.
  • 00:16:12.270 --> 00:16:14.100
  • Leading us to John 10:9.
  • 00:16:14.110 --> 00:16:16.210
  • Jesus says, "I am the door.
  • 00:16:16.220 --> 00:16:20.160
  • Come on in.
  • 00:16:20.170 --> 00:16:21.260
  • Come by me, and you'll discover that all things work together
  • 00:16:21.270 --> 00:16:26.060
  • for good to those who love the Lord and those who are
  • 00:16:26.070 --> 00:16:28.210
  • the called according to His purpose."
  • 00:16:28.220 --> 00:16:33.220
  • God uses ordinary people.
  • 00:16:33.230 --> 00:16:35.280
  • We can flip back in Corinthians.
  • 00:16:35.290 --> 00:16:37.230
  • Many passages and see this again in Corinthians chapter number 1.
  • 00:16:37.240 --> 00:16:42.270
  • Tremendous verse that we have there.
  • 00:16:42.280 --> 00:16:46.180
  • It says, "But God has chosen the foolish things of the world
  • 00:16:46.190 --> 00:16:51.140
  • to put to shame the wise; and God has chosen the weak
  • 00:16:51.150 --> 00:16:54.140
  • things of the world to put to shame the things which are
  • 00:16:54.150 --> 00:16:57.250
  • mighty; and the base things of the world and the things
  • 00:16:57.260 --> 00:17:01.020
  • which are despised, God has chosen the things which are not,
  • 00:17:01.030 --> 00:17:05.080
  • to bring to nothing the things that are that no flesh should
  • 00:17:05.090 --> 00:17:08.240
  • glory in His presence."
  • 00:17:08.250 --> 00:17:10.170
  • God uses ordinary people and unlikely people to do
  • 00:17:10.180 --> 00:17:16.180
  • extraordinary things.
  • 00:17:17.000 --> 00:17:18.090
  • What happened here?
  • 00:17:18.100 --> 00:17:19.250
  • The next passage, I'll not read it to you.
  • 00:17:19.260 --> 00:17:23.130
  • She proposes a covenant with Israel through
  • 00:17:23.140 --> 00:17:28.010
  • these two spies.
  • 00:17:28.020 --> 00:17:29.110
  • What'd she say?
  • 00:17:29.120 --> 00:17:30.210
  • She says, "I know you're gonna come and destroy Jericho.
  • 00:17:30.220 --> 00:17:33.140
  • I get that."
  • 00:17:33.150 --> 00:17:34.270
  • But she said, "I have hidden you.
  • 00:17:34.280 --> 00:17:37.260
  • I've not turned you in."
  • 00:17:37.270 --> 00:17:39.280
  • And she arranged a way for them to get out of the land.
  • 00:17:39.290 --> 00:17:43.200
  • And she said, as a result of that, "I have laid my life
  • 00:17:43.210 --> 00:17:49.140
  • on the line, my blood on the line, for your
  • 00:17:49.150 --> 00:17:52.080
  • Salvation."
  • 00:17:52.090 --> 00:17:53.180
  • And she said, "When you come and take the land, I want you
  • 00:17:53.190 --> 00:17:56.110
  • to lay your blood on the line, that I will be saved and all
  • 00:17:56.120 --> 00:18:00.100
  • of those in my house--the best little chicken farm house
  • 00:18:00.110 --> 00:18:04.250
  • in Jericho.
  • 00:18:04.260 --> 00:18:06.050
  • Save me and all my family."
  • 00:18:06.060 --> 00:18:08.030
  • And that contract was rendered.
  • 00:18:08.040 --> 00:18:10.160
  • A covenant was made, and then they said,
  • 00:18:10.170 --> 00:18:15.040
  • "There has to be a token."
  • 00:18:15.050 --> 00:18:16.180
  • And I love this phrase there, token.
  • 00:18:16.190 --> 00:18:20.070
  • You find it back in our study in the chapter.
  • 00:18:20.080 --> 00:18:24.170
  • Read over there.
  • 00:18:24.180 --> 00:18:25.270
  • It says in verse 12, "Now, therefore, I beg you.
  • 00:18:25.280 --> 00:18:28.040
  • Swear to me by the Lord, since I have shown you kindness."
  • 00:18:28.050 --> 00:18:32.020
  • Anytime you see the word kindness in the Bible,
  • 00:18:32.030 --> 00:18:34.180
  • it's a blood-covenant word.
  • 00:18:34.190 --> 00:18:35.280
  • Kindness.
  • 00:18:35.290 --> 00:18:38.090
  • "I have shown kindness to you.
  • 00:18:38.100 --> 00:18:40.220
  • He is a God of Heaven and Earth.
  • 00:18:40.230 --> 00:18:42.210
  • You also will show kindness to my father's house and give me
  • 00:18:42.220 --> 00:18:46.210
  • a true token."
  • 00:18:46.220 --> 00:18:48.070
  • In other words, "Give me a sign, a token of that covenant
  • 00:18:48.080 --> 00:18:52.100
  • we have."
  • 00:18:52.110 --> 00:18:53.200
  • You know what a token was?
  • 00:18:53.210 --> 00:18:55.000
  • It was a scarlet rope that would hung out of the window, that
  • 00:18:55.010 --> 00:18:58.250
  • when those spies escape out the window.
  • 00:18:58.260 --> 00:19:03.010
  • Then she said, "That will be out the window of this house
  • 00:19:03.020 --> 00:19:06.240
  • of prostitution, where I'll have all my family there when you
  • 00:19:06.250 --> 00:19:10.270
  • come and take over the land."
  • 00:19:10.280 --> 00:19:12.200
  • That scarlet rope out the window will be the sign
  • 00:19:12.210 --> 00:19:17.050
  • that we will be saved.
  • 00:19:17.060 --> 00:19:23.040
  • Move on ahead to the 6th chapter,
  • 00:19:23.050 --> 00:19:24.280
  • let me walk you through it.
  • 00:19:24.290 --> 00:19:26.080
  • The Israelites were ready to go in the land.
  • 00:19:26.090 --> 00:19:30.130
  • They were 2 million of them.
  • 00:19:30.140 --> 00:19:33.010
  • And the first day, they went out.
  • 00:19:33.020 --> 00:19:34.290
  • Now follow me, this is amazing.
  • 00:19:35.000 --> 00:19:36.290
  • They went out, and they circle the whole city of Jericho, just
  • 00:19:37.000 --> 00:19:42.280
  • about seven or ten acres in size, and they went around it
  • 00:19:42.290 --> 00:19:46.110
  • and there was not a sound.
  • 00:19:46.120 --> 00:19:48.290
  • No trumpets, no conversation.
  • 00:19:49.000 --> 00:19:51.000
  • Soldiers carrying those trumpets.
  • 00:19:51.010 --> 00:19:56.110
  • Ark of the Covenant being carried.
  • 00:19:56.120 --> 00:19:58.080
  • Soldiers and they went around the first day, Shhhh!
  • 00:19:58.090 --> 00:20:01.140
  • Not a sound!
  • 00:20:01.150 --> 00:20:03.230
  • Can you imagine if you were in Jericho, all locked up?
  • 00:20:03.240 --> 00:20:06.240
  • There's 2 million people there right across the river.
  • 00:20:06.250 --> 00:20:08.220
  • Here's their army, walks around the first day.
  • 00:20:08.230 --> 00:20:10.160
  • Shh!
  • 00:20:10.170 --> 00:20:11.260
  • Not a sound.
  • 00:20:11.270 --> 00:20:13.060
  • The second day the same thing happened.
  • 00:20:13.070 --> 00:20:15.020
  • Here are the soldiers, here are the trumpets.
  • 00:20:15.030 --> 00:20:17.180
  • No noise.
  • 00:20:17.190 --> 00:20:18.280
  • Here's the Ark, the presence of God.
  • 00:20:18.290 --> 00:20:21.010
  • Here're the soldier.
  • 00:20:21.020 --> 00:20:22.110
  • The second day they marched around, no sound.
  • 00:20:22.120 --> 00:20:24.210
  • Same thing third day, fourth day, fifth day, sixth day.
  • 00:20:24.220 --> 00:20:28.080
  • Can you imagine, if you were in Jericho how you begin
  • 00:20:28.090 --> 00:20:31.010
  • to feel?
  • 00:20:31.020 --> 00:20:32.240
  • Man, what in the world happened here?
  • 00:20:32.250 --> 00:20:34.160
  • And then the seventh day, oh!
  • 00:20:34.170 --> 00:20:37.270
  • Joshua gives a signal.
  • 00:20:37.280 --> 00:20:40.130
  • The trumpets all blast out.
  • 00:20:40.140 --> 00:20:43.070
  • All the army there, circling Jericho.
  • 00:20:43.080 --> 00:20:46.070
  • And all the 2 million people on the other side of the river
  • 00:20:46.080 --> 00:20:50.220
  • seven miles away, they give out a shout.
  • 00:20:50.230 --> 00:20:55.130
  • A shout!
  • 00:20:55.140 --> 00:20:57.240
  • And all the walls come tumbling down.
  • 00:20:57.250 --> 00:21:01.100
  • They had external walls.
  • 00:21:01.110 --> 00:21:03.240
  • They had internal walls, they were about 30 feet high.
  • 00:21:03.250 --> 00:21:07.130
  • And on the external wall there was the house of the prostitute,
  • 00:21:07.140 --> 00:21:12.150
  • Rahab.
  • 00:21:12.160 --> 00:21:13.250
  • Now, they didn't know how God was gonna do this.
  • 00:21:13.260 --> 00:21:16.230
  • He had done it by earthquake.
  • 00:21:16.240 --> 00:21:18.280
  • After he parted the Red Sea, every other miracle,
  • 00:21:18.290 --> 00:21:22.060
  • no big deal, right?
  • 00:21:22.070 --> 00:21:23.160
  • When you're working with a supernatural God, well,
  • 00:21:23.170 --> 00:21:25.110
  • how did this happen?
  • 00:21:25.120 --> 00:21:26.220
  • God did it.
  • 00:21:26.230 --> 00:21:28.150
  • And the walls were flattened out!
  • 00:21:28.160 --> 00:21:30.120
  • All the walls!
  • 00:21:30.130 --> 00:21:31.260
  • The outer walls, inner walls were all flattened
  • 00:21:31.270 --> 00:21:34.160
  • out except that one little section of the outer wall.
  • 00:21:34.170 --> 00:21:40.170
  • "What is that?
  • 00:21:41.010 --> 00:21:42.130
  • There's a little house there.
  • 00:21:42.140 --> 00:21:44.050
  • Oh, that.
  • 00:21:44.060 --> 00:21:45.150
  • That's the house of the...
  • 00:21:45.160 --> 00:21:47.030
  • of the prostitute, Rahab, it's still standing."
  • 00:21:47.040 --> 00:21:51.280
  • The Bible says, in the 6th chapter, that Joshua went
  • 00:21:51.290 --> 00:21:55.080
  • and when they conquered the city and they obliterated everybody,
  • 00:21:55.090 --> 00:21:59.150
  • but they spared Rahab and all of her house.
  • 00:21:59.160 --> 00:22:02.290
  • And they knew that because they saw in a window there, there was
  • 00:22:03.000 --> 00:22:07.260
  • a scarlet rope.
  • 00:22:07.270 --> 00:22:10.260
  • A little village in Brazil, way back in the heartland of that
  • 00:22:10.270 --> 00:22:13.280
  • big country.
  • 00:22:13.290 --> 00:22:16.210
  • Common peasant family, many children, one child there was
  • 00:22:16.220 --> 00:22:22.180
  • named Christina.
  • 00:22:22.190 --> 00:22:23.280
  • Beautiful, young, dynamic, bouncy Christian girl.
  • 00:22:23.290 --> 00:22:28.010
  • But she always talked about Rio.
  • 00:22:28.020 --> 00:22:31.080
  • "I want to go to Rio!
  • 00:22:31.090 --> 00:22:32.250
  • I wanna live my life in Rio."
  • 00:22:32.260 --> 00:22:34.200
  • And her mother would try to discourage her, but one
  • 00:22:34.210 --> 00:22:37.030
  • morning, her mother, Maria, got up and looked at in the room
  • 00:22:37.040 --> 00:22:41.230
  • where the children would sleep, and there, the oldest teenage
  • 00:22:41.240 --> 00:22:44.290
  • girl, her pallet was empty.
  • 00:22:45.000 --> 00:22:47.120
  • And that mother knew that she had somehow gone to Rio.
  • 00:22:47.130 --> 00:22:51.260
  • And the mother went out, took all the money she had.
  • 00:22:51.270 --> 00:22:55.010
  • Went down to a little drugstore there in the village that they
  • 00:22:55.020 --> 00:22:58.220
  • had one of those machines where you can take your picture,
  • 00:22:58.230 --> 00:23:01.230
  • and she used all the money she had, and took all the pictures
  • 00:23:01.240 --> 00:23:05.030
  • of herself that she could afford, had a stack of black
  • 00:23:05.040 --> 00:23:08.080
  • and white pictures.
  • 00:23:08.090 --> 00:23:10.000
  • And that mother, Maria, got on the bus and took that long
  • 00:23:10.010 --> 00:23:13.280
  • ride to Rio hoping somehow, some way, she'd find her daughter who
  • 00:23:13.290 --> 00:23:18.190
  • had run away to the big city.
  • 00:23:18.200 --> 00:23:20.190
  • She spent weeks there and everywhere she went, she
  • 00:23:20.200 --> 00:23:23.060
  • took pictures of herself.
  • 00:23:23.070 --> 00:23:24.270
  • She'd put them on bulletin boards, in little flop houses.
  • 00:23:24.280 --> 00:23:28.010
  • She put them there in little marketplaces on boards
  • 00:23:28.020 --> 00:23:31.230
  • of announcement, she put it there in houses of prostitution.
  • 00:23:31.240 --> 00:23:35.150
  • She put the picture of herself all over the area hoping
  • 00:23:35.160 --> 00:23:38.280
  • somehow, some way, her daughter, Christina would see her picture.
  • 00:23:38.290 --> 00:23:42.260
  • And finally, she ran out of money, she ran
  • 00:23:42.270 --> 00:23:45.190
  • out of pictures and she got on a bus, and went all the way
  • 00:23:45.200 --> 00:23:48.120
  • back to her little village in the heart of Brazil, crying
  • 00:23:48.130 --> 00:23:51.230
  • all the way, knowing she had lost a daughter,
  • 00:23:51.240 --> 00:23:55.220
  • beautiful daughter!
  • 00:23:55.230 --> 00:23:57.260
  • Months went by.
  • 00:23:57.270 --> 00:24:00.030
  • One day Christina was coming out of a flop house.
  • 00:24:00.040 --> 00:24:05.230
  • No longer did her brown eyes bounce, no longer was she
  • 00:24:05.240 --> 00:24:09.100
  • bubbling, no longer was she alive with life.
  • 00:24:09.110 --> 00:24:13.150
  • She was older than her years, worn, beaten, tired,
  • 00:24:13.160 --> 00:24:19.050
  • discouraged, thinking she had missed life altogether, thinking
  • 00:24:19.060 --> 00:24:24.140
  • there was no hope, and she wanted to go back, she said,
  • 00:24:24.150 --> 00:24:28.060
  • that little village to her pallet, but she--
  • 00:24:28.070 --> 00:24:31.050
  • because of her pride, she said, "It's too late."
  • 00:24:31.060 --> 00:24:34.100
  • But she walked down these steps this day and looked on a little
  • 00:24:34.110 --> 00:24:37.080
  • bulletin board, and she saw there a picture.
  • 00:24:37.090 --> 00:24:41.130
  • A picture of her mother.
  • 00:24:41.140 --> 00:24:44.190
  • And she went over and took that picture down, and turned it
  • 00:24:44.200 --> 00:24:49.250
  • over on the back, and it said, "Whatever you've done,
  • 00:24:49.260 --> 00:24:56.190
  • whatever you've become, it doesn't matter.
  • 00:24:56.200 --> 00:25:02.210
  • Come home."
  • 00:25:02.220 --> 00:25:05.100
  • She did.
  • 00:25:10.250 --> 00:25:12.250
  • Ed Young: What's the one thing you could do today that would
  • 00:25:14.130 --> 00:25:17.100
  • radically change your life?

  • I'd suggest a small slice of your time spent
  • 00:25:19.240 --> 00:25:24.220
  • with the Almighty.

  • You may have struggled with how to fit a daily quiet time
  • 00:25:26.160 --> 00:25:29.060
  • in your schedule.

  • Listen, we put together thirty short audio devotionals that
  • 00:25:30.170 --> 00:25:34.260
  • will help you get started in your busy life.

  • They include a verse of scripture, a closing word
  • 00:25:38.060 --> 00:25:41.110
  • of challenge or application.

  • 00:26:01.000 --> 00:26:04.030
  • devotional series, read by Dr. Young,
  • 00:26:04.040 --> 00:26:06.250
  • call the number on your screen, or go online
  • 00:26:06.260 --> 00:26:09.060
  • at WinningWalk.org.
  • 00:26:09.070 --> 00:26:15.070
  • Ed Young: Today we looked at the story of a woman who is
  • 00:26:15.140 --> 00:26:18.140
  • included in the genealogy of Jesus.
  • 00:26:18.150 --> 00:26:21.160
  • The Story of Rahab is a fascinating one.
  • 00:26:21.170 --> 00:26:25.050
  • She was willing to risk everything and to trust God
  • 00:26:25.060 --> 00:26:28.200
  • to preserve her family.
  • 00:26:28.210 --> 00:26:30.220
  • This ordinary, unlikely individual reminds us
  • 00:26:30.230 --> 00:26:34.230
  • of the extraordinary way in which God works
  • 00:26:34.240 --> 00:26:38.070
  • in every life.
  • 00:26:38.080 --> 00:26:40.100
  • What an overwhelming privilege we have, you and I.
  • 00:26:40.110 --> 00:26:44.260
  • Ordinary, unlikely people like you and like me, to be
  • 00:26:44.270 --> 00:26:49.140
  • members of the family of God.
  • 00:26:49.150 --> 00:26:52.060
  • God wants to do a special work in your life,
  • 00:26:52.070 --> 00:26:55.220
  • if you'll only let him.
  • 00:26:55.230 --> 00:26:58.030
  • Let me help you take that next step.
  • 00:26:58.040 --> 00:27:01.050

  • same place, same station on "The Winning Walk."
  • 00:27:08.020 --> 00:27:12.250
